From a few of our seniors we can get an idea of what this team does in its off moments. If Fay Akins' teachers have often wondered at her absence, the answer is the University which occupies most of her time. Edwin Miles claims to study (he wouldn’t say what) in his spare moments. Betty Iglehart may be found any afternoon at Forbes listening to the latest boogie woogie. Kyle Eliott is among the more energetic of our team—his job at the Y. M. C. A. keeps him well occupied. A chief star of girls’ basketball is Barbara Minter, and at any afternoon game Marion Ponder, as referee, may be heard calling— MINTER, two points” every minute. Anything that makes life more exciting appeals to Bogie Megill, who spends his time enjoying life to its fullest degree. If you should find Marion Freeman looking tired and dejected, it is probably because she as club treasurer has had a hard time balancing the budget. Gordy Germany likes the night life of the town and enjoys “swinging out at the Pickwick to the music of the Auburn Knights. When passing by a park near Five Points, if you see a six-footer who seems out of place playing football with some younger boys, it will just be Stumpy” Watson, physical director of that branch of the Y. M. C. A. There are many off sides in football games that go by unnoticed, and so it is with seniors. Not all of them could be detected by your unobservant reporter. Mary Porter (Impy) Shook. T II E M I R R O R 23 Between the Halves The first half of the game is over. Here we sit in the grandstand of life awaiting the last half. Will it hold college, business, war—what? As with all games, no one knows the outcome until the final score. Now between halves we find ourselves watching the parade of events that have marched before us while we sat here in the high school section. Far back, just coming on the field, we see a big event—Mr. Stough’s following Mr. Going as Head Coach” at Phillips. Next we notice our first campaign speeches in auditorium which were so different from anything that we had encountered before. Along with these comes the thought of all the times we laughed at the clownings of George Harper and John A. Reynolds. We remember the fiery eloquence of Herbert Kieswetter, which thrilled us so. Next comes the pep squad which made us await the next football game with much eagerness to see their new performance. Next we hear that song which our own Mrs. Wulffaert wrote. We Love America and, last in this line, the mighty mite, Roy Johnson. Coming closer we find that Phillips won the City Basketball Championship and along at the same time appears the music festival cup. Weren't we proud! Next comes the change to a commission government at Phillips, and soon after, the senior play in which we were amused by Walter Bibby. Next, Skidmore Logan was elected the most valuable player. Well he deserved it. Just in front of the parade of past events we notice the Phillips girls knitting for the British War Relief. A pall of sorrow covers the next event—the death of Miss Chase. Next comes As You Like It , which was presented after school in our auditorium by Shakespearean actors. December 7, 1941—A date which has altered many of our plans and may change our entire lives—dominates the approaching group. Then December 8, when we all assembled in both auditoriums to listen to the President's Declaration of War. Just going off the field we notice air raid wardens, evidence of Phillips' preparedness. Wallace Cohen follows, with his stirring oratorical power which took him high in the oratorical contest. Next come the impressive Thanksgiving and Christmas Programs presented by our speech choir and glee clubs. What is that I see at the end of the field? A large groom, a small bride; why, it's Coach Walker and Mrs. Walker, nee Flautt! So ends the parade of events. Soon the team will take the field for the last half in the great game of life. May each player acquit himself well, even though it may not be granted to him to carry the ball over for the winning touchdown. —Dorothy Tyrrell. T H E M IRRO K (Hand Me) DOWNS 24 Since the whistle is about to blow ending the fourth and final quarter, we, the undersigned players on the winning team, do pass these breaks or penalties, which ever they may be deemed by the referee, on to an up-and-coming second string. These gifts are to be guarded by those upon whom they are bestowed until their final score is made. The “toss-ups are as follows: Mary Jo Chambers bestows her beautiful soprano voice upon Jack Crowe. David Newman wills his rank in R. O. T. C. to James Smith. Mary Anne Atkinson hands her red locks down to Alto Townsend and Billy Satterwhite, as we think red hair will be becoming to them for a change. Jane Harper consigns her admiration of the Boys’ Glee Club to Jean McCarty. Bill Wall endows Jeanette Estes with his ability to sell War Stamps and shortchange people. Margaret Moore bequeaths her task of checking the roll in study hall to Laura Acton. Frank Chappelle bestows his ability to brown-nose” to anybody eager to graduate in four years. Helen Cox wills her ability to get a ring, third finger, left hand, to Jane Roy. David Staff donates priority on his saddle shoes and plaid shoe strings to Jean Musgrove. ‘Toady Smith leaves her brain child. Junior, and his taking ways to anybody who has the patience to get him out of trouble. Robert Linn desires that his poetic genius be given to Mack Allison. Dorothy Tyrrell consigns her pigtaiLs to Baby Sister