It. using the same principle as radar, can shoot an atomic energy impulse 10 or 20 years into the future. 1 think I’ll switch on the projector and turn some long range binoculars on the destiny of some of my fellow seamen. All I can see at the moment is gold braid: wait it's Harold Baker, an admiral, no less. I see he has Tommy Head swabbing the decks for him. Looking landward 1 see Ted Bryan, the Chief Aeronautical Engineer of North American Aircraft Corporation at Inglewood. California what a handle! Bill Lucas hasn't grown an inch; he’ll always l e a Petty Officer. I notice that Cora Moss Bell is well on her way to having her own complete football team. Billy Farrell is the most successful farmer in the country. Speaking of Latins, the sc no ri I as of South America must be getting a largo charge because Bob Blanton is down there discovering oil for Gulf, he says. Fan Bearden has become the second Joan Davis. The most exclusive dress shop in town is run by Barbara Dickson. Joyce Cobb is the secretary to the president of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. Charlie Doyle can still remember roaming the halls before school. Bill McMahon has just completed the plans for a building taller than the Empire State Building. Eiizal eth Plocger is in Paris, no less, and almost a countess. Barbara FopweQ is the interior decorator for the houses that Elizabeth Anne Michaels designs—neat combination. Mr. Allen certainly leaves his mark I see Tommy Johnson still trying to figure out that trig. I see a circle of boys at the moment! Ah. yes. that is Anne Coker in their midst. One of the greatest improvements of the future is Bill Lee’s radio station specializing in painless commercials. Although Sigmund Beer is still a woman haler, Sam Boykin continues to keep up the old tradition of a girl in every port. The idol of the day has changed from Eisenhower to Aycrsenhower. Billy Buck and Tommy Sisson are eminent surgeons, which certainly conforms with their past experiences. I see Kemp Tunkle taking pictures of beautiful models; he’s happy. Amos Smith, who has lost all his timidity, is running a charm school—line forms on the right, girls. Charlie Fulgham has a now car which all the girls are glad to hear. Here’s some good news. Doris Whitley is one of this country’s leading Home Economists. Betty Means is a research chemist, remember her chem. class? Martha Ann Ingram is giving concerts at all points on the compass. Two of the most noted contemporary artists arc Judy Parsons and Bill Goodman. Monroe Teague can do just as good a disappearing act with his wand as the atomic bomb with all its U235 can do. Sarah Laws is considered the greatest concert pianist of all time. 1 am becoming dizzy from such sights, and cannot clearly tell what is happening. I see many familiar faces but cannot tell what they are doing, though I am sure it is to the honor and glory of the beloved U. S. S. Phillips. - Harriet Bums. The Brook The brook wandered pleasantly through groves of autumn trees That stood bare-limbed imbedded in a deep crisp rug of leaves. Then quickly changed its course to pasture spaces wide And gave a cool freshness to the last of summer's grasses. It bathed the cattle wading in its shallow rocky pool. It flowed beside a highway filled with purring cars and traffic. And saw humanity traverse its common ways like magic. It ran past houses broken with their many years. And shared their wisdom many generations old: The brook flows on and on and joins with other rills That will form the river which flows out to sea. But the brook brought with it all its young vitality. It adds its zestful strength to make the mighty oceans sound and foam. If it were not for the brooks, where would the ocean be? If there were no ocean to receive the overflow. How could the brook wander pleasantly through groves of autumn trees? When I stand by the ocean, and see its splendor, might, and mystery', I think of all the little brooks that join to make the miracle— I think of all the needs of man that brooks are mindful of. —MARY WALDROP. Funny, we never noticed it before, hut . . . These first few pages, now just look at them! As straight and shrinkingly neat as if we’d used a ruler to paste the clippings: we were so afraid, at first, of doing something the least bit wrong. That was when we frist joined the Follies company, and a scared little bunch of sub-sub-understudies we were! When one of those glamorous, fourth-year stars walked by, how we envied their poise, and their daring in such matters as walking boldly up the “Down” stairs, while we tip-toed a little nervously up the Up stairs. And as for OK’s why. we couldn't have ventured out of our lockers without at least two teachers’ signatures on a slip of paper loaded down with all the facts, including the number on our elevator tickets. The thrill of exploration was ours when we investigated the room numbers on the little white cards: and we were so proud when we found the much-renowned 214 and 215 the first week, in spite of our nightmares! We were assigned lockers, and weren’t so sure we loved that bottom-locker but naturally we didn’t say anything about that . . . Sitting back in the girls’ gym. the mysteries of student government wore hardly cleared up by the gales of laughter bursting from the audience, caused by apparently—a low, indistinguishable mumble from the stage . . . And when June of 1943 came 'round, how careful we were to inform all and sundry that we were ’sophomores.” and no longer mere rats. By the second year, however, our attitude had changed. Several little incidents kept us from getting too sure of ourselves; but we had learned the knack of bouncing up the wrong side of the steps at a clip which almost guaranteed immunity from any strolling representative of law and order. Wo had also discovered that next to nobody felt the slightest interest in whethr or not we had a legal OK; and toward the last ot the year, cautious investigation showed that, if the manner in which we carried it off was right, it didn't even matter if there was anything written on the paper. We wore left to fend for ourselves for lockers, and not to lx? rude, but— we really much preferred what we got at the cost of two good fingernails and a pencil-point; it was far more likely to lx a top-locker, though why the supply had suddenly expanded, we never could learn. We did or died for our own schedules that year; and after a boring, not to mention frustrating, session with the Schedule Committee, discovered that we had come out with just al out what we would have if the school had made out the little white cards . . .Our fourth semester. Tommy Dix. of “Best Foot Forward” fame, came to the school: and every girl there wore red. or something equally eye-catching. Our third year, we were cocky and why not? We had top lockers, with mirrors, and pictures of June Allyson and Van Johnson taped inside; and we did our daily dozen around Miss Pcnruddocke’s corner without even a mollifying slip of blank paper. The entire school was being repainted, and were we glad of it! All the witty notes written on the old iKiint had gotten stale, and anyway, we'd thought up a lot of better ones. The Big Five” Junior-Senior proms were started that year; and we were irritated at having to say in November who we would be going with in January how on earth could anybody, even us. know? There was a change in the plan of registration: old classes on one day. new ones the next: and we gave expert opinions as to the varying virtues of each system, which some people listened to lower semesters at least! and which the authorities paid absolutely no attention to. although no one ever mentioned the fact. Our. sixth semester, we tackled ' Beowulf; and wore in anguish because we couudn’t seem to understand how to do discussion questions, and the test on it was nothing but that ... A group of Miss Brock’s pupils who had contributed to a common library formed a library club, the “Header’s Refuge after Miss Brock regretfully vetoed the first name ot Readers’ Refuse. The MIRROR 41 Clem Zbindcn proved he could rival Snoczy” Dennis, by sneezing his way steadily through a recorded auditorium program; and when Lola Mae Jones and Bill Achor were taken into the Honor Society in the sixth semester, we regretted briefly quite briefly not having studied more. We were so very proud when Berma Dale Kyle was elected our second associate, because she was the first of us to be a G.O. officer. April 13 was a beautifully sunny day. and the auditorium was as bright as we had ever seen it. tor the memorial service for Piesident Roosevelt, who had died the day before. We gathered in there again on May 8. for VE day. although we tnought out loud that we should have been let out of school. We came back to school in September of 1945 in a world at peace but not very much so: the News had just begun to be printed again, and most of its front page was covered with stories of more strikes. Nearly everybody had two lockers, as a matter of course; and seniors had legal privileges but not as many as wc took. There was a definite feeling, we discovered, attached to being a senior, but it may have been just the multiplied number of cards and blanks we had to fill out. . . We practically controlled the General Organization: Jimmy Smith was first associate, seventh semester, and Pat Bowers second associate. But eighth semester was the real triumph —when we