EXCESS BAGGAGE As we step on our rocket ship, preparing to leave for Mars, we remember that there are a few things we have accumulated at Phillips which the lower classmen might need or use, enjoy or misuse, as the case might be. Here are the ways the grads dispose of their most treasured possessions. Stedman Riesinger leaves his jokes to Gail Monteabaro, in the hope that she might remember them. Jack King gives his ability to “love that one little girl to Quintus Fuller who seems to be doing quite nicely. Jimmy Bethune finds himself recipient of Bob Kimzey's sports’ page; Joyce McAteer inherits the headaches of Mirror makeup. Weaver Wood leaves Anne Speer to the Speech Department. Little Bettye McEachcrn is given the secret of charm and personality by Clarice Graves—from one blonde to another; Virginia Edwards sends her stunning smile to Mary Arline Perry, who has plenty to begin with. Petite Bev Latimer makes Peggy McMorries heiress to her pert ways and wiles. Margaret Ann O'Neill sends her ability to get along with everyone to her successor in Mnemosynean, Helen Bradford. Mary Agnes Brooks donates her place as “Deadline typist to Kathryn Walston, and a bottle of Kolor-bak to touch up the gray hairs thus acquired. Wynelle Merrell leaves her scholastic ability to Betty Ruth Smith—who can use it—and Bobby Henderson donates his ability to “brown to Jimmie Bowers who has used it. Allen Clark and Bettye Lassetter send their good looks to Wert White and Ruth Stone, knowing they will be well used. Jim Ingram receives from Allan Worthington all the girls’ admiration and a liberal portion of cool disdain. Brown Cooper and Ed Lathem will their confusion in Mr. Baranelli’s class to Bill Tuck, with fervent hope that he succeeds better than they did. Ruth Shugerman leaves her musical abilities and stage presence to John F. Gay III, The third, that is! Roberta Espy gives her common sense to all Phillipians—most of whom need it. EXCESS BAGGAGE Bcttie Dudley leaves her ability to make everyone love her to Jo Ann Wasley; Marion “Mac McCoy donates her wit to Rosemary Graddick. Jackie Robinson divides her artisitic talent equally among Chris Malone, Bob Cothran, and Frank Slier, with a lot of hard work thrown in for good measure. Billy Kinnebrew leaves his painted blue jeans to John Savage—with the chance that John can have them taken up. Jimmy Wolfe wills his ability to get sent out of study hall to Frank Bragan. Gloria Carruba gives her success in speech to Bettyc Lee Biddle, Jane Adams and Dorry Ann Hayes. Philip Easter tonefully sends his high “C’s to the Boy’s Glee Club. Bill Hull gives little Tommy Langley his ability to wow the ladies. Are there any more? No—there isn't time. And as the class of January ’48 bounds into the rocket ship, we sincerely hope our momentous will and last testament will help keep our memory alive in dear old Phillips. JANIE EVANS THE WORLD OF THE FUTURE The other day on my way back from Mars in the Trans-Universe Space Lines new air ship, I began playing with the latest addition to the world of science, the Televisoscope, which enables you to watch anyone or anything you wish by simply manipulating a few dials. Turning the dials I saw brief glimpses of the members of the class of January ’48. Caught a glimpse of Professor John William Cook. Dean of Yale, going to the polls to vote for Stanford Davidson as next president of the United States. Rose Bearden. Betty Fix, and Bet lye Frock have just completed their courses at Auburn and have already obtained their M.R.S. degrees. Tuning in on a passing space ship I saw Allan Worthington and Robert Butsch, End and Fullback of the Sky Rockets Professional football team, on the way to play the Mars’ great team of gridders. Walter Lowery, world’s greatest veterinarian, has recently been awarded the Silver State Medal for saving General Bob Kimsey’s famous white horse from certain death. Charley Maze, brilliant attorney, has just, been elected to the State Legislature. The world renowned dietician, Betty Stubbs, has figured out a diet for chickens that make them lay hard boiled eggs. Dr. Billy Hull has signed a contract with Betty which gives him exclusive medical rights to everyone who eats the eggs. Jim Rooks has