RAY, USN was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi on 12 December 1907. He attendtpd Pgbllo school in Pontotoc in preparation for his appointment to the U. S. Naval Academy where he was gra uate din 1929. He was awarded his wings as a naval aviator in 1931 at Pensacola, Florida. Captam RAY l1HS 113 H wide variety of assignments in both surface ships and aviation squadrons. . At the outbreak of World War II he was Executive Officer of Patrol Squadron 43 operating off the West Coast. Commencing in June 1943, he served in the Aviation Plans Division .of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air, until assigned as Staff Air Officer to Commander, Amphibious Forces, U- S- P30150 F1991- Following the war's end, Captain RAY served in the Manila Bay area as Chief of Staff to Commanderg Philippine Sea Frontier and Commander Fleet Air Wing 10, and later was Chief of Staff to Commander, Fleet Air Wing 4 at NAS, Whigby Island, Washington. His second command was the USS DUXBUHY BAY QAVP-381, a seaplane tender, which made an interesting cruise visiting numerous Persian Gulf ports while enroute fr0II1 the West to East Coast via the Suez Canal. This duty concluded, he returned to the Aviation Plans Division for two years, followed by a years duty at the Naval War College, Newport, 11110116 ISl2l11d- In 1952 Captain RAY was assigned command of the USS BADOENG STRAIT CCVE-116j which deployed to the Far East and Korea performing close air support with a Marine Attack Squadron embarked. The following year, he became Chief of Staff to Commander, Carrier Division 15, a command concerned primarily with fleet anti-submarine warfare. On 24 August 1954, he assumed command of the USS PHILIPPINE SEA QCVA-47j in Manila Bay. Captain RAY's major decorations are the Distin- guished Flying Cross and the Navy Unit Citation.
