Many long hours went into Philip's l966 WESTPAC cruise, and UV I r ,w A . I many long hours also went into Philip's l966 WESTPAC cruisebook. I only hope that these hours prove well spent and that this book can serve as a record and reminder of the good times and the weary times that occurred over this five and a half month period. A few events occurred that were sobering to the whole crew, the loss of our shipmate D. E. Smock, Seaman Apprentice, being the greatest of these. The injuries to LTJG Charles Bassford, Donald Scott, RD2, and Vance Alquist, SN, made all of us pause at Thanksgiving and reflect upon all we have to be thankful for, and grateful that more were not hurt. There were also the good times though, and perhaps this book can serve as a reminder of those times too. How many can forget the taste of a cold beer during a hot baseball game between the officers and crew in Kaohsiung, or the HBeetle Bandsn of Subic Bay? Who can forget the mystery and beauty of the Tiger Balm Gardens in Hong Kong, or the fun of shopping at the China Fleet Club? And most of all, who can forget the thrill and the pride of coming into Pearl Harbor with a huge red and white lei on our bow, and seeing our loved ones waiting eagerly for us? Perhaps in the years to come we can all sit down with our families and reminisce and tell of the cruise of l966, and this book may be able to bring back a few of those memories. To those who have already departed the ship for other duty and to those about to depart I wish the best of luck and to all I say, UIt was a pleasure serving with you!H Ensign Richard L. Repasky, USN l966 Cruisebook Editor