just become manager of the Rialto Theater. Incidently, the picture showing there this week stars the celebrated operatic soprano in “Jigalo , one of the many famous operas written by another famous Phillipian, Barbara McClain. CHE WORLD OF THE FUTURE Sam Wetmorc has just won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry on his recent book of sonnets and rhymes. I saw Travis Calton in his swank down-town barber shop on 20th Street trimming Russell Banks side-burns. Addle Sperling, who is recognized as the outstanding woman doctor in America, was recently chosen Woman of the Year . I spied Manly Yeilding being listed as first among the ten best dressed men of America . Richard Shamburger has just completed a portrait of Secretary of Army, Eddie Tritt. Rick Elliot was seen warming up in preparation for his first season in pro-basketball. Just then I felt a sudden tilt and the machine broke down. There was nothing to do but sit back in my seat and wait for my return to earth to look up all these famous Phillipians. Thomas E. Smith BEST LOOKING MOST STUDIOUS MOST ATHLETIC WHO'S WHO Mr. and Miss PhiUipian................Manly Yeilding, Jean Barnett Most Likely to Succeed ...............Manly Yeilding, Ann Mootv Best Looking,.........................Allen Clark, Bettye Lasseter Most Studious..........................John Cook, Adelle Sperling Most Athletic....................Allan Worthington, Marion McCoy PEACE The orgy has ended And the fires of war are dead. Men now gaze at the rusting machines Which once they held in dread. They look—and smile—and forget The human lives that were expended To put pulse into those engines of death. The conqueror’s drumbeat We had scarcely supplanted With the dirge for the glorious dead When we began to forget the things we had chanted And then laid greedy hands on the spoils of war. While the four horsemen ravaged those in defeat Our statesmen screamed Peace to the world. The fires were dead But men’s eyes still shined At the memories of total war. Thoughts of the gory glory turned their eyes blind So that they lashed out at each other in rage. In many streets the blood ran red But still we clung to the dream of peace. Such was the night— But now the dawn is near The sun of peace is rising Shrouded yet with clouds of fear. The dove is fighting the eagle And the victor will be right—not might. This war-wracked earth will at last have peace. Sam Wet more ENGINEERS of the Class of May, 1948 Harry Mabry .... Lee Noel .. Billy Waine Chief Engineer____ Assistant Engineer Clerk............. OUR BELOVED She stands guardian over the thousands who proudly call her beloved. She opens her heart to receive the rich and poor, the small and great. She is to them a symbol of virtue, wisdom, culture and beauty. The movement of life is vibrant within the channels of her soul She glows with radiant health and strength. She is a lady—all our own. She supplants a lady gone before her Whose prestige is still felt in the majestic city. But in her own right our lady enjoys honor and respect. And She excels all others in strength and wisdom. Iler beauty is carved in the hearts of those who have learned to love her. Not boasting, but daily proving herself greater than any, She is a lady all our own. Not discouraged or dismayed by remorse from envious ones, Never devoting from the principles that make her truly great, She moves forward with noble dignity, As a lady who is worthy of the name she has made for herself, Which name shall be perpetually on the lips of her loved ones— For she is a lady all her own.. Years come and go but her features change not. She looks no older, for youth is her heart. She has seen the young grow old and pass away. Maybe to be forgotten by some—but not by her. Remembering them she warmly opens her heart to their children, For she is a lady all our own. So truly do we love our lady That we can not say good by— Then let us take forever in our heart that memory of our alma mater. For Phillips is a lady—all our own. JOHN IE LOVELESS. Jr. EXCESS BAGGAGE We’re off! As the earth grows smaller beneath us and we look through the windows of the rocket ship heading for Mars, we, the members of the May, 1948, graduating class, are reminiscing