Obviously, both birthday celebrant and those who honored him enjoyed the occasion. Who but a man of Dr. Montgomery's educational stature could have guided a school system such as this through the growing pains and have brought it to its present national acclaim? We honor both our Superintendent and the educa- tional opportunities he has helped to make possible for usl Dr. E. W. Montgomery, Superintendent of the Phoenix Union High schools and Phoenix College System, of which Phoenix Tech is a part, retires this year after 28 years in the System. Dr. Mont- gomery earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Liberal Arts from the University of Indiana, honorary doctorates were conferred on him by th University of Arizona lLawl and the California College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons ll-lumanicsl Under his able leadership the System has grown from a single high school and junior college to a still expanding system of four comprehensive high schools a technical school and a college with plans well under way for the addition of two new high schools next year all this yet Phoe nix is still in its infancy' N We Dedicate This Technician to E DR E W MONTGOMERY SUPERINTENDENT who retures at the end of thus year after 28 actuon packed years of servuce to the Phoenux Unuon Hugh Schools and Phoenux College System A dreamer? PETER Mine Cllggpriatft Spares The ballad makers have made much ado about the wide open spaces of the West, yet in their twice-sung tales they have neglected to properly portray the majestic bigness of the open miles of western country where the horizon refuses to stay still, where the land itself somehow seems to elude the most handsomely tailored adjective, however melodiously it may be warbled. lt is a land that has not allowed itself to be gentled by the plow, or which has been groomed and bordered with hedging shears. The works of man are minor interruptions in undulating distance, his brave little cities and towns incon- sequential pauses in the pageantry of immensity. Shining rails and the broad highways neither fetter nor bind the vagrant and endless miles that seem to roll on and on without beginning or end. These pathways of steel and asphalt merely emphasize the bigness and confirmation of a landscape that defies the measuring tape. They are, at best, delicate ribbons of travel, following the contours of least resistance, to carry as easily and speedily as possible the heavy load of commerce under which the wheels- of our Nation groan night and day.
