Page twenty-one MAP WORK CALENDAR SEPTEMBER 8 Louise C, Mrs. Brown, are you go- ing to stay in here with it? 9 All-school party on the campus. 10 Bernice H., I still want that letter — I asked for meat and she gave me peas. 11 Will the Freshmen ever learn to stay quiet during quiet hour at nights. Lot of courting on the campus. 12 Edith B. coming to college to gain weight. 13 Freshmen will have to get used to quiet hour on Sunday. Oma E. is still homesick. 14 Violet T.j This food, I ' ll never get used to it. 15 Freshmen dread Physical Ed. Es- tella still wants to go home. 16 B. Conley and Johnson going steady ■ — with Herbert S. on the side. 17 Couples getting thick on the cam- pus. The weather is a little chilly. 18 Say! Estella, whose ring are you wearing — Oh, yes, whose ring is Haster wearing ? 19 Wonder why Earleen steps out. Could R. T. Johnson be the answer? 21 Earleen is happy today because she is going home. Estella has the blues. 22 Geraldene F. sure looks happy to- day going around with a Captain from the army. Say, who is h e, anyway ? 23 Psychology getting the Freshmen down — some of the Sophomores can ' t take it either. 24 Fire drills for Derriana girls. Sure got them excited — air raid also. Mrs. Brown had wrong key to the lock. 25 The Hutcheson boys seem to be popular this year with the Derriana girls. What you say, Virginia and Bobbie Jean? 26 Georgia Lee and Ruby on the war path — Mrs. Brown told them to clean their own room. 27 H. Salisbury sure took a laughing spell while talking with Estella and Geraldene F. 28 Girls look happy. Show night, could that be the reason why ? OCTOBER 1 Conley and B. Johnson not on speaking terms. Virginia and Betty with Fletcher. 8 Founder ' s Day — Freshmen couldn ' t understood why they couldn ' t be first in line at cafe. 9 The chemistry class seems to be worried, What ' s wrong, Mr. Day? 12 Dickey plays ukulele in Chapel with a big hit. Page thirty ACTIVITIES Page thirty-one SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEK The annual Spiritual Emphasis Week was held March 21 through 26, with sermons in Wickham Chapel twice daily by the Rev. Ernest N. Hart, pastor of the Central Presbyterian Church of Owensboro, Kentucky. Mr. Hart is the first former student of Pikeville College ever to return as Spiritual Emphasis Week speaker. An advanced student and counselor of boys at Pikeville College in 1916-17, Mr. Hart came to Kentucky from Canada where he had been a missionary to the Indians. He is a native of England. Mr. Hart ' s sermons made a very deep impression, and the response was wonderful — sixty-eight students made a first profession of faith and sev- enty-one others rededicated themselves to the service of the Master. Each of the sermons was a definite and carefully prepared step in a series pre- senting the need for seeing God face to face and the results of such a vi- sion — a sense of sin, confession, cleansing, and service. Mr. Hart did not present the Christian life as an easy-going thing, but challenged young people to make sacrifices and to give their best. The response showed that he was not mistaken in making such an appeal to youth. Perhaps the outstanding sermon of the series was on Thursday night, the last of the night sermons, when he dramatized the story of Barabbas, and made a most searching appeal for accepting the Cross of Christ. The last service of the series was on Friday morning at the regular chapel time, when he bluntly put the question What will YOU do with Jesus? That service is described in the words of President Page: I never in my life had such wonderful experiences as on that morning. Young men and women in the college whom we had been praying for came forward and then went to work with their classmates, and as a result we had one of the most glorious occasions ever known in Pikeville College. Some teach classes, some lead singing, others offer their services by reading poems or the Scripture — or even by just carrying the organ and song books to the meeting houses. They give their services freely, feeling it a privilege to work for the Lord Jesus in furthering His Kingdom. The work gives the young people training in Christian work and strengthens their own Christian lives. Rare fellowship is enjoyed by this group among themselves and the members of the many rural Sunday Schools. Page thirty-three Y. W. C. A. This year the Y. W. C. A. has been the largest it has ever been in the history of Pikeville College. The meetings have been very interesting and helpful to