over our four year cruise at Phillips. Joe Brown wills his inimitable wit to Jane Martin and his bubble gum to Miss Lynch. Betty Louise Hightower’s friendly smile goes to Margaret Ann Wynn. Harriet Rosenthal gets Bettye Lee Biddle’s exciting voice, while Leona Roth is the recipient of Betty Ann Grace's dramatic talent. Helen Bradford's beautiful dark hair and Dorry Ann Hayes’ lovely complexion are left to Mildred PIdwards and Rosemary Graddick. Needless to say, Bill Strange is taking “Stoney” to Mars with him. Margie Stratmocn gives Charles Neville a large bottle of developing fluid along with a flash bulb attachment for his camera. Martha Berry bequeathes her charm to Mary Elizabeth Wallace, while Lorna Wiggins and Vivian Case bestow upon Harris Gordon and Basil Lepp their scholastic ability. Henry Fell and Harry Mabry hand the reins of the Thespians to Gene Cooper and Thomas Moxley. Sylvia Stocks’ nimble fingers go to Judith Berry and her loyalty to Patsy Hornbuckle. Bob Groover gets Frank Sher’s good looks and Betsy Gore’s go to Mary Ann McDonald. Shirley Sams wills Margaret Reid her long string of masculine admirers, and Christine Malone gives her charmed pen and brush to Ralph Connell. Linda McMeans’ sweetness is left to her sister Betty, and Walter Jones' and Perry Covington's good dispositions to Charles Whitton and Tommy Hughes. EXCESS BAGGAGE A gift of Margie Price’s dimples is made to Martha Shackleford. Wert White’s car can be had by any imaginative soul who can take it apart and put it together again the way only Wert can. Pete Clifford’s enthusiasm, Owen Wallace's grace, Don Secord’s blush, and Betty Jane Rush’s resourcefulness can't be willed to anyone because we know of no earthly way to separate them from their present owners. Ellen Taylor leaves her warm laugh to Mary Elizabeth Jones, while Bill Cornelius gives his infectious grin to Reese Mallette. JOYCE McATEER CHE WORLD OF THE FUTURE Back to earth again! We've been away so long we’re just wondering what ever happened to the graduating class of May, 1948. Charles Hall, New Manager of the Powers Modeling agency, has just been cited as the best authority on legs. Modeling that “New Look are Betty Vaughn, Nan Rasberry, and Genevieve Toombs. Katrina Pinkard, Pat McCain, Newton Maloney, Gene Carden, and Taylor Thorington arc wandering through darkest Africa converting the savages. Joyce McAtecr is editor of the New York Times and Joe Staab finds himself cartooning for the funny papers. Bill Cornelius has made himself a fortune by organizing a “Lonely Hearts Club . His assistants, Martin Smith and Harry Prater, are doing well for themselves, too. Bill Tucker is now in the dairy business, and Bill says Ben Phifer and Lee Noel are his best hands!! Walter Jones finds himself in the jeep business. His company has reached world wide fame for its little red ones. Bill Grayson, Sam Peeples, Ed Calloway are now dentists. Always knew they didn't have hearts. Crutcher Ross and Edgar Watts are architects from way back, in designing dog houses. Bridge-builder Bobby Crumbaugh is planning a nice one that will go right over P. H. S. Nat Partrige, Marian Steadman. Ann Speer and Thomas Noble are the main characters in “Hamlet now playing on the corner of Hollywood and Vine! Jimmy Kyle and Jack Chapman are leaving for the Olympics soon to compete for the world title in tennis. Aubrey Miree, Ormond Frazier, Bill Watson and Earl Trafton are operators of the biggest, bestest hamburger joint this side of Glocca Mora (Even better than H. B., Paid political adv.) Bun Davie is with a national hook-up. On it we find Stanley Schultz, Sarah Robinson, Harvey Marshall, Ronald Henderson and John Gay really “hittin' the downbeat.” Charles Vaughn is going to town with his yo-yo factory; Bill Petree with his lawn mower, Larry Quick and his blue jeans, and good 01’ Billy Hanlin are just pluggin’ along down memory lane. Catherine Jones and I are living in a little white duplex with green shutters alul a weeping willow in the front yard down in Laguna. On the same street we see Ann Wansley, Virginia Thomas, Marilyn Stringfellow, Jo Ann VVasley, Charles Cameron, Bill Wilson, Allen Tate, Bill Tuck, Joe Travis, John Ebaugh and Jan Marstrander.
