Many people have wondered where the name of our yearbook, The Delian , originated. The Delian originated from the Delian League, A Hellenic league, formed in c477 B.C., who kept their treasury on the island of Delos. The story of the Delian League, was the story of the fatal unwillingness of the small Greek states to coalesce into a nation, and of the inability of Athens to enforce unity. lt was this failure to join together, that made suitable the conquest of Rome. The island of Delos, the smallest island of the Cyclades of Greece, was also said to have been the birthplace of the Greek sun god, Apollo. Also, ac- cording to the island legends, Asteria, daughter of Titans, trying to escape the embraces of Zeus, leaped into the sea and was transformed into a beautiful quail. One of Delos' cities was named Asteria in her honor, but was later changed to Delos.
