DEBATE AND DECLAMATION DEBATE The Pierre debaters, arguing the question, Resolved, that all electric utilities be governmentally owned and operated, enjoyed a successful season. A squad of twenty-Eve, including eight Frosh, was maintained throughout the season. Phyllis Dunn, Margaret Dyar, Martha Dunagan, Alice Henson, Francis Hines, jean Riggs and Ruby Weidlich qualified for letters. The debaters participated in several interscholastic contests during the year. Sixteen schools entered the Second Annual Central South Dakota Speech Tour- nament, sponsored by Pierre High. Prof. Cochran of Carleton College acted as special critic judge. ln debate, Pierre tied for second place with Rapid City and Geddes. Margaret Dyar placed third in extempore speaking. Highmore held an invitational debate contest in February with fourteen schools represented. Pierre tied with Highmore for first place in the debate division. Pierre won the District Debate Tournament. Margaret Dyar placed second in extempore speaking. This debate victory entitled our teams to enter the State Tournament, held at State College, Brookings, March 25th, 26th, and 27th. DECLAMATION Twentysfive students reported early in September for work in declamation, an unusual number reporting in the new poetry division. Agnes Doyle, Doris Darner, Alice Henson, Lorraine Loucks, Muriel Sorenson in the dramatic division, Brooky Calhoun, Martha Dunagan, Marcia Besselievre, Eula Harding, in the poetry division, Phyllis Dunn and Dorothy Kirkpatrick, in oratory competed in the local contest held November 6. Phyllis Dunn, Muriel Sorenson, and Marcia Besselievre represented Pierre High at the district contest held at Harrold, Phyllis receiving superior rating and Marcia a rating of excellent. At the regional contest at Aberdeen, Phyllis won excellent rating. Next year. the humorous division will be reinstated, which should give more students an opportunity to take advantage of the wide variety of work offered in four divisions.
