We are grateful to both the students and the faculty whose co-operation and faith have made this yearbook possible. It is with pride in you and in Piedmont that we present the 1960 Yonahian. . With sincere pleasure and personal affection the students of Piedmont dedicate the 1960 Yonahian to Dr. Nikolai Lemjakov, a man in whose work we have seen commitment to Truth and love for Beauty. As a professor he has shown us the reward of happiness to be found in work that requires service and giving; as a friend he has personified the man of humor and contagious good will. He has dedicated his life to intellectual discipline, but has maintained that rare balance which finds equal value in love for his fellows and devotion to aesthetic pursuits. We recognize his essential individuality, the following of his own high standards, and his ability to become a valuable member of the college, contributing of his knowledge and imagi- nation. In his concern for both student and college, he has deserved far more appreciation than we can hope to express, but we recognize in part and remark in love of those qualities we most admire. KING New Canaan, Connecticut COLONEL KENDALL WEISIGER Atlanta, Georgia THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Never before has our beloved Piedmont College faced a day of greater oppor- tunity. Never have we been more adequately prepared to move forward in con- fidence and strength to achieve even a larger measure of our goals of academic excellence. Under the wisdom and talented leadership of Dean O ' Neal Cave this year we have climbed several rungs higher on the collegiate ladder which leads to full regional accreditation. Trustees, administrative officers, faculty, students, and alumni, have all worked together many years for this long range objective which now appears to be within the reach of the immediate future. In the fall of 1958 we dedicated King Science Hall, a dream for decades, now one of the most modern science laboratories in our state. Next fall we shall com- plete and dedicate Wallace Hall, a modern dormitory for ninety-six men and two faculty apartments. This too has been on our Development Program for many years, and now is nearing a stature of reality, thanks to many donors and devoted workmen, under the dedicated leadership of our Superintendent of Buildings, Wilton Duckett. More goals remain to be achieved, but these too shall be given us as realities in due time. We have the joy of living in a creative and dynamic period of world history, when all men everywhere seek and strive for peace and the lasting values of the Good Life. t MR. He is a biology major and a member of both the varsity basketball and baseball teams. He has been an honor student and has served as President of the Student Association this year. ' ' : %K §: ' f ■ ' - !? ' ' ' ' $■$£$¥ ■• ' -■ Jimmy Alewine, of Demorest, Ga., is a sociology major. He is married and has three children and has worked as a radio announcer at WCON in Cornelia. He is president of the Future Teachers of Amer- ica and has consistently been placed on the Dean ' s List since attending Piedmont. 12 NANCY NORTON, whose home is High- lands, North Carolina, came to Piedmont in 1958 a graduate of Brevard Junior Col- lege. During her two years spent on our campus, she has been: Treasurer of the Junior Class, an active member of the Student Christian Association, the Gamma Chi Literary Society, and the Leslie Jones Chapter of the Future Teachers of America. Nancy, whose major is elementary edu- cation, is now teaching in the Gainesville Junior-High School in Gainesville, Georgia. ASHTON GODLEY, from Charlottesville, Virginia, is Vice-President of the Student Association. A transfer student from the University of Virginia, he has been an honor student majoring in mathematics. Ashton is also President of the Senior Class and a varsity basketball player. One of the highest honors given to any student at Piedmont College is that of being chosen as a nominee to WHO ' S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. A student faculty committee submitted the list of prospective nominees to the academic council for final selection. The committee considered the student ' s scholarship, their leadership and cooperation in educational and extracurricular activities, their general citizenship, and their promise of future usefulness. Then the approved list was sent to WHO ' S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMER- ICAN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES for final decision. Each of these students became a member of the year 1959-60. They received a certificate of recognition presented in chapel by Dean Cave, also recognition in annual publication in the form of a write-up of Piedmont and his personal records, and a listing in the Index of Colleges; benefits of the Student Placement Service provided by the organization if he needs assistance in making employment con- tacts or supplying other recommendations. STUDENT ASSOCIATION OFFICERS As a direct and representative organ of student opinion and interest, the Student Association can only function with the complete support of its members. The officers spearhead the organization ' s concern with effective student government through the various committees, with student social life in the annual dances and other campus entertainment, and with athletic competition in the intercollegiate basketball and baseball programs. THE YONAHIAN STAFF This year ' s Yonahian Staff has had its share of wild moments, of frantic searches for those missing pages, and of last-minute attempts to produce the right photo- graph, but has learned through it all a new feeling for co-operation and accomplish- ment. We have watched the miscellany of Graduation 1959, Summer School, and three quarters of classes, basketball, dances, elections, and baseball, picnics, chapel, and books combine in some semblance of order to produce this 1960 edition of the Yonahian. We have appreciated the co-operation of the administration and faculty in this student project and cannot resist a real sense of achievement in presenting this yearbook to the college. Those of us who will be on the staff next year are already planning the layouts and design for the 1961 Yonahian and are looking forward to a year of hard work and fellowship. THE P CLUB The membership of the P Club includes those varsity and junior varsity athletes who