5 SEPTEMBER 1945 . . . A sleek, new Essex class carrier was launched at the Bethle- hem Steel Corporation's shipyard and christened USS PHILIPPINE SEA. Although construction was completed too late to participate in World War II, the years it following completion were devoted to many noteworthy and outstanding accomplishments. 29 JANUARY 1947 . . . Rear Admiral Byrd and his party were flown from the ship to begin a historic exploration of Little America. Upon completion of this assign- ment, the PHILIPPINE SEA was ordered to join Vice Admiral Forrest Sherman's Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. The PHILIPPINE SEA sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, passed thro',h the Panama Canal on 51 May 1950, and later arrived at San Diego as an addition to the Pacific Fleet.
