The striking power of the ship and its Aegis Weapon System are symbolized by the trident's three prongs which stand for air, surface, and sub- surface warfare capabilities. The stylized sun in the base is taken from the Philippine P flag and reflects the location of the World War ll battle. The World War ll American victoiy at the Battle of the Philippine Sea is remembered as the Marianas Turkey Shoot. Over eighty percent of enemy forces were destroyed at little cost to friendly forces. During Desert Storm the ship fired ten Tomahawk cruise missiles and boarded many merchant ve The USS PHILIPPINE SEA CCG 585 was commissioned in March 1989 and is homeported in Mayport, Florida. ' a I during coalition actions against Iraq. For its service, PHILIPPINE SEA received the Navy Unit Commendation, Southwest Asia Service Medal and the Kuwait Liberation Medal. While deployed, the ship transited the Suez Can times and visited Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, returning home in the spring of 1991. earning the Joint Meritorious Unit Award In May 1992 PHILIPPINE SEA sailed again to the Mediterranean and Seas While deployed the ship made two Suez Canal transits and boarded thirty nine vessels In support of Uni Nations sanctions against Iraq earning a second Southwest Asia Service Medal. PHILIPPINE SEA deployed with the ENTERPRISE Battle Group in the summer of 1996, to the Mediterranean a Adriatic Seas supporting UN operations in the former Yugoslavia and conducting multi-national exercises with se other countries as part of NATO's Partnership For Peace program. Along with USS ENTERPRISE lCVN 655 Battle Group, PHILIPPINE SEA took part in a Sink Exercise QSINKEXI August 9, 1998, near Puerto Rico, sinking a decommissioned cruiser, the former USS RICHMOND K. TURNER 207. The ship then deployed again with the USS ENTERPRISE QCVN 655 Battle Group for a period of six-month November 1998. On March 24, 1999, PHILIPPINE SEA started supporting the NATO Operation ALLIED FORCE by launching Tome cruise missiles against military targets in Yugoslavia. In May 1999, PHILIPPINE SEA returned home to Naval Station Mayport. He was commissioned out of Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps where he received a Bachelor of Arts I Degree in History from Memphis State University in August 1992. He is a 2006 Distinguished Graduate of the War College where he obtained a Master's degree in National Security Affairs and Strategic Studies. k r 1 During his iniiiai sea tour he was the communications officer for uss ENGLAND too 223 from April 1993 to 1994. His next assignment was in USS PAUL HAMILTON CDDG 605 as First Lieutenant, Ordnance Officer, Strike Officer, and Weapons Officer from January 1994 to November 1997. His first Department Head tour was as Combatilgwf System Officer in USS OBANNON CDD 9865 from Oct 2000 to April 2002. His follow on tour was as Operations for Destroyer Squadron Six. His follow-on sea assignment was as Scheduler Strike Officer and Maritime Operations' Officer for Carrier Strike Group Twelve from January 2004 to April 2005. Q- Lieutenant Commander McDaniel's shore duty assignments include Officer Manpower Requirements Analyst at the -CLJ Naval Manpower Analysis Center from 1997 to 1999 and a student of the Naval War College from 2005 to 2006. 'They have family events, fundraisers, and Family Nights Out. They are here to help our families I hrough the everyday struggles of ship life. They encourage wives, husbands, significant others, ,. parents and other