Commander Sturvist was born in Chat ham Michigan in 1935 He is the son of Mrs Tyne Justina Ola of Chatham Michi gan He enlisted in the Navy in January 1954 and during his enlistment he attended Builders School in Port Hueneme Cali fornia and served with Mobile Construction Battalion NINE. After his first enlistment he attended Norther Michigan University. Upon graduation he attended Officer Cand- idate School in Newport Rhode Island and was commissioned in 1962. After receiving his commission Com- mander Sturvist served on board USS CAL- IENTE CAO-533 USS KLONDIKE CAR-225 USS TRATHEN CDD-5305 and USS STOD- DARD CDD-5663. From June 1967 to March 1969 he served as CIC Observer at Fleet Training Group San Diego, California. In May 1969 he was assigned to River Squad- ywf ron 15 in the Republic of Vietnam where he served as Chief Staff Officer and later as Commanding Officer After his tour in Viet nam he served tours at the Naval Amph ibious School Coronado California board USS DENVER CLPD 93 and at Fleet Training Center San Diego California While serving on board USS STODDARD CDD-5663 he was awarded the Navy Com- mendation Medal with Combat V and while serving as Commanding Officer River Squadron 15 he was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V. Commander Sturvist reported on board USS PIEDMONT CAD-173 for duty as Ex- ecutive Officer in March 1978. Commander Sturvist is married to the former Norma Mazzali of Munising Michi- gan. COMMAN DIN G Captam Wllliam J. Bredbeck, USN L... OFFICER Captain Bredbeck was born in Canton Oklahoma in 1932 He is the son of Mr and Mrs Donald F Bredbeck of Broomall Pennsylvania He attended the University of Pennsylvania before enlisting in the Navy in 1951 During three years of enlist ed service he attended the Fleet Sonar School Key West Florida and served on board the USS ROBERT L WILSON CDD 8475 operating in the Atlantic and Medit- erranean areas. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Acad- emy in 1958 and subsequently served in USS ROBERT L. WILSON CDD-8477 USS DAHLGREN CDLG-121 and on the staff of Commander Destroyer Division 242. Captain Bredbeck was part of the original ship s company of USS DAHLGREN which was commissioned in 1961 and operated in Cuban waters during the 1962 missile crisis. Selected as an Olmsted scholar in 1963 he attended the University of Madrid, Spain, for two years, studying at the School of Political Sciences and Economics. In 1965, he was assigned as Aide and Flag Secretary to Commander Cruiser Destroy er Flotilla Ten and participated in U S and NATO Carrier Task Group operations In the Atlantic and Mediterranean Captain Bred beck served as Executive Officer in the commissioning crew of USS O CALLAHAN CDE 10511 remaining in that position until July 1969 He was then assigned to the Office of Secretary of Defense where he remained until reporting for duty as the first Commanding Officer USS BAGLEY CDE-10693 upon commissioning of that ship in 1972. Captain Bredbeck graduated from the Naval War College in 1975 and remained on the War College Staff. He was assigned as Director of the Naval Command College from July 1976 until 'July 1977. Following seventeen weeks of CNO s Sen- ior Officer Ship Material Readiness Course in Idaho Falls Idaho Captain Bredbeck assumed command of USS PIEDMONT CAD-175 on January 13th 1978. Captain Bredbeck is married to the form- er Nancy Carol Preston of Farmington, Michigan. They have two children.

Pearson, CHC, CHC, USN USN The Master Chief Petty Officer of by f ee the Command is a vital position which demands involvement in all N'.i iii ' levels of policy making. His vast experience and mature judgement . make his opinions very valuable. During the first portion of our cruise Master Chief Traynham was W our Master Chief Petty Officer of the Command. He was relieved of the position by Master Chief For- rest. In effect the PIEDMONT was fortunate to have two capable men occupy this important position while in the Mediterranean. They played active roles in the Human Relations Counsel, the Striker Board, Planning Board for Training, Recreation Committee and Coun- sel, and the Awards Board. Over and beyond the myriad of meetings they attended, they assisted in- SKCM Lawrence W. Traynham, TMCM James Fgrregt, USN dividuals which is their greatest USN service.
