Bessie Alice Owens, Instructor LES PORTES FLAMBEAUX To become better acquainted with the French people, their leaders, their customs, and their philosophy of life is the purpose of Les Fortes Flambeaux. Programs centering around the lives of great Frenchmen and their influence on civili- zation afford glimpses of personages who have left a heritage of which la belle France may be justly proud. Then the programs, featuring current events and topics of the day, help to clarify sensational stories of such in- ternational problems as l ' affaire Stavisky followed by the loss of confidence in the country and the riots of Paris. The forma- tion of new cabinets, the death and funeral of King Albert, France ' s attitude toward Hit- ler and disarmament, Mussolini et Fascisme, Les Etats-Unis and payment of the war debt have been subjects for timely discussions. The French viewpoint, as expressed in Lr Petit Journal and in Courrier des Etats-Unis, is compared with the American one found in The New York Times, Tin- Courier-Journal and in other American papers. 4 THE HIGHLANDER LES PORTES FLAMBEAUX (High School) Top row: Margaret Bevins, Jemima Smith, Mlle. This cor- respondence has flourished immensely and the letters which the realia students are con- stantly receiving serve as a T. S. F. for them and a a radio for the club members. If more students were engaged in such friendship-forming correspondences, as advo- cated by former President Wilson ; it would be a potent factor for world peace in the fu- ture. One doesn ' t have difficulties that must be settled on the battlefield with people whom one understands. Occasionally, such momentous questions as war and peace are left to the presidents of the two nations and we give the student bodv a good program as we did in Le Noel en France, or we give ourselves a jolly good partv as we did at the home of James Amick. 41 THE HIGHLANDER Y.
