CURTAIN CALL PRESS NOTICES Well, I see by tin's latest copy of the News that my old friends of the Class of ‘47 are certainly doing well for themselves. These sports page pictures of the World's Championship Chicago Bears really show that Jack Demedicis and Robert Parker haven't changed a bit in the ten years since we graduated! And here is Jimmy Walker all ready to win in the Olympic track meet. I ll have a hard time deciding what show to take in. I’m afraid! Here's an ad for Hamlet, starring Richard Pizitz. and I certainly would like to hear that quartet of Frances Davidson, Theresa Marino, Betty Houston, Lillie Rusta, who outshine the Andrews Sisters, not only in number but in popularity. On the more romantic side, here 1 see that Preston Jones and Barbara Hahn are again co-starring—this time in the premiere of Jack Edwards’ comedy of high school life, “Blind Date . Or why don’t I take in that movie at the Capitol! I really should see Gerald Banks in his now famous role of “Lil Abner ”. Those photographs of him that Ann Cost and Raymond Walker had in Life last week showed why they are now movie-land’s ace photographers. Or 1 could go in for the higher side, and go to Carnegie Hall to hear Mary Ann Englebert give her second piano concert. And Jack Biddle, of Yale, is lecturing at Town Hall on this year’s Pulitzer Prize winners, which include Larry Franks and Johnnie Burnett, well-known poets, and Willine Paxton, columnist of the Washington Star. It’s a lot of trouble to dress and go out, though, so I guess I’ll just stay here and listen to the radio—tonight’s the night for the Chesterfield Supper Club, featuring Betty Ann Browning. Then I could hear that report from the White House, as President Carey Chitwood and Secretary of State Jimmy Bloom report on the work done by the Atomic Energy commission headed by Dr. Jimmy Levenson. This commission is made up of Bobbie Ragland. Don Braswell, and Max Greer. And I could listen to Leo Creest, who has just received the award as the best radio comedian of 1957. as he guest-stars on the program of the bobby-socker’s latest idol. Rod Hughes. Over here I see that Major Douglas McDowell and (.’apt. Thomas Candle are back in town alter winning fame tor their lead rsliip of the latest explorations near the North Pole. Look at this write-up of the International Convention of Business Women! It surely is filled with Phillipians: Dean Foster, who runs her own Commercial Art school, as well as Mildred Carpenter, Sidera Yuille, and Mary Louise Harrison, who are the officers of the club. Of all people, Joseph Kennedy, who was recently elected the best dressed and most successful minister of 1957, was the main speaker of the convention. PRESS NOTICES On tin society page, I see that Billie Ann Odum has returned after a stay in the Philippines with her husband, who is in the Navy, while Nonna Jean Whyte, Nell Merrell, and Jean Pesnell gave a party for the recent brides who have joined them among the “happily marrieds,’’ Ann Montgomery, Sidera Vuille, Joline Baker and Betty Noblitt. Also I see that Frances Hurd, Doris Knight, and Rita Loyd have been appointed to make up a commission in Washington to see that ladies’ bats are more sensible from now on. Of course this was President Chitwood’s idea. Here’s an item about Bebe Meadows, the new superintendent of nurses at Norwood Hospital. Famous dietitian Margaret Adams is doing outstanding work there with Dr. Edward Whitley. Boy! just look at these pictures! Frances Barton, Mary Diamantakos, Sue Kirksey are all competing in the Miss America Contest of 1957. What! the Flashbulb Society is having a difficult time deciding who is the most photogenic blond: Jackie Miller, Meriam Wilder, Joyce Sanderson, or Margaret Anderson. Here’s an ad for two new schools, a dancing school to teach the right technique of jitterbugging headed by Billy Elliott, while Venette Cox and Bobbie Jean Cummings are running a school to teach girls how to win friends and charm the socks off people. The old married men, Fred Phillips, Otis Price and Robert Cox, are giving a bachelor dinner for John Holcomb and Bill Holmes, who have recently joined their ranks. New York has gained a top designer in Martha Holladay. I’m sure the women’s styles will change quite favorably now. Betty Jean Wansley and Bruce Andrews are teamed together trying to develop