OFFICERS Captain Elwin L. Farrington pubi ated , USN .2 ,fd gy X . f X, f nf' , . Q 5 had Captain Elwin L. Farrington was born in Cabot, Vermont, in 1907. In 1931, he was graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy. His assignments in the Navy began with the USS MARYLAND. He then spent a year on Ie liidestroyers. In 1933, he began his Hight training at Pensacola, Florida. He was appointed Naval Aviator in 3aliOctober of 1934. From here it was a VF Squadron, followed by four years in Patrol Squadrons in Alaska and C FlEiHawaii, then to NAS, Corpus Christi, Texas. A years' service with Western Sea Frontier followed. In 1943, he 'ndiwas promoted to Commander, and took command of VP 91, which took part in South Pacific anti-sub and rescue left fiwork. In 1945, while Executive Officer of the USS CHENENGO, he participated in the Philippine and Okinawa P'38l'Campaigns, and also the occupation of Japan. It was during this period that he was awarded the Navy-Marine 70m llCorps Medal. From 1947 to 1949, he was the Executive Officer of NAS, Alameda. In 1949 he was the f',h. Operations Oflicer for Staff, COMCARDIV THREE, USS BOXER. He was Director of Operations for Pacific Divi- sion, MATS from 1950-1951, the year he was appointed Captain. Since that time, Captain Farrington has served as Head of Air Training Branch, CNO, as Commanding Officer, USS DUXBURY BAY, and was a student at INDUSTRIAL WAR COLLEGE until 13 August 1955, when he assumed command of the USS PHILIPPINE SEA, having relieved Captain Herman L. Ray, USN. Other than the awards mentioned before, Captain Far- rington has also earned the Navy Unit Citation, American Defense Ribbon, Pacific Area Ribbon Qwith four starsj, WW-II Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

RAY, USN was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi on 12 December 1907. He attendtpd Pgbllo school in Pontotoc in preparation for his appointment to the U. S. Naval Academy where he was gra uate din 1929. He was awarded his wings as a naval aviator in 1931 at Pensacola, Florida. Captam RAY l1HS 113 H wide variety of assignments in both surface ships and aviation squadrons. . At the outbreak of World War II he was Executive Officer of Patrol Squadron 43 operating off the West Coast. Commencing in June 1943, he served in the Aviation Plans Division .of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air, until assigned as Staff Air Officer to Commander, Amphibious Forces, U- S- P30150 F1991- Following the war's end, Captain RAY served in the Manila Bay area as Chief of Staff to Commanderg Philippine Sea Frontier and Commander Fleet Air Wing 10, and later was Chief of Staff to Commander, Fleet Air Wing 4 at NAS, Whigby Island, Washington. His second command was the USS DUXBUHY BAY QAVP-381, a seaplane tender, which made an interesting cruise visiting numerous Persian Gulf ports while enroute fr0II1 the West to East Coast via the Suez Canal. This duty concluded, he returned to the Aviation Plans Division for two years, followed by a years duty at the Naval War College, Newport, 11110116 ISl2l11d- In 1952 Captain RAY was assigned command of the USS BADOENG STRAIT CCVE-116j which deployed to the Far East and Korea performing close air support with a Marine Attack Squadron embarked. The following year, he became Chief of Staff to Commander, Carrier Division 15, a command concerned primarily with fleet anti-submarine warfare. On 24 August 1954, he assumed command of the USS PHILIPPINE SEA QCVA-47j in Manila Bay. Captain RAY's major decorations are the Distin- guished Flying Cross and the Navy Unit Citation. In 1937 he was graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy, and was designated as an aviator in 1941. Commander Whistler's Naval career began on the USS WEST VIRGINIA, right after his graduation from the Academy. From the WEST VIRGINIA he went to the USS RALPH TALBO, USS CASSIN, NAS, Pensacola, and NAS, Banana River. In the latter part of 1941, he was assigned to VP-32 at Coco Solo, Canal Zone. He commanded the squadron from August 1943 to July 1945. His next duty was as Executive Officer on the USS MARCUS ISLAND, and in 1946 he assumed command of that ship. Commander Whistler then returned to the Naval Academy for study in Marine Engineering and Aviation. In 1949, he attended the Air Command and Staff School. During 1950 and 1952, he was attached to Fleet Air Wing FOUR, first as Training Officer and later as Operations Officer. Commander Whistler was then assigned as Chief Staff Officer for Naval Air Bases in the Fifth Naval District. He remained there until October of 1954, when he reported aboard the USS PHILIPPINE SEA for duty as Executive Officer. Among the many awards received during his Naval career are: World War II Victory, American Area, Asiatic Pacific, American Defense, and the Navy Unit Citation, which he received while with VP-32 in 1943. I Commander Whistler is married to the former Miss Ruth Alta Simpson of Annapolis, Maryland. They have two sons: Jack C. Jr. and Bruce. The Whistlers are now living in Coronado, California.