have- been awarded letters as well as the members of the cheerlead- ing squad. In fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and an interest in varsity compe- tition and intramurals, the ? Club performs a valuable service to the college. The club raises funds through various projects and purchases a block P jacket for each of its members. The annual Homecoming Dance and election of Homecoming Queen is also sponsored by the organization. COLLEGE CHOIR Great music— choral, instrumental, and congregational— has historically and au- thentically been a part of Christian worship. Chapel Choir is thus considered to be an important part of the college chapel and vesper services, and its contribution through inspiration and spiritual guidance is very great. In these words, Mr. James Lindholm, college choir director, sums up his feelings of the part Chapel Choir plays at Piedmont College. For the sixteen members of the group, Tuesday and Thursday mean joining together in the companionship of rehearsal for the coming services. This year the choir concentrated its efforts on the chapel music instead of dividing its time between that and outside concerts as in the past. Besides the regular anthems and choral benedictions the group aims at some special program for the conclusion of each quarter. STUDENT CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION The Student Christian Association is an interdenominational organization for all students, offering opportunities for Christian fellowship, service, and leadership. Our organization has tried to reinstate the S.C.A. to the prominent place it should hold at our college. Throughout the year we have been responsible for the securing of student leaders for chapel and vespers. One of the most successful projects this year was the sponsoring of a questionnaire on the problems of cheat- ing and the possibility of an honor system here at Piedmont. We also sponsored Religious Emphasis Week and have presented programs open to all students on some of the important questions college young people face. These weeks of directed study of our responsibilities as Christians were of benefit we are sure to all those who have had contact with our organization. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The Future Teachers of America is a national organization with an active branch here at Piedmont College. THETA ZETA PHI SOCIETY Supported by a foundation of LOVE, IDEALISM, and FRIENDSHIP, the Theta Zeta Phi Society began the year 1959-60 with renewed zest. All our plans have not yet been completed, but with the assistance of our sponsor, Mrs. Mildred Davis, we hope to make this year the best in the history of Theta Zeta Phi. We have a wonderful group of girls, and we are very proud of the fact that about half of our members are commuting students. To bring a closer relation- ship between the girls living in the dormitory and those living off campus has been one of our goals. GREEN SOCIETY This year proved to be very prosperous for the J. S. Green Literary Society, with the exception of their defeat by the Protropians in the annual basketball tournament. The Greens have been fortunate in receiving into their organization a large number of promising freshmen who are sure to be an asset. The Greens have entered into many worthwhile projects this year. One of these has been the renovation of the Green Room. Through the efforts of the society, their quarters have taken on a new appearance. Another project was the election of Miss Lane Carey the J. S. Green Sweetheart for 1961. The society has also initiated a college celebration of Groundhog Day and considered several sug- gestions which will make definite additions to the campus. With these ideals: integrity, dependability, and service at the forefront, the Gamma Chi Literary Society has experienced a profitable year of activities. Tradi- tionally the Break-the-ice social was given for all the new girls on campus. Candy- making, basketball games with the Theta Zetas, helping decorate for many school functions, and joint socials with our brother society, the Protropians, are some of the events we shall remember long after we leave Peidmont. The Gamma Chis hope to reemphasize the literary aspect of our society. Our goal is increased interest among our members in literary contributions as well as the preservation of their spirit of good will and wholesomeness. PROTROPIANS In keeping with the goals set up by the Protropian Men ' s Literary Society, the club has grown this year with a feeling of fellowship. With the assurance of those who know the meaning of confidence in brotherhood, the Protropians have moved forward in the feeling of respect on campus. This year they have strengthened ties with their sister society, the Gamma Chi ' s, through increased joint functions. The club also purchased a new flag for the school and continued its tradition of the daily display of the colors. Among other activities have been the sponsorship of candidates in school contests, fund-raising drives, and the initiation of a successful textbook exchange. The Prots were proud to announce victory over the J.S. Greens in their annual basketball tournament, upsetting the Greens usual success in this event. The rising enthusiasm in the club may be attributed to this and to the precedent in camaraderie established last year. THE OWL STAFF The Piedmont Owl of 1960-1961, edited by Thelma Chastain and sponsored by Mr. James Lindholm, has been published on a regular monthly basis and has been received by both the alumni and the present students with interest and enthusiasm. There has been a spirit of constructive criticism and humor which together with the coverage of campus sports and news has produced a balanced newspaper. Andy Simon; DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club is appearing again after a long period of dormancy at Piedmont. The new Drama Club presented its first production in the spring of 1959 as part of the Commencement Weekend. This year under the sponsorship of Mr. Lindholm the club has proposed several plays to be presented at college this spring. Following the traditions of fellowship and good spirits, the members have presented their own interpretation of two contemporary dramas. Through their work together as a team in both rehearsal and final production, they have felt the relative madness of the one give way to the static excitement of the other.
