The annual staff dedicates the 1967 annual to
a man who devoted thirty-nine years of service to
Phillips and its students, Coach A. L. Dawson.
Mr. Dawson coached football, basketball and
baseball during much of his time here at Phillips.
He led the Red Raiders to the city and county cham-
pionships in football. Severaltimes under his coach-
ing, the baseball team brought home trophies signi-
fying championships. In the classroom he coached
the students in algebra, geometry and trigonometry
- any and every kind of math that was offered at
We lost a truly great teacher and fine man when
Coach Dawson retired in the spring of 1964. Students
who had him will forever remember the phrases
"Mamma, mamma, mamma, Coach is flunkin' me"
and "back in 1492, when I was ayoung squirt" and
"memory, oh, memory."
A member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity,
Coach Dawson graduated from Howard College. He
taught and coached at Tuscaloosa High School for
two years and gave the school its mascot name,
"Black Bears," before coming to P. H. S.
Coach and Mrs. Coach Qas he calls herj reside
in Homewood. Both are members of the Dawson
Memorial Baptist Church, whichwas named in honor
of his father, the first preacher for the congregation.
Phillips is proud to have had Coach Dawson on
its faculty for the thirty-nine years he was here:
and as a small token of our admiration, the yearbook
staff dedicates this book to him.
