The new department was planned to give the student the satisfaction and enjoyment of working in efficient and attractive home-like surroundings. In order to teach practical homemaking it was necessary to modernize the department to give it an atmosphere more conducive to meet the homemaking problems of every day life. Happy homes make a stronger community. In this way students may learn to huild sounder personalities, to understand hetter the duties of managing their own homes, and to develop a more cooperative attitude for community life. The hest available household equipment has been installed. Our living area, laundry, kitchens and clothing room have heen equipped to further aid in the development of those skills which the students will use in the future. ,-., 5 is Left to RightkMr, Schreffler, Mr, Siniler, Mrs. France, Mr, Branstctter, Mr. Lux. STUDENT TEACHERS -lack Nlattern, john Freeman, Agnes Zavalyclriga, Elias Kudrielc, james McCall endow 670155 akfdlfory WVhen we entered Philipsburg High School as Sophomores, we were highly confident of our own abilities and strove to impress the upper- classmen. Before many weeks had passed our feeling of confidence changed to one of humble- ness, and we immediately doffed our arrogant airs. At our first class meeting, we elected the following officers: President, Bill Pleskonko, Vice President, Bob Shoff, Secretary, Janet Kerr, Treasurer, Ed Maclay. During our Hrst year we were very well represented in music, athletics and dramatics. Our Iunior year was much more successful than the previous one. We were better ac- quainted with the school, its faculty members and our fellow students. Our officers for the year were as follows: President, Bill Miller, Vice President, Harry Carroll, Secretary, JoAnn Kell- ey, Treasurer, Cleo Goss. This was our year to gain some special recognition. Several of our musical members were beginning to show their abilities and were rewarded by having the op- portunity to attend District Orchestra, Chorus and Band. Our athletic accomplishments, writ- ing skills and speaking abilities began to display themselves in various forms. These experiences were only to prepare us for the responsibilities and privileges that we gained as seniors. The leaders in our eventful senior year were President, Bill Miller, Vice President, Sally France, Secretary, Shirley Baumgardner, Trea- surer, Marcia WVilliams. In the anticipation of such outstanding events as the Prom, the Wash- ington trip and the Senior banquet, we failed to realize the passing of time which was bringing us closer to our final activity as a class Com- mencement. ln our three years in high school, we have learned to appreciate a great many of the real values of life. But most important of all, we have gained new friends and a world of exper- ience, which we shall never forget. XVe hope to continue in life just as successfully as we spent our greatest period of life, our days in dear old P.H.S. enior WOMALA Most Popular Shelia Selhst Harry Carroll Most Talented Shelia Selbst Harry Carroll Phyllis Druggs Best Dressed Bill Chaplin Sally France Sidney Ziff Most Humorous Don Husler Phyllis Ross Best Looking Sidney Ziff Shirley Voyzcy Most Likely To Succeed Harry Carroll Join Hazelton Most Athletic Harry Carroll Teddy Johnston Most Pleasing Personality Bob Shoff Shelia Sclbst 28 , 115 Posing Yclnm Don Your Easter lionnvl just rvstiug Coocl Old SllllIllIC1'fllllL' 9. The starting line-up was 3 5U1fliC0llCgC 4 composed of mostly seniors, leaving only a few If Bdlfffmu' 9 experienced players for the coming year. The lg 12 complete record of the Forty-ninersv is as q'3l,.5rgt.1d 3 follows: S Om-ola 0 Dick Brown, Steve Dcinchak, George Clap, Mr. Grundy, Mike Deinchak, George Sura QW For the first time in the history of P.H.S., there has been a golf team that played an opposing team. The opponents were the Little Lions of State College. Managed by Mr. Grundy, the P.H.S. team journeyed to State to defeat the Little Lions by a lllfz to 316 margin. This was the first time that State had lost a match on its home course. Just a few days later State visited the local links only to be defeated again bv the same margin. Four boys were entered in the dis- trict tournament which proved to be very successful for P.H.S. Two of the four boys, George Czap and Steve Demchalc, won second and fourth places in the districts. This win for the two boys placed them in the State Tournament a week later. George came through for P.H.S. with second place, with Steve placing further down the line. District and state tournaments are held at the Pennsylvania State College course.