a jet-propelled plane that will travel faster than light. Here I see where Margarita Ciuro is in Spain on a diplomatic mission. Believe it or not. our city has gained a new manufacturing company. Issabella. Min-real. Ralph, Rickey, and Sumpter have joined forces in the manufacture of a new cough drop—“the five Smiths”. Gosh, I’ve spent the whole evening reading the paper and it’s too late to make any of those performances. Well, it just goes to show you that the Class of January 1947 must have had monopoly on talent—their achievements practically filled up this whole paper! “CALL BOARD As the curtain falls on Act One of It Did Happen Here”, we, the cast, feeling that circumstances beyond our control will prevent our appearing in Act Two, wish to post on the Call Board the following notices for those understudies who have waited so patiently for us to give them a chance at our starring roles. We give them our very best wishes for a successful season and as much fun before their curtain falls as we have had during our time before the footlights. Kerlin Travis leaves that wonderful “form” to any boy that wants to pitch baseball. Richard Harris wills his big 5-cent cigars to Harry Stewart and Claude Landrum. Don't let them get the best of you! Jeannine Wren wills her effervescent personality to Lilian Goodner. Winifred Thomas’ ever-moving drum sticks move right into Betty Sanders’ hands. Jimmy Bragan leaves the “second sack” to his little brother Frank. Billy Fenn refuses to will anything, but he will auction his Hamlet test paper off to the highest bidder. Randolph Worth and Billy Walker bestow all of their R.O.T.C. rank on Wert White and Quintus Fuller. Norma Jean Williams leaves to Kathryn Hairston her “acting ability Carey Chitwood wills his executive ability to Manly Yeilding. Session Room 206 leaves its stamps on Monday and paper on Tuesday to any poor freshman who forgets his. Bob Vann passes his hot clarinet to N. W. Mandy. Bill Phillips and Bill Walker leave the Ushers “poet’s nook” to Taylor Thorington. Billy Abel leaves all his knowledge (brown) to anyone wishing to make the National Honor Society. Charles Boyd and Eleanor Keeton donate those flaming locks to Norma DeMent and Don Secord. Please use them well. Barbara Watson gives all of her gym cups and G.L.C. letters to Shirley Perkins. Julia Ann Gilmer leaves her newspaper columns to anyone with the energy to chase news and her own accent extraordinaire to French scholar, Don Dunlap. Marilynn Cooper bequeaths her exalted Mirror board post to Eva Allgood, Joyce McAteer, or any other enterprising journalist. Those 88 ivory keys under the nimble fingers of Jean Leslie and Joy Douthit will find themselves being tinkled by Jane Slaughter, Barbara McClain, Imogene Maddox and Margaret Ann O’Neill. Vocalists Frances Davidson and Jean Holston donate their chirping ability, along with a throat spray and a box of couglulrops. to Dena Leontis, Clara Cause, or Jo and Joyce White. In the male division. Jack Bowen and John Bonduris leave their golden tones to James Bryant and James Licari. Martha Haislip isn’t leaving anything. She’s taking Sumpter Smith with her. Joseph “Lucky” Kennedy donates his ability to be an all-round swell boy to anyone sincere and enthuiastic enough for the position. Dona Jean Lindsay willingly donates her Remington in Miss Ragan’s typing class to anyone who thinks she can pass a speed test. —Oliver Thomas CURTAIN GOING DOWN Slowly the curtain (alls on the last scene of the first act of the play “It Did Happen Here . The cast of this act will long remember the wonderful times and the carefree days spent upon this stage of life. None will ever regret nor deny that he has played with the greatest cast ever assembled under one roof. The act has been divided into eight different scenes, starting at the beginning of our high school career and going on to graduation, the culmination of our efforts. Each scene has been more exciting and full of activity than the one preceding, and each has been chockful I of memorable and interesting incidents which cannot be erased from our memory. During our first semester, there was the usual worry about classes, schedules and teachers. There was also the inevitable hunt for 214 and 215. We were a smart freshman class then, leading the honor roll once and running a very close second the