the girls. The members were divided into four groups and each group was responsible for the different meetings. Best wishes go to Miss Elizabeth North who has been very dear to the girls. OFFICERS Edith 0. M. DICK TYLER Coach Tyler is a protege of Ed Diddle of Western State Teachers College, where he played for four years. This is the first year at Pikeville College. For the preced- ing eight years he was Coach and Athletic Director at St. Augustine High School at Lebanon, Ky., where he piled up a grid and cage record excelled by few. One of the outstanding charac- teristics of Coach Tyler ' s method is that he seeks to make of his athletes, leaders, gentlemen, and good sportsmen. Starting under the handicap of the war crisis, los- ing two regulars to the armed service, Tyler developed a quintet that held up all requirements that former teams had set. His record for this year has more than pleased the followers of the Bears and we know they wish him all the luck with his future teams. CUB CHEER LEADERS Page forty -eight ' DURWARD W. MAYNARD, Manager Every ball club must have a manager, and not infrequently the success of the team depends upon the efficiency, the dependability, and the co- operation of the manager. Such has been Durward ' s record in the season that he has served the Bears as manager and the Cubs as scorer. His ability and efficiency also won for him the distinction of acting as official scorer in the District High School Tournament at Pikeville, the Regional High School Tournament at Prestonsburg, and the State High School Tournament at Lexington. BEAR CHEER LEADERS Page forty-nine Captain Harmon Smith Venters Salisbury Kirk BASKETBALL BEARS SEASON IS SUCCESS Playing- a much harder schedule than was anticipated, Coach Tyler ' s Bear netters won ten out of sixteen games they participated in during the 1942-43 season. Meeting members of three athletic organizations from Virginia, Tenn- essee, and Kentucky, the Big Black displayed brilliant form in all their games. Teams from the Virginia Junior College Conference, East Tennessee Conference, Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and Kentucky Junior College Conference were played by the Bears during the year. The play of Alex Roxy Harmon, forward on the Big Black five and named all Kentucky Junior College and all Southeastern forward last year was the leading scorer this year with 328 points or an average of 20.5 per game. Joe Kirk was second high scorer with 206 points and Hurb Salis- bury had 169 points. Harmon and Salisbury have played two years of excellent basketball for the Bears. When next season rolls around Coach Tyler will have a mighty tough time replacing these veterans. Kirk is a newcomer at Pikeville, but was named all Kentucky forward two years with Harmon when they helped Inez High School win the State Championship in 1941. In the sixteen games played by the Bears during the season they scored 933 points to 780 for their opponents. Their play was more of a sensational type of preordained setup plays than on close-in and rebound shots. This was done to offset the lack of height experienced by the Big Black. They drew capacity audience for every game. Page fifty N % pPi Young King Maynard Mellon Williamson 1942-43 BEARS NAMED COLLEGE CHAMPS By virtue of winning four out of five conference games and having one game forfeited the Pikeville College Bears are to be named winners of the Kentucky Junior College Conference. The winners heretofore have been chosen by tournament play, but because of the war crisis it was impossible to do so this year. The champion team, boasting one of the most powerful quintets ever assembled at Pikeville College, was denied its due recognition because only three of the usual eight Junior College teams participated in basketball this season: Pikeville College, Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson. The Bears were 137 percentage points ahead of their nearest opponent, rated according to the Dickinson system. Campbellsville was rated sec- ond best by the same mathematical method. The Bears scored 290 points as against 195 by their opponents. This is the first time that Pikeville has ever broken the jinx which has shadowed them since the Junior College loop was formed. Their teams always made a good showing and usually went into the semi-finals and finals but always came out without the winner ' s wreath. The main objective of the three teams that played each other this year was to do their utmost to hold the conference together.
