Martin, M.A. New York University Junior,.Senior Electives Chairman The study of the English language is probably the most important course offered to high school students, since grammar and vocabulary skills are used daily in oral communication. At Phillipsburg High School, En- glish is offered in numerous diversified courses for juniors and seniors. These courses range from the study of American literature and the study of grammar skills to basic composition and the study of comical and un- usual literature. For the skilled student, Creative Writ- ing, Writing for the College-Bound, and Public Speak- ing are only a few of the courses offered to expand his intelligence. This diversified method of offering En- glish electives is in its third year and is popular with the upperclassmen. For the upperclassmen, however, the requirements are very different. They must take stan- dard college, general, or business English during their first two years, and only in the spring of their sopho- more year may they choose the English electives of their choice. Mr. Richard Buralli, M.A. Moravian College Lehigh University Spanish German Chairman Foreign Language The ability to converse is a skill which is taken for granted by most people. The Foreign Language De- partment of Phillipsburg High School specializes in teaching the art of conversation in Spanish, German, Latin, or French to any student during his four years in high school. The study of any foreign language is a difficult task, but when a student masters some gram- mar skills in another language, he receives maximum selflsatisfaction While he is also serving to strengthen this grammatical usage of the English language. Vari- ous methods are used to enhance the student's interest in his foreign language class. Films, songs, skits, and individual projects are only some ofthe devices which add purpose to the foreign language classes. The study ofanother language provides the student with a certain insight to the culture and life styles ofthe foreign coun- try as well, and in todayls World ofturmoil, the bi-ling- ual student may bejust the person to bridge the interna- tional communication gap and start the spark of brotherhood burning.