Norris. Carney Dobbs takes great pleasure in bestowing his various and sundry club pins upon the girl of the moment. Louise Harrison hands her bright red sweater down to Betty Carol Logan. Kyle Eliott wills his photogenic qualities to John Lanier. Evelyn Hood gives priority on her front seats in all her classes to Barbara McAdory. Billy Drenncn bequeaths his blue tie with the puppy dogs on it to anybody in Miss Gatchell's history class who forgets to wear one. June Frost desires that all the knowledge she has learned in the last four years be given to Evelyn Campbell. John Carden leaves his ability to win friends and influence teachers to Nanette Wood. Jack Keith gives his gift of gab to Doris Lovett. Elizabeth Hedgecoth bestows three rubber bands and one aluminum hair curler upon Loretta Graves. Malcolm Tanner wills his effervescent personality to Walter Byars. Margaret Adams consigns her collection of bracelets to Gloria Goodall. Stumpy Watson leaves his No. 10 shoes for little Sidney Norwood. Joe Lynch endows Ralph Tapscott with his amazing ability to answer questions in history. Marion Snow bequeaths her love of Auburn and of the Pi K A’s to Barbara Houser. B. W. McNair refuses to will anything, but he will auction his Hamlet test paper off to the highest bidder. T H E M I H K O H 25 Joel Gochenour tosses his crew cut up to Tommy Noe. Wilma Dean Mayton will gladly give her beloved (?) bottom locker to Odessa Flowers. Gordy Germany, Robert Baker, and Hubert Cates will their long-standing friendship to Axel Bolvig and Billy Ward. Aleck Gulas bestows his beautiful R. O. T. C. saber (with the dull edge) on Tommy Parks. Impy” Shook hands down her ability to knit in class without, being caught to Suzanne Beall. Now the whistle has blown, ending the game. May those upon whom these gifts have been bestowed win through to be All-Americans. —Margaret Bay less. When Moon and Stars Shine Again While the moon duskily casts her glow On the troubled scene below. A lustrous star gleams on high— Black velvet and gold star in the sky. Beauty, magic, in poignant delight, Comes to star-dusted, moon-lighted night. Can there be a free man on land or sea Who does not believe the star's augury? Then suddenly I turn in wild dismay. Fearing disaster from gold-streaming ray; A well-lighted dome means bombs from the sky. A night in a tunnel—and a low-wailing cry. When planes with venom their fires spit, And on moon-hallowed cottage make perilous hit. The craze-driven pilot laughs with glee At the fiendish sights the morrow will see. As frenzy and terror hold pitiless reign, Thousands mourn the wounded and slain— A well-lighted night—no horror worse Than beauty disfigured and made a curse. But I know firmly and feel full deep That free men can halt destruction’s sweep By each exerting the free man’s right To wage a strong, victorious fight— And win so surely that each future year Will hold wide peace without tremor or fear; Then moon and gold star with radiant light Will again bring beauty to the night. We have spent four years (more or less) conquering a fierce and fighting foe, studies, but we have won the laurels of victory, our diplomas. We have all found some particularly tough opponents on the opposing team. Perhaps math or science threatened not to let us break through for a touchdown, or then again history, Latin, English, or some other subject kept some of us from kicking that extra point, but now we reap the fruits of a vanquisher; we are graduating. Yes, this is how we now feel, but what of the future? Is the game over and won, or is this merely a step in the rough and hard-fought game of Life? Some will continue in the field of education, striving in college to prepare themselves for a future in teaching, law, medicine, business administration, engineering or in the various other courses. This is not their final score! Some will enter the business field immediately as clerks, stenographers, typists, and at other jobs; new tasks and challenges will face these. This is not their final score! The armed forces also await some members of our team. There will be adaptation to different physical and mental situations by these, and each will have much to learn in the military manner. This is not their final score! Others will enter industrial plants and take various other jobs: they will have to learn much of their new surroundings and tasks. This is not their final score! No. none of us has reached his goal. Though we have won a pennant in the minor league, there is a major league left to challenge us. We realize that although the going may be tough, we will have something to keep up our morale which will never leave us the Phillipian Spirit. Our background will lead us to defend, in the manner we are best fitted, the heritage and name of Phillips High School. —Carney Dobbs. CHEEKING SECTION AH eyes have been centered on the great team performing on the field, but now we call your attention to the cheering section, the “team behind the team. T II E 31 I R R O R 40 Sportscast Ladies and gentlemen, it has been a great game! Excitement, spectacular plays, and two thousand seven hundred students cheering this great team on to victory. We have had a wonderful season, each quarter thrill-packed. Every compliment that could be bestowed is being given to this undefeated, untied, and unscored-upon team. These students have done their best in this their last era of football glory. This final victory completes the four year record of