remaining two times. However this was about all of note which we did during our rat days, although in the following scenes many of our members became highly prominent in P. 11. S. During the second semester the “educated rats were still getting their grip on things. While we were in the second semester the high school dances after the football games were begun and attended with much spirit and enthusiasm. During the third scenes we began to look down on the lower semesters, as if we were big shots . However, we still envied those above us. The fourth and fifth semesters are well remembered by all of us. It was during these semesters that the first school radio programs, in which many of our members participated, were held. Due to much help from us, P. H. S. went over the top in two war bond drives. And also, the Junior-Senior Prom was first inaugurated. Though we were ineligible to attend, we eagerly looked forward to the next one. when we would be out in full force. Many incidents stand out in our memory as we look back at our sixth semester life. The most memorable was the return of Coach Houston with the promise of good football teams. We also again helped our school go over the top on the first day in the last war bond drive. Our class was well represented on the football field this semester. It was natural during the seventh and eighth semesters that our cfass took the lead in school affairs. One of our members took over the lead of the school when he was elected president of the student body, while another led on the gridiron, being captain of the football team We were well represented on committees, auditorium programs and in all phases of school life. Although we arc happy to be graduating, we are sorry to leave P, H. S. Many times, as we go forward on the stage of life, will we look back with fond memories on our days here. —Arnold Roth FRESHMAN SOPHOMORE JUNIOR Cr} b'Lde CLl White clouds sleeping in a blue sky Sluggish muddy rivers flowing lazily by Lightning—God's neon sign flashing off and on— Revealing God's spirit and truth, Waiting for man to feel and comprehend Ilis meaning And express it—in many mediums— So that everyone may understand. AND MISS PHILLIPIAN Margaret Ensuf.n Billy Pitts Most Popular.............................Bob Collins, Jane Lawrence Most Studious.................................Billy Cooper, Ann Fleminc Most Likely to Succeed...........................Billy Pitts, Nena Berry Best Looking.............................Jack Sparks, Margaret Enslen Wittiest............•..................Edgar Mulvaney, Audrey Mitchell THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME” The last scene of the last performance is played and over. The applause out front is good to hear, hut one can't help wondering, even while taking curtain calls, where were going from here. We've made some good friends during this run—what sort of parts will they be playing now that this show is over? Now it may he the glare of the footlights, hut I can see some names still up in lights: Raymond Box and Carol Lowry starring in a new release of “Rebecca ”, and Ann Fleming playing Lady Macbeth. The marquee of the Metropolitan Opera House gleams with the names of Howard O’Daniel, Royce Hart and James Bryant, who have filled those halls with their public—the bobby soxers. However, It Did Happen Here” turned out to be the last appearance on any stage for most of the members of its cast, for an amazing number of them have settled down into less dramatic careers: John Dunbar and John Faust are tooth extractors extraordinary, John Carmichael the youngest member of the Supreme Court, before whom David Satterwhite and Phil Drash are arguing another portal-to-portal case: whether time consumed in walking down the second floor hall of Phillips before 8:20 should be counted as time in school or not. Bobby Reynolds is succeeding as a mechanical engineer, Bill Thomas has been appointed dog-catcher, while Elvin Kanter, with soap box and hillbilly band, is touring the state, for the usual reason. In the business world the cast has some outstanding members: Don Whelan is managing editor of the Birmingham Post, Edgar Mulvaney, the house painter with the personal touch, Wesley Day, cattle rancher; Diane Durham, head of a South American firm of architects, and Ann Vann and Louise Phillips, who are raising