Like a man who carries a spare tire on his car, the Sophomores selected Frances Page as vice-president. Gentlemen prefer blonds and so does the class of ' 49. Consequently Bobby Johnson was elected secretary. There was no doubt in anyone ' s mind as to her capability. In the laborous task of treasurer was placed Leonard Crum, a likeable individual who will be able to fulfill his duties without losing a single friend. Rezina E. Senter is sponsor. It believes that this can be done only when the foundations are lain in Christian character. Therefore, its purpose is the development of character founded on the eternal truths of God. To that end the study of 1 he English Bible is required of all its students. One week during the year is given over to worship services at chapel and in the evening, for the students. This Spiritual Emphasis week is one of the most enjoyable weeks of the year. Dr. Spencer and Francis Tacket discuss life ' s problems. 45 M Music Building Mr. Frank, Hershel Linnetaedt, accom panlst; Mrs. Enochs, Ossy Renardy, violin ist; Mr. Albert. THE COLLEGE GLEE CLUB The aesthetic side of school life Is rep- resented by these who devote part of their time to worl In music. Since Its be- ginning last fall, the PIkevIlle College Glee Club has steadily grown In the affections of the college students and the people of the area surrounding Pikeville. WLSI, Plke- ville ' s radio station, has provided the means whereby the Glee Club has reached a much wider audience than concerts alone could do. The Glee Club ' s repertoire has included secular and religious music of the choral masters. Some of the music has been sung a capella which goes to prove the amount of time and work given both by the mem- bers of the Glee Club and Mr. Albert, the director. The Glee Club ' s Christmas and Easter concerts will long be remembered, and the class of 1949 will be particularly grate- ful for the Commencement Music. 47 THE RECORD When ' s The Record Coming Out? Within these pages we have tried to record your life on Pikeville College campus. A life we hope you can reflect upon as being sweet, free and harmonious. In publishing the hHIGhi- LANDER, one of the main ideas is to bring back to you, in later years, a realistic account of your days at Pikeville College. Our staff has sought to bring you this without partiality or prejudice and to restate every happening that will interest you. It has been fun working for those who gave willingly of their time and ability that this book might become a reality, though there have been a few sleepless nights and headaches. To every- one who helped in any way, we wish to express our sincere appreciation. Clarence (Boney Mills, freshman from Inez, was high scorer for the Bears this past season and among the high scorers in the state. His wicked one handed shot is going to make him a sensation for the Bears next year. Jack Frost Wells, sophomore from Auxier, has played his last game for the Bears. We shall always remember Jack for his fighting spirit and determination to win. We are glad to see him graduate, but sorry to see him go. Charles Porter, freshman from Warfield, has been an asset to the team. He plays a fast shifty game. He is nice to have around when the score is not up to par. Andy Renick, freshman from Bowiing Green, has proved his ability on the basketball floor by being chosen All Tournament man in the J.C.C. Bob Estepp, sophomore from Garret, has donned his last uniform for P.C. Bob has turned into one of the best ball handlers on the team. Glad to see Bob gradu- ate, but sorry to see him go. Vernon Syck, freshman, needs very little introduction since we saw him perform in our own academy. Syck is one of the most aggressive ball handlers we have seen for some time. We are looking forward for a greater Syck next year. Rudy Rutherford, carbon copy of Syck, provides the fans with a lot of excitement with his long shots. He is fast and furious. Tonny Elkwick, Pikeville High School star, is dependable and seems to be in the right place at the right time, we are expecting a lot out of him next year. Hubbard Francis, sophomore from Prestonsburg, will graduate this year. Huck is known lor his cool headed- ness. His cooperation and team spirit was an asset to the Bears during his stay at the college. We will miss your talking It up, Huck. Al Snyder, freshman, has all the possibilities of making a good ball player. He must be commended for his fine team spirit and we are expecting some nice work next year. Buddy Johnson, Pike High, came to us too late to furnish much assistance to the Bear:. Judging from past years he is going to be among the first string next year. Welcome to the Bears, Buddy. Basal Hall, from Dorton, is bound for basketball fame. He has been a spark plug to the Bears from the bench. Hall, has not been a first string man but has been good to have around. James Booth, from Warfield, never seems to be in a hurry but did some fancy ball playing. He is going to be an asset to the team. This epistle could not be ended without mentioning the Bears ' s cob, The bashful man who has taken so much care of the them is Ray Sumpter. We cannot pay any higher tribute to him than saying he is dependable and indespensable. This year the Pikeville College basketball team under the leadership of Coach Bill Hounchin has attained one of the best records that the Bears have compiled In a number of years. Much credit should go to Couch Hounchin and the boys who fought so ardently to have a winning team. 73 THE CUBS Left to right: T. L. Bowling, Don Trivette, James Carter, Jim Bob Harp, Maurice Isabell, Don Barfley, Neale Hal!, Jim Critt Sfratton, Johnnie Burke, Kenneth Burke, Frankie Burke. Coach Hounchin ' s Cubs showed a fine spirit throughout the season even though they lost many of their games. Much Improvement was made during the latter part of the season. Therefore, we are anticipating a bigger and better ball team next year for the Academy. James Carter, forward, is known as the hot and cold player. James made the all-confer- ence team. Johnny Burke, guard, better known as the floor shiner because he is always on the floor In pursuit of the ball. Don Trivette, forward, center, could draw fouls as well as doing excellent defensive play- ing. T. L. Boehling, forward, better known as Shorty, made all the district, scoring 17 points against Phelps. What he lacked in rebounding he made up in scoring. Don Bartley, forward, is a steady ball player who had a good eye for set shots. Don Sullivan, guard, Is a rough and ready player. Dudley Elswick, guard, forward, kept the crowd laughing with his freak shots that nearly always went In. James hiatmaker, guard, inexperienced but a very good rebounder. Charles Beverly, guard, a good rebounder who is counted on for a lot of service next year. Jim Bob Harp, forward, saw action In several games. Jim was handicapped by both accident and Illness this season. Jim Sfratton, forward, didn ' t play much this season but his possibilities look good for the next three years. We cannot fail to mention the two hard working men, Ronnie and Vernon Johnson, who nursed the Cubs during this season. But for them the Cubs might have appeared sans balls, sans suits, sans all. Other prospective ball players for the Cubs are: Maurice Isabell, Franklin Keesee, Russel HIbbs, Kenneth Burke, James Coleman. 74 TRAINING SCHOOL ATHLETICS Left to right: Donnie Layne, Thomas Blevins, Paul Allen Brewer, Morris Justice, Samuel Carter, Gary Dean Layne, Bennie Justice. YELL LEADERS Kathryn Finch, Phyllis Maynard, Bonnie Mater, Barbara Huffman, Donna May. Left to right: Morris Justice, Paul Brewer. Samuel Carter, Gary Layne. ENJOYING THE SWINGS Henry Forsythe, Mary Reynolds, Helen Rankin, Ralph Campbell, Billy Clark, Franklin Rankin, Marco Blackburn, Bettie Feltner, Peter Wul- kan, Barbara Hatmaker, Wanda Davis and Patricia May.
