THE PHII LIPIAN the nlght seemed to penetrate to my very bones and the uncanny darkness somehow unnerved me fllllng my mmd wrth vaoue half realized fancles and dread As I went on my mmd persrs ently dwelt on Poe s wtld fantastlc stones, so full of the horror of death Volces whxch were not of thas world seemed to Whlsper rn the nlght wmd, and my eyes began to plcture strange terrlble oblects n he darkness whlch pressed upon me and welghed me down hke an mvlsxble hand Somewhere off rn the nrght an unearthlv snarling crv broke upon the alr I started ln terror at the sound but reason told me that xt was only the cry of a fox Then the sxlence settled tn more elnll and death ly than before whlte at the left srde of the road It was oblong IU shap and had the appe rarce or a tombstone 1-iastuy scratchmg a match the last one I had I auvanced resolutely To my ehagrrn and strll more to mv rehef, If proved to be only a guxoc board Somewhat heartened to see how ground less had been my fe rs, I walked on and soon reached a place where the road ran through an especially dark a d gloomy bxt of forest On the rxght slde the la d lose to a consrderable helght, formrng an excel lent sheep pasture, whlle at some dlstance to the left was a deep treacherous marsh Close on both sldes of the road however, there was a belt of trees, wh ch threw thelr dark gnarled branches against the sk, and deepened the shadows below I had advanced some dtstance u to these woods, wher suddenly a y gue feehng that I was berng followed caused me to turn around Whether my ear had caught some shght rustlem the under brush or hoyv the yvarnlng came I can not tell Looklng back I sawawhlte object emerge from the shadows, several rods away, by the rlght srde of the road and come slowly IH my dlrectlon Cold drops of sweat stood out on my forehead, whtle my heart stopped beatxng for an ln stant ThlS could be no harmless guxde board, for lf came nearer and nearer and once a twlg snapped beneath lt Wlfh a half IIIZITICUIZIC cry, I turned and fled Never had I run so before Fear whxch had at Hrst held my hmbs lmmovable, noyv spurred me on Castxng a hasty glance behrnd I saw to my horror that the creat and even worse, that nt was gammg steadlly Un and or we sped through the dark ness, and soon I heard the sound of hoofs on the road behind Try as I m1ght these grew more and more dlstlnct ttll, just as we were emerglng from the woods they sounded close at my heels By thls tune the moon had rlsen and threw the pale ghostly hght upon tne sombre forest, yet I oared not look around, I only ran on wlth my last remammg strength Then suddenly my foot struck a rock and I yvas thrown headlong 1nto a deep mud puddle Wlth a Hnal desparrrng effort, I ralsed my self, drrpplng wlth the muddy water to a half srttxng posxtlon 'I here rn the road, not ten paces drstant stood the dread pur suer Nancy, my corset lamb' AFS'l6 lb .
