PEACE The orgy has ended And the fires of war are dead. Men now gaze at the rusting machines Which once they held in dread. They look—and smile—and forget The human lives that were expended To put pulse into those engines of death. The conqueror’s drumbeat We had scarcely supplanted With the dirge for the glorious dead When we began to forget the things we had chanted And then laid greedy hands on the spoils of war. While the four horsemen ravaged those in defeat Our statesmen screamed Peace to the world. The fires were dead But men’s eyes still shined At the memories of total war. Thoughts of the gory glory turned their eyes blind So that they lashed out at each other in rage. In many streets the blood ran red But still we clung to the dream of peace. Such was the night— But now the dawn is near The sun of peace is rising Shrouded yet with clouds of fear. The dove is fighting the eagle And the victor will be right—not might. This war-wracked earth will at last have peace. Sam Wet more