these unconquered players. Each hat is off and a cheer is sent up for every member of this team. While we have a few minutes left on the air, I should like to give you some great predictions for these All-American players. First of all I salute the boys who are to go into the armed forces. I see Admiral John Nelson Hassell of the Navy, Lieutenant Colonel Gordy Germany, and Colonel William Sloan of the Army Air Force enjoying a vacation on the Phillipine Islands. Major Joel Gochenour of the Signal Corps is stationed in the South Sea Islands. Bill Wall and Tom Whitley, engineers from Auburn, are building a canal across Mexico. Their physicians on the expedition are Dr. Homer Russell and Dr. Robert Joseph Linn, both of whom studied at the Mayo Clinic. Marion Ponder, noted dietitian of Chicago, is being honored at a national conference. Girod Cole is a famous and revered minister. Madeline Ward, executive of the Birmingham Stock Exchange, is touring the post-war world with her business friends, Barbara Maxson and Elizabeth Hedgecoth. Dorothy Tyrrell is first vice-president in charge of production at the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, having begun as a welder there during the war. Helen Cox is her invaluable assistant. News editor of the Chicago Tribune, Carney Hoyt Dobbs, gave Impy Shook her start in the movies where she is now a famous star, also appearing on television. Margaret Bayless, society editor of the New York Times, continues Lula Lovelorn’s advice to a nation-wide public. Kyle Eliott and Malcolm Tanner are top flight radio announcers, being chosen invariably for all the big games. Thus I forecast for the members of this winning team an illustrious future in other big games”. Of course. I have had time to give you only a few of the predictions sports writers have made for them. Here are some ordered to be preserved for the duration in the permanent records of the Fort. ★ ★ ★ The rocking winds pipe high and wild. A sweet, shrill music, clear and mild. And trilling sound of violins. Ascending sharply o’er the din. The cellos stir in gruff reproof At the gently creaking forest roof. The trombones murmur wearily. The flutes reply with ecstacy. Then, with vigor, trumpets blare. A brazen music fills the air. The thunder rumbles, tubas croak. Tre woodwinds sing amongst the oaks. A lightning flash — and cymbals clash, The sky-sheep madly homeward dash. The frightened oak leaves flurry down, Upon the plain’s green mossy ground. The xylophones announce the rain. Falling gently on the plain. The drums take up a steady beat. And all in heavy accent meet. Wild and high the storm notes rise. The Pipes of Pan their tone belies In one great mounting theme of fright. The eerie music haunts the night. Suddenly, clear and sweet again. The music ceases with the rain, The trumpets mute, the woodwinds cease. The heavenly symphony plays peace. Heaven sweeps the clouds away From this fickle April day. The stars shine out with clear blue light. The storm flees into the night. David Vess. T II K M I K R O R 38 G. I. T II E 1 IKRO R 40 Military Secrets Once again we come to commencement exercises at Fort P. H. S. when all graduating members of Officers Candidate School will take their places in various branches of the service. It has been a long, hard road from rookie to lieutenant, for Training School is no cinch, but these two hundred seventy-five graduates have made the grade. Spurred on by two thousand six-hundred noncommissioned officers, this class feels better equipped to meet bigger things and more serious difficulties in the future with greater ease. No more does the shadow of a guard house loom before their unsuspecting eyes. Ugly thoughts of K. P. duty are forever barred from their minds We have seen great work in this class and the members are due every congratulation possible for their outstanding records. They have earned all just praise for his final step, completion of four years of unceasing study, as we salute them and spur them on to greater victories, higher glories. I have had the opportunity of looking into the secret files of this class which revealed future ambitions and probable plans in times to come. As these graduates go forth into advanced and specialized training we see many changes and great possibilities for success in the world. First. I see Lieutenant Colonel Roy Ratliff of the Armored Division with his able aides. Major Ed Addison and Captain Jon Shepard, leading a tank column against the enemy in Europe. Famous Army Engineer. Tommy Noe. has just completed plans of a new road for advancement of Red Cross supplies in this section to be brought in by Nurses Dorothy Brown and Kitty Elliott. Lieutenants Jackie Dixon and Fuzzy Samples of the Air Corps recently made a most successful night attack against Tokyo in a bomber designed by Tom Reese, after which Jack Crowe, company bugler, played Hirohito's funeral march. Admiral Sarah Ellen Glenn of the W.A.V.E.S. has broken the army tradition and gone into the navy, but consistent Nanette Wood feels that an Army General is enough for her. Bettye McCracken and Dorothy Allen. Army entertainers and dancers, are making a tour of U. S. camps while Fleta Montgomery continues to keep up R. A. F. morale. Loretta Graves is making great headway in a nation-wide bond drive to sponsor the final blow against the Axis this spring. Grand opera star. Vivien Barnes, opens this season’s performances with ‘'Aida . Holman Weed is to give a piano