BOX 15087 PHOENIX, ARIZONA 85018 September 24, l969 MEMORANDUM TO: The Staff of the l97O Phoenician SUBJECT: Your Unique Challenge FROM: John I. Yellott, Headmaster ln the original Latin, memorandum means something which must be remembered, and this communication mentions matters which you should bear in mind as you go about the myriad tasks involved in the production of a yearbook. l. Whatever appears in print automatically acquires far greater importance than its subject matter might justify if it were left in manuscript. The fact that a sentence has been set in type and, by one process or another, printed on a previously blank page, gives far greater weight to your words than you may realize when you write them. Hence, give careful thought to what you put into your one edition of the Phoenician. Someone will read it a century from today! 2. Printed words take on permanency as well as authority, so, after you have chosen them with care, spell them correctly. The typographer's work must be checked carefully, for there are gremlinsflook them up in your F. and W.!Q lurking in the linotype machine, waiting for a chance to turn your prose or poetry into Hetoain shrdluu or its equivalent. Proofread your copy with care and then do it again when the galleys arrive! A 3. Someone of nOte is reported to have said to a newspaper reporter: 'U care not what you write about me, but spell my name correctly.U In the Phoenician, your readers will care what you write about them, and they will be especially sensitive about misspelled names and incorrect cap- tions under their photographs. Make sure that the names and faces agree particularly on those crowded pages where the pictures of the little people appear, and when they are grown to man's and woman's estate, they will rise up and call you blessed. 4. Future generations of PCDS people - students, parents and faculty - will form their opinion of the Class of l97O from this edition of the Phoenician, because it is yours, so labor diligently with taste, humor and imagination in its creation. Your predecessors have set a high standard in the first five Phoenicians, so with your worthy triumvirate in the lead, fall to work and let the bird fly to new heights this year! MMV' ff :John I. Listen and hear time saying you were silent long before you came to life and you will again be silent long after you leave it, why not be a little silent now? Hush yourself, noisy little man. Time hushes all. The gong of time rang for you to come out of a hush and you were born. The gong of time will ring for you to go back to the same hush you came from. Winners and losers, the weak and the strong, those who say little and try to say it well, and those who babble and prattle their lives away, Time hushes all. There is only one horse on the earth and his name is All Horses. There is only one bird in the air and his name is All Wings. There is only one fish in the sea and his name is All Fins. There is only one woman in the world and her name is All Women. There is only one child in the world and the child's name is All Children. There is only one Maker in the world and His children cover the earth and they are named All God's Children. Oh, if I could have I'd have made you a sunny sky. Hello's the word before good-bye. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it shines yet the things I want are seldom mine. How much of summer can we hold before we turn and find we're old? The things our mirrors tell us are all lies Hello's the word before good-bye. Sometimes it's dark, sometimes it's fair yet when I go home at night nobody's there. Perhaps the next wind that blows in will bring you back to me again. Ken Pellot here Paul Fredrik Heiervang Dear P.C.D.S., Many thanks for letting me come to spend a whole year in Phoenix. I can certainly say that I really love this place. The nature is beautiful, the people are nice to me, and a nice family have I got to stay with during these months. Even if the school is harder than I supposed it to be, it will give me an experience I never would have a chance to get back later in my life. You pupils of P.C.D.S. should be proud of belonging to a school like this. Not all schools have teachers who show so much interests in their pupils as P.C.D.S. None of us are grown up yet, even if we think so. We are not qualified to take the responsibilities of what we do. Therefore it is good to have teachers who are able to lead us up to the age where we understand what ed- ucation means for our future. Uusally, the young people do not discover this before it is too late. Think about it, and do not let bad ideas influence you! I will give a special thanks to those who have showed and show me and my Swedish friend Bjorn Larsson at- tention. Bjorn and I really enjoyed the river trip right after school started, even if our stumps became sore. It was really an experience. Many thanks for everything, and I hope that we will have a lot of fun together the rest of the school year. 1969-70 Swimming Soccer Ski-Club Such a stimulating clazzzzzz, . . Steve McQueen For the seven years I have spent in P.C.D.S. I have little to say. Wow! What a neat place! was what I thought back in the sixth grade, but I soon found it was practically like any other place. Middle School was just one place for industrious study and offered little in possi- bilities. Upper School came and I felt that a new spark had come into life, but I was soon dis- illusioned by falling grades and endless review. But in some areas I really excelled except for one or two drops and new methods of classwork really picked my interest. I discover- ed new horizons in several places but my age-old way of math still stuck with me. Now I feel that despite all my problems, my life at P.C.D.S. has been worthwhile and educational and great possibilities might come out of all those underclassmen who are suc- ceeding my years here. See the fool, no one cares about him. For he is a different world, without the bonds of hate. See the one on the ground, no one cares about his fate. For he is thefool, different, new, and in love. In love with death, for in it only peace it can bring. He is lying there reeking with odor, no one mourns for him. There are no tears or weeping, for no one cares. When we die we will not smell, forthat is only forthe unlucky. Pssst! You will reek with odor when you die, and I hope to God, no one will cry! Take tomorrow and head toward bewildering oceans where waves of laughter spray tears on all the rest- less children. Now choosing for a moment, I remember: the silence of rainy days and waiting for noth- ing, sounds of children in the playground carefree sound that makes us laugh and sing with them, the lush green forest growing from empty glass bottles. . .the sun in the darkness filling the quiet times, the little blond angel of springtime...the strawberry-blond devil of summer.. .images of childhood, black rooms, closed doors, wide green lawns that need to be cut, sitting in a tower feeling the sunset outside. . .encased in a warm shell Thou hast tamed the curs'd shrew .... again and watching the snow fall. And he answered, saying: Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights. But your ears thirst for the sou nd of your heart's knowledge. You would know in words that which you have always known in thought. You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams. And it is well you should. The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea, And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes. But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure, And seek not the depths of your know- ledge with staff or sounding line. For self is a sea boundless and measure- less. Say not, l have found the truth, but rather, l have found a truth. Say not, I have found the path of the soul. Say rather, I have met the soul walking upon my path. For the soul walks upon all paths. The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed. The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals. That's the world after death. I thought it looked just like the land we'd been traveling and couldn't see why we should have to die. Lee grabbed me and pulled me over the cliff- both of us falling.