horses and Cocker Spaniels. Some of the cast turned to the field of science: Jeanenne Stanley is working desperately to devise a formula for polka-dot paint, and is being ably assisted by technican Ann Gallagher. More adventurous careers have been undertaken by Bobbie Brown, Kenneth Spivey and Bob Hudson, who are operating a line of rockets to Mars, and Arthur Jordan, who is ascertaining the exact diameter of the earth by digging a tunnel from pole to pole, and then simply measuring the length of the tunnel. Art and music have provided fame for some who began their public appearances in “It Did Happen Here”: Wallace Clyde and Ed Holtani have just been chosen to decorate the United Nations Assembly Hall, and famous models Anne Barnett and Marion Vaughan never wear gowns designed by any one but Kitty Fouche. Pianist Beth' Whittington is the favorite soloist with Robert Herrings Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, while William Powell and his clarinet are leading the world’s favorite dance band. Married life has claimed some of our leading ladies: Sally Timmons, Marie Henley, and Lexa Magnus gave up their careers to look out for the comfort of Gene Lockhart, Bobby Crumbaugh and Adrian Tucker, who give them the highest rating as homemakers. A recent poll conducted by the Institute of Private Opinion, conducted by Doctors Lester Eargle and Norman Lee, shows that bizarre occupations have not been neglected by our friends: Bob Vance calls himself “Crime Doctor ; Virginia Powell has glorified the old task of washing—she runs a “washerteria”, and Wynne Ragland works for the Simmons people as a bed tester. Educational pursuits and literary have claimed several ex-stars: Doris Gotlieb now proudly signs her name with Ph.D. after it, and Lucy Grey Simms is teaching Latin at Phillips. Richard Tyler is serving as Poet-Laureate, a position created especially for him by Act of Congress, and Barbara Wayne is compiling a history of Phillips’ Class of 1947, which is expected to be chosen as Book-of-the-Week by all the literary critics. This 10-volume saga will give you all the occupations of those members of the class which space forbids us to mention here, so join me in the line at the book counter soon. —Ann Fleming The whistle blows, the gangplank is lowered, and eighteen score of tired actors scramble up the narrow hoard with bulging suitcases, ready to embark on a vacation from the footlights. Below them, waving tearful goodbyes, stand their ever-faithful understudies, some of whom hope to take the next boat themselves. As the anchor is lifted, the voyagers shout last-minute messages to their friends, leaving to some of them the valuable items that they forgot to pack. In the clamor, we overhear a few of these parting shooters: Robert Collins, giving his almost empty bottle of peroxide to Mr. Wood for his Chemistry 5 class, in the hope that a better use may be found for it; Bill Ezell, leaving his megaphone (peanut catcher) to Mr. Gochenour, to be used by the Spanish classes for a dunce cap; Jane Slaughter, bestowing on Anne Speer her laughing eyes, and leaving her lustrous curls to any little girl who gets caught in the rain; Billy Pitts, giving ten votes, and the stunning personality that helped him get them, to Manly Yeilding; Margaret Cay Wright, willing her knitting to anyone who can knit and keep out of teacher's sight; Mary Jo Patton and Ry Bailey, passin’ on their Southern drawls to Sam Wetmore and Jack King; Robert Rives, regretfully leaving his curly hair to Quintus Fuller; Jeanette Ruffner, willing her social “tactics to any poor struggling female; Bob Groover, tentatively acepting the bashfulness handed over to him by Aubrey Thornton; Ann White, Peggy Lay and Juanalda Jinnette, leaving their magnificent smiles to Suzie Wilder, Marilyn McAteer and Leona Roth; Billy Cooper, gladly leaving his top locker to the poor soul underneath, who deserves it, after being hit on the head by falling objects for two years; Bernard Clowdus, donating his ears to anyone desirous of a unique ap- pearance; Jack Sparks, ruefully handing over his R.O.T.C. uniform to Jimmie Bowers, along with the brass polish; Terry Thibodeau, passing on her vivacity to people who don’t eat VVheaties; Bill Branch, tossing his battered football helmet to the player with the next-hardest head; Clara Cause, leaving