concert at Carnegie Ilall. Dorothy Phillips is now playing first violin in the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, whereas Maurice Cham-blee, concert tenor, may be heard any morning over a nation-wide radio hookup advertising David Jenkin’s new invention, the mechanical brain. In the sports world, I see Herbert Hamilton, distance runner, winning out in the Olympic finals with Ralph Harris taking his share of the honors for the United States. National tennis champion Robert C. Brown is taking up short story writing as a pastime. Bill Reynolds, All-American fullback for Notre Dame, has brought his team through an undefeated, untied, unscored-upon season of football. T II Ii M I K l O R 41 Sara Hawthorne, noted librarian, is I he newly appointed head of the Congressional Library in Washington. D. C. John Carr has won recognition far and wide for his skilled talent in poetry writing, and is considered the top ranking poet of America. Frances Drennen is a renowned journalist, having published articles in all the leading newspapers and magazines throughout the country, while Mama Bromberg is making quite a success of housekeeping. Harold Kincaid's extensive art collection is known to be the largest in the world, while Marjorie Kilgore has won several first prizes for her own work in national art exhibits. In the theater world we find that Zelda Thompson, dramatic actress of stage and screen fame, is featured on Broadway this week in a play which is sure to be there for a long run. David Vess. the great lover of the motion picture screen, is running a close race with Russell Adams, celebrated comedian, for No. 1 fan-mail receiver. The scholars of the day include Betty Feingold, a Ph.D. from Harvard, which recently went co-ed far Phillips graduates. Constance Puls is a Spanish professor at the University of Havana, while Kitty Jenkins is on the teaching staff at Duke. Billy Isreal has fallen into the toothpaste millions by marrying the rich heiress in Miami. That top flight radio announcer and news commentator. Don Hurlbert, runs an alligator farm on the side, and Joe Ezell’s new studio for ballroom dancing has become known throughout the South. Lil Culp, stenographer for Ford Motor Company, has made amazing progress since she left Phillips, and Virginia Abel is holding a responsible secretarial position for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Mack Allison has finally created his dream world after reading “Islandia” for the twenty six hundred and ninety-eighth time. Betty Dominick and Ernestine Meharg are employees of Uncle Sam. They have the exclusive rights of Army dress designing and run a shop on Fifth Avenue. New York. Gwen Fulgham is an expert hairdresser specializing in dyeing hair. In the same profession is Frederick Evans who. being moved by his own artistic ability, became a beauty operator. Mary Ruth Hathome and Elizabeth Hansen have opened a charm school to inspire others to follow in their own footsteps. Eugene Fulgham is a favorite lecturer to this group, having made numerous talks on poise, manners, and the art of being beautiful. Thus I have revealed a few military secrets of these unusual officers. Of course these prophecies barely touch upon the wide store of talent and skill in this class, so, until these members graduate from specialist training schools, I say good bye and good luck to the best set of Second Lieutenants Fort P. Isn’t it queer how through the years, in spite of all our boning, we frequently found ourselves in a cock pit fog (1) on test day? If we doped off (2) too many times, at the end of the semester we could be heard carping (3) because we hadn’t made the grade. Remember how daring you felt when you went A.W.O.L. that time? However, the ever vigilant M. P.'s made such stunts few and far between, to say nothing of the danger of getting a gig (4) on our records, or even a bob tail (5 ! The brightest spot in our day was the chow call. Wish I had a nickel for every recruit who was trampled in the rush to mess hall. At Thanksgiving and Christmas we were treated to oversized albatross (6). We may be getting out of O. C. S. just in time to escape having armored cow (7). who knows? Still, chow hounds that we are, that would probably be devoured as quickly as Barbers' now, and we certainly wouldn’t break as many bottles! When we ever did try straying from the straight and narrow, little carrier pigeons from the top kicks would be sure to arrive at our barracks with a summons to report to their tent. If the matter was about that reconnaissance tour in which we were caught out of bounds, having obtained a pass to our diddie bag (8) and detoured to see that blonde bomber in 333, we were I. C. (9) Uncle Sam's Party (10) wasn’t so satisfactory if we had received too many overnight passes for dances, or week-end ones to follow our team to Ft. Gadsden and the like. When we were going to a big dance, we were rather wan.- of blind flying (II). but sometimes, for a minor affair, we would try someone else's friend. Usually the girls had rather the boys went on their own skirt patrol (12). Remember those Mother McCreas (13) we could hand the sergeants when really all we wanted was a snore sack (14) so we could spin in? (15). The instructors were pretty good sports not to blow their tops (16) with us many millions of times more than they did. Once in a while we were just too dumb for them, and the end of the semester found us busted (17) below our classmates.
