ANN DYKMAN Q MONA TALER Portraits by Bob Wilcox Studio Foreword The years of 1961 and 1962 were troubled ones. Often our minds were made uneasy by thoughts of war and nuclear explosions. Because men could not or would not agree, the whole world seemed to hide be- hind an explosive truce which might shatter into bits at any moment scattering chaos and destruction through- out the nations. For the Christian, however, these two years presented a never-paralleled opportunity for witness and service for Christ. While the frightened world built fallout shelters, we serenely faced the future secure in the knowledge that with the Psalmist we could put our trust in the shadow of His wings. 1 And so the yearbook staff chose to highlight the 1962 BEACON with a shadow, the protecting shadow of the love of God. Yea, in the SHADOW OF THY WINGS will I make my refuge, until these calamities be ozzerpastf' V Psalm 57:1 Table of Contents ADMINISTRATION ...... 6 STUDENT BODY ..... ....... John 15:5 Administration HOWARD J . KROBER Superintendent Mr. Howard J. Krober deserves a pat on the back for the fine job he has done this year as acting superin- tendent for Phoenix Christian High School. He has taken a great interest in the social and educational as- pects of the school. During the past three years, he has served as public relations representative and teacher. This year he assumed the responsibilities of superin- tendent. Cod has surely been good in sending us a fine Christian man like Mr. Krober. The Superintendenfs office is one of the busiest offices on the school campus. Board of Directors SEATED: Robert Gonoway, Eston Skinner, Frank Raymond, Ralph Eaton, Glenn Smith. STAND- ING: George Van Liew, B. G. Stillion, Marvin McCarthy, James Weed, Wayne Steiner, Ezra Weed. They not only take a keen interest in the academic, spiritual, and social interests of the students, but they share the burdens and responsibilities in maintaining the fine administration of the school. The members of the Board represent many pro- fessional and vocational areas as well as many different churches from all over the valley. The Yearbook Staff worked hard all year on the actual pages, but the Ad Staff, too, deserves a share in the glory because this book would not have been possible without the sale of ads. These students have been a real testimony as they have gone to the different businesses of the community as repre- sentatives of not only the Beacon and the school but also the Lord. Sponsor, Mr. Brown fs c Y S Cou, ar H i-Lites About every two weeks during the school year, our student body eagerly waited for something. Homecomin Of all the exciting and memorable events during the school year, Homecoming ranks as one of the highest. No school year would be complete without it. Each class started working weeks in advance to make this an unforgettable night of nights. The Sen- iors may proudly take credit for making the float, beautifully decorated in royal purple and white, which sets the stage for the royal family. The Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors also take part by making decorations which add to the festive atmosphere. As the long-awaited evening arrives, we feel excitement in the air. At the end of the first half, the royal court makes its way onto the field. Riding on the float are the freshman attendants, Janet Smiser and George Ross, the sophomore attendants, Melba Moore and Ricky Bartelsg and the junior attend- ants, Betty Medaris and Jack Hafer. The two senior couples follow in new convertibles as at last the winners are announced. The senior attendants are introduced as Lindy Lovett and Lynn Ragsdale. Now all attention is focused on the remaining couple as handsome Stan Dykman and lovely Peggy Owens are presented as this year's Homecoming King and Queen. Margie Wright, last year's queen, presents her crown to Peggy as Stan accepts his crown from last year,s king, Phil Smith. The crowd of excited spectators gives the royal couple Warm applause as they leave the field. To highlight an already grand evening, the royal family reigns over Stairway to the Stars, a party given in their honor after the game. To he sure, the 1961 Homecoming is a successful one. She has been very active in many areas es- pecially in music. Her freshman year she sang in the glee clubg the next three years Judy blended her voice in the A Cappella Choir, and in her senior year she received the honor of being a part of the girls' trio. Aside from this, she has been an officer in the Spanish Club, and a member of the pep club. Judy has been active in the T.F.Y. club where she was an officer and a part of the quiz team. This year in addition to her other activities, she has written stories for the newspaper and helped in biology as a lab assistant. Judy was part of the stage crew for the last two class plays, and, as is to be expected from the Valedictorian, she is a member of the National Honor Society. Make a note of that! He is considered by everyone at P.C.H.S. a man of Christian testimony, character, and great ability in Working with sports and the young men of our school. Most certainly he is appreciated by all. LES FINGER Although this is only his second year at P.C.H.S., Wayne Kindall has been a great asset to our athletic staff. As a college graduate who participated regularly in sports, he has become both coach and ,friend to the members of his teams. This year he has shouldered the responsibilities of varsity basketball, varsity base- ball, and junior varsity football. Besides this, he has been assistant coach for varsity football. During his short time at Christian High, Coach Kindall has be- come a favorite with all and has helped to establish our Christian testimony on the athletic field. WAYNE KINDALL A person who has given much to those boys who could not take part in varsity activities is Tom Johnson. Under his direction and instruction, the freshman football team placed third in the conference and set a new record for P.C.H.S. Also, he coached jlunior varsity basketball and baseball. In all of these sports, Coach Johnson and his teams have upheld the shining light of Christian High. ki . wa s E Qs 'B gf SLE :,. v if 3 'Q-i. The Cougar team received more injuries this year than in all other years of foot- ball combined, and this fact made everyone on the team try much harder. Team spirit was high all season and although only two games were won, the season was felt to be a real success. Building a basketball team with only two lettermen is not a very easy task, but Coach Wayne Kindall has clone a pretty fine job. This year's squacl had only three seniors coupled with five juniors and two sophomores who have now gained much needed experience for next year.