her affection for Miss Airheart to Harvey Marshall. Louis Perry, cheerfully bestowing his clarinet upon Mr. Mayer, together with a book entitled “How to Appreciate Jazz”. The liner moves slowly away from the pier, leaving far behind the footlights on the stage of Phillips, and disappears beyond the horizon. Bon Voyage! —Billy Coopfr PROGRAM NOTES Members of the cast of “It Did Hapnen Here , like all troupers, find that their scrapbooks are bulging with unforgettable items—places and people, events and adventures, which will be fun to remember in times to come. Carolyn Deaver’s radiant personality starts us out on page one, while the page featuring the blonde curls of Clemmie Dilworth contrasted with the dark ones of Elsie Kampakis has won the heart of even' one who looks at it. A few pages further on Gerry Falletta and Joe Lombardo have put down their practical jokes for a permanent record, and the wit of Audrey Mitchell and Edgar Mul-vaney is sure to bring back the memory of many laughs. We have a special section for SCIENCE, with Bobby Ilopwood on the first page, with a special award for that “B in Mr. Baranelli’s Physics class. On page two is Gilbert Knowlton, with a snapshot of his special experiments in the field of nuclear energy. The pages on SMILES have Ted Davies first among the boys, while Frances Harrison heads the girls. SPECIAL SUCCESSES are featured in the next section, with Nena Berry's picture at the very top of the page. Ann Steele and N. W. Mandy are, naturally, tops in their chosen fields, while the picture of Ann Fleming as Daffodil Queen, rates a page to itself. SNAPSHOTS are our next section with Margaret Enslen pictured as Phillips' good deed for the day to college. A special time exposure was taken to show A. C. Trim slaving over his Biology assignment. The next few pages are labeled rather strangely, but simply: LINES: H-m-m- Buddy Vaiden and Weldon Walker are pictured here, while Olivia Gibbs and Jane Lawrence on the following pages snow that this section is not strictly a masculine one. Sketches fill the part of our scrapbook on FHIENDSHIP. One is of Joyce Lantrip and Vera Myers, another of Alton Rikard, and others show Richard Gore, Bill Stackhouse and Hugh Spurlock. In LAUGHS Elaine Killette and Robert Martin vie for first place with Rosemary Lackey’s dry wit making her stand out. Pete McWilliams has a niche all his own in this section. Polly Phillips leads the rest in our reserved division for HAPPY IN LOVE, but Betty Lou McWhorter, Lu Herman Treece and Flossie” Wates had to be included, too. A whole section is given to those with a SWEET DISPOSITION, for there were mam possessors of this usually rare trait. Ceceil White, with her ever-ready smife is a good example, and Anne Ruth Wilson's pert remarks and ready wit are really something to remember. However, our most-thumbed section of our scrapbook bears the simple head SWELL PEOPLE, and the pages allotted just wouldn’t hold all the snapshots we wanted to include: Margaret Weaver, with her willingness to work; Cnarles Miller, “Yankee accent” and all; game Harvey Monroe, Harold Anthony, always eager to please; loyal Anne Brett, Peg” Crowe, typical in her friendliness—there is a never-ending pile of pictures which should go here. As we close the scrapbook, we realize that we’ll never really need a reminder of the years we’ve spent together—they're forever a part of us. Tonight a mystic rustling flits about the window caves A mellow echo, softly calling us to please come out and roam. Through darkened veil we heed the luring call, And tramp beneath vast heavens starred jxill. j The haloed moon, a wan illuminated sphere, Limns lurid shapes among the floating mist. Now see and hear Some nymph, dryad or blithesome fairy waving wand in woodland rite. Merry sprites about us reel and dance On a moonbeam path down the blanched grass. Perhaps we glance Wee elves dodging low in mirthful leap frog to and fro, But chirping crickets only serenade the night And bunny rabbits thump to mates hid from sight. A mottled owl darts down and screams his melancholy tale, Reply comes from a lonely whippoorwill in far-off dewy dale. In tangled vines mid crops of thorny brier A mocking bird is moved to spread throughout the air A tumbling torrent of sheer delight which turns her neighbor songsters to despair. Flurried tvinds fling wandering