The golfers showed balance throughout, with over 10 team members averaging under 43 on their home course. The brightest event of the fall campaign occurred when the varsity set a new course record with a 143 at Old Pines. The Junior Varsity had an excellent year as well with an undefeated season. Winter Academics 31 A Typical Day at DHS Boys Basketball This year’s Panther Varsity Basketball Team was not known for its accomplishments that show up as far as wins and losses but they will be remembered for the things that don’t show up on a box score. Hampered by a lack of size and experience plus the usual tough schedule. Our record was not as good as we had hoped for. But with all of the players back from the Sectional Team and four consistent starters back plus the number 1, 3, and 5 top returning scorers in the conference back, things will look very good for a much improved year next year. The Panther girls finished their season with an overall record of 7 wins and 12 losses; while their league record was 2-6, finishing ahead of Wauseon and Montpelier. The Panthers will be looking forward to next season and will be trying to improve this year’s 7-12 mark. With the completion of the season, a few athletes have received some notable recognition. First of all, Kim Edwards was selected by the coaches in the league to be on the second team all-league. Kim was the third leading scorer in the league. Jolyn Kistner also received honorable mention all-league. Awards given at the Winter Sports Banquet were as follows: Best Offensive Player was Kim Edwards. Best Defensive Player was Jolyn Kistner. Most Improved Player went to the well-deserving freshman, Dena Smith. The Most Valuable Player for the 1983-84 season went to two hard-working athletes: sophomore, Jolyn Kistner and junior, Kim Edwards. 34 Girls Basketball Top left: Jump high, Jo! They finished the season with a 14-3 overall record and a 5-3 league record, ending up 3rd place in the league. This was the only year that Coach English had five wrestlers with more than 20 wins. They were Rick Stiriz at 98 lbs., 20-5; John Fahrer at 119 lbs., 20-4-1; Dave Kistner at 132 lbs., 24-5; Jeff Wolford at 145 lbs., 24-5; and Keith Schaechterle at 175 lbs., 25-4. In the league tournament, Stiriz and Howard were 4th place winners; Fahrer, Wolford, and Schaechterle were 2nd place; and Kistner was this year’s only league champion. In the District tournament, Fahrer took 4th, which was alternate, Stiriz took 3rd, Kistner and Wolford both took 2nd, and Schaechterle was Delta’s only District champion. In the Regional tournament, Wolford and Kistner took 6th, and Schaechterle was the Regional champion at 175. The year ended sweet yet sad when Coach Robert English announced his resignation as wrestling coach to the team and their families. When awards were handed out at the end of the year, Fahrer and Wolford were awarded the Coaches Award, Kistner received Most Improved Wrestler and Schaechterle received Most Valuable Wrestler. This year the assembly was broken into two parts. During the morning students were treated to the recent movie “War Games.” After lunch students returned to the gym for Christmas caroling and skits. Many groups and classes participated in the holiday festivities. Santa Claus, Jody Hagaman, ended the assembly by giving gifts to selected students and teachers. They finished third in both the district and regional meets, and finished fourth at the state meet. The 400 and 800 meter relay teams of Juleen Babcock, Linda Callahan, Dawn Hintz, and Kim Brown finished 3rd and 2nd at the state meet. The 1600 relay team of Babcock, Callahan, Brown, and Mary Sue Smith finished 2nd. Kerry Bostleman finished 7th in the state in the long jump. The three seniors, Linda Callahan, Juleen Babcock, and Kim Brown have all been members of winning relay teams since their freshman year. During their freshman year they placed 5th in the 400 and 6th in the 1600 at the state meet. In their sophomore year they were state champions in the 400, 800, and 1600; in their junior year they placed 5th in the 400 and 1st in the 800 on the state level. As is evident, these fine young athletes will be sorely missed. Girls' Track 51 Baseball The 1984 Baseball team had a league record of 2-5, a 3-12 record overall. The team was very young, six sophomores, two juniors, and one senior. But the future team looks good with 12 returning lettermen for next year. Spence Miller was the captain, and was chosen first team, outfield. He played in the NWOAL game. Pat Nawrocki, Steve Buehrer, and John Callahan, received Honorable Mention. Highest batting average was John Callahan with 375. Most improved was Pat Nawrocki and Steve Buehrer received the coaching award. Left: Is this Delta’s baseball team? Below: Captain, Spence Miller. Center: The teams shake hands. Above: Neil Doherty. Left: Games all over, but the fun isn’t. Baseball 53 Girls’ Softball The 1983-84 Girls Softball Team got off to a slow start ending the season with a 3-12 record. The Panthers fielded an extremely young team, having only one senior. The majority of the team consisted of freshmen, and sophomores. This youth should bring about fine seasons in the upcoming years. With enthusiastic players and a lot of people gaining experience, there was much improvement from the beginning of the season to the end. Hopes are high for next year. The lone senior on the team also proved to be the Most Valuable Player. She led the team in hits and extra-base hits pounding two doubles, one triple, and one home run. She was second in runs scored, RBI’s and struck out only twice out of forty-five times at bat. Losing just one senior doesn’t seem so great; but this loss of senior captain, Kim Tuckerman, will be deeply felt by the team. With the 1984 season ending, we are looking forward to next year. The Panther girls worked extremely hard and next year are looking to improve on their 83-84 record. Upper right: Shellie McCullough awaits the pitch. Above: Kim Edwards pitches her fast ball. The story centered around a Prince looking for a real Princess to marry. He had many difficulties finding a real Princess, but finally a. Princess appeared. The old Queen however, doubted that the Princess was real and put her to a difficult test. She had to sleep on twenty mattresses with a pea under them. If she was sensitive enough to feel the pea, she was a suitable Princess to marry the Prince. With help from some of the court she passes the test, making the Prince very happy.