elected Donna Pledger president, the fifth case of petticoat rule in the history of school! We went back an hour to Central Standard Time, from War Saving Time: and back a half-hour to the old school time; and there was an unprecedented epidemic of tardiness, until we got our systems and our alarm clocks readjusted. Even worse was when ihe bus and street car drivers went out on strike; some of us walked; some few were allowed to bring the family car: and some stayed home. We felt like leaving school when confronted with Hamlet” and a semester thesis, both in one semester, but somehow we not only stayed, but did both and lived. . . . Guy Woodliff and Harry Cook were our star orators, and went around winning contest, alter contest. As a final gesture to our public (admiring, we hoped), we gave the last act ol the Phillips Follies : Stage I oor. by FVrber and Kaufman, was our Senior Play, ns well as the last clipping pasted in our scrapbook. And a creditable production (we thought i it was. in spite of the agony of mind most of the seniors went through. But turning the last page, where we gleefully slapped down the last clipping— look! all those loose clippings we never could decide where to put . . . Defense”-then War and finally Victory Loan drives in which we always went way over the top . . . those seventh period tests made less agonizing by the melodic presence of the ROTC out one window, and the band out the other . . . HARRY GEORGE’S! . . . the football team, bounding gingerly over to East Park in their bare feet . . . Pat Bowers' tap-dancing . . . would-be cheer leaders dancing madly about at try-outs . . . those ever-lovin’ couples: Thea Burnett and Guy Woodliff; and Bottyc Joyce Smith and Emmett Wiginton ... not to mention the two famed Middlebrooks Kathryn and Christine . . . and the equally famed Alfred and Ralph Jaffe . . . and Thelma Ann Vaughan complaining loudly and bitterly that she had to go mad in every Dramatic Club play she was in! That just about finished up all our clippings loose or tied down ... A few may have slipped out of the book in four years’ time, but you remember them, and our days with the Phillips Follies. The MIRROR TALENT SCOUT SELECTIONS The MIRROR The MIRROR 66 The Grand Finale This is it! This is the ultimate conclusion for which we have rehearsed for uncounted nights and days. This is the biggest production in which we have ever starred. Let us hope that it will not be the last. The stage behind us appears flooded with light. Those before us fade into obscurity. The challenge of life sounds forth from the darkness. The test of learning beckons us- whether we can make knowledge work for us by turning it into wisdom or just let it leak out, stagnant, as it entered. Many ways are there that invite us. Many are hazardous and perilous. A few are steep and hard to climb. Others are obstYucted by obstacles. .Some require a physical endeavor; others, a mental struggle. Some are easier than others, but all are difficult, for this is life. It makes no great difference whether we choose the high road or the low road, but when we have selected our field of exploration something we really like and sincerely want to follow let us move forward determined to succeed. During this long fight for success we must at all times maintain our faith. Self-confidence is essential to our well-standing in the world of today or tomorrow or any day. We must try to do our best at all times and every succeeding time try to do a bit better. If we feel prone to doubt that we can readily fill the roles of certain leading actors of today, perhaps it would be boasting to employ as our own personal motto. “Who can do better than I? The character of friendship is bound by all the laws of nature to play a leading role in our life. The perpetual quality of friendship we must acquire if we wish to star in a leading part. Then. too. we might use this bit of philosophy-one should go one-half the way all the time and all the way cne-half the time if he can have loving and mutual friendship all the time. As the days of progress pass by and grow into weeks and months and years, we shall then become the leading actors of the stage. We shall be judged as most men are judged by our past. Title roles will be awarded to those esteemed in virtue. To get this respect from others, we must deserve it. and if we deserve it. we’ll get it. Rehearsals” will be long and tedicus, but we shall attain the goal and find success in quantity and quality undreamed of before. We shall star in i erformances witnessed by millions. Hut now at the present, preparations are being begun for the next production, even as the curtain cones down on the closing scene of our largest show in history.
