Dedication The 1985 edition of the Yonahian is gratefully dedicated to Dr. Caridad Palomares Lopez, who, with her husband, Dr. Ruperto J. Lopez, has been a cornerstone of Piedmont College for the past two decades. To the hundreds of students who have studied under them, the Lopezes have been more than teachers. They have been friends and confidantes — mentors in every sense of the word. In 1962, the Lopezes left their native country of Cuba as political emigres from the tyranny of Fidel Castro ' s regime. In Cuba both had held for more than twenty years responsible positions in the educational system of Cuba. Coming to the United States with only their personal possessions, the Lopezes have won for themselves a new life in the United States and have become highly respected United States citizens and members of the academic community. In 1983, Dr. Ruperto Lopez retired from his position as Chairman of the Division of Natural Sciences and Professor of Biology, having taught in the Piedmont College Department of Biology since 1964. In 1966, Dr. Caridad Lopez, after three years as teacher of Spanish in the schools of Habersham County, joined her husband on the faculty of Piedmont College as Professor of Spanish and Chirman, Department of Foreign Languages. Dr. Caridad ' s contributions to the life of Piedmont College have gone far beyond the academic classes. The annual International Dinner, attended by hundreds of persons in the community; the Spanish Honor Society; the Spanish Folklore Group with its annual performances of international songs and dances; her sponsorship of international students at the College — all are witness to the many long hours and dedication of this remarkable and much loved teacher. We salute the Lopezes. We wish them long life and happiness. We can only say that we shall miss them and that we — each and all — are better persons for having known them.