clouds about on high Beneath a milky, lambert sky Unending, boundless and infinite as time. Now downward swirl an aged oak to shake. And soothes and sends to sleep the nightfolk now awake. The mourning pines complain and fret for day With its sights and noise and turbulent joys reality. But God’s peace and quiet on a lonely country night Awaken height and depth of thought in me: The world God made a paradise to bless our time while we are here; What man will make of it we only guess and fear. —Richard L. Tyler, Jr. A p IT DID HAPPEN HERE By May Class Published by P. II. S. Mirror 10S Pages $1.25 Set at Phillips High School during the four-year period which culminated in June, 1947, It Did Happen Here is the story of '300 or so members of a high school class. Carefully and minutely the play traces each of these lives from its entrance on the stage to its tnunph or defeat in a pursuit of learning and fellowship. The strands are woven together into an almost perfect plot. Upon entrance on the stage the characters show the influence of the movies, the Lone Ranger, soap operas, and occasionally a smattering of Emily Post. Modifications upon these characters are inflicted throughout the remainder of the play until we see, out of the bewildered freshman who timidly set foot on a new stage of action, a confident youth gradually emerging. This is a youth who now turns to more realistic aspects of life than Tom Mix, and who succeeds in attaining the almost impossible goal of $260,000 accepted by him as his part in the Governments YVar Bond Drive. He is a youth who turns to sports, and who, if he does not become a star athlete himself, does more than his share in spurring his team to County Baseball and District basketball championships, and who faces equally victory and defeat with an air of sportsmanship. After the school’s games in the fall he actively enjoys the social life at the dances inaugurated during his school career. From the lighter side of life our youth then turns to the grind of books and emerges from the darkness to see the torch of the National Honor Society gleaming before two of his classmates at the end of their sixth semester. Twenty-four others have grasped it a semester later, while still more have a hand outstretched to reach the goal by the time of graduation. In the field of service to his school and community he sees twenty-six of his members as loyal Phillips Ushers, twenty-six enrolled in the C. L. C., seven members of the Y-Tcens, and every member of his class a member of the Junior Red Cross. So. as the production ends, and the reader closes the book, he is convinced that the characters in “It Did Happen Here”, though they may have shown evidences of stage-fright during the performance, are real people, and he looks forward to the sequel, in which these same protagonists have already been cast, “Life . —Bernard Clowdus AERONAUTICS CLUB Julian Allen, Charles Ballot, Richard Berbieh. Our graduation day was one of high resolve and intelligent dedication to the surpreme tasks of life. • Today opportunities are greater than ever before; responsibilities, heavier; the demands of life, more rigorous—thus, ideals of the widest human good-will challenge us to heroic efforts and dauntless courage. At this moment we stand face to face with a cynical generation which has twice failed to solve the problems of peace. We recall the words of Frances Bacon in his NOVUM ORGANUM: ' It is idle to expect any great advancement in sciences from the superinducing and engrafting of new things upon old. We must begin anew from the very foundation, unless we would revolve forever in a circle with mean and contemptible progress. It would be mean and contemptible progress indeed, and we should be revolving in a circle if, instead of beginning to construct the new world society based on universal law, tvc again tiy to superinduce and engraft new weapons and inventions upon an old world order. So we bid each other Godspeed! May every one of us consecrate knowledge, will, and personality, not only to succeed in our chosen business in life, but also to diffuse the highest moral and spiritual values. Most of all, may we achieve WORLD PEACE worthy of the commendation of Him, who gave us life. —The Editor PRODUCTION STUFF Publicity Director— Marilynn Cooper. Associates—Jack Edwards, Willene Paxton.
