Making us stop and think before we jump, Ability to understand us, Reality of our importance, You — just you, Implicit faith in the students, Somehow, making us believe in ourselves, Patience which often we do not deserve, Interest you have taken in us, Love which you have shown for us, Many years of loyalty, And giving your time generously, and Never letting us down when we needed you. For these reasons and many more, we, the students of Pikeville College, dedicate the ' 54 HIGHLANDER to you, MISS MARY I. Mitchell Cincinnati, Ohio W. W. Walker Bluefield, W. Va. My greetings to the graduating class and sincere best wishes for a successful and happy life. I would make two observations. One is that as the years pass, you will come to treasure your annual more and more, because as you look back over it, you will keep memories fresh. The other observation is this. Ever bear in mind that the only measure of any college is the student who attends that college. P r e s it e n t President D e a n Each of you, under God, has a particular niche to fill in the world. No one else can do the work that God has planned for you as well as you can. It will be the glory of your life to find this niche, and to fulfill God ' s tasks for you. This discovery of God ' s p lan for your life is the measure of true success, for it is founded on eternal values. So, in the words of King Saul to David as the shepherd boy set out to slay the giant Goliath, Go, and the Lord be with thee. RALPH T. KILGORE Business Manager ETHEL L. When the Highlander went to press it looked as if history might repeat itself. The ' 52- ' 53 season, took the runner-up position in the conference in February, also were runners-up in the state conference tournament and the same in the Southeastern Junior Conference tournament. This year the Bears are tied for first place in the Kentucky Conference which will be decided after the state tournament. The Bears have scored over 100 points in six games, over 90 in five, over 80 in seven and less than 60 twice. Their opponents have never scored more than 88 points in a game. These scores have given the Bears an 82.37 points per game average, while holding their opponents to a 64.06 points per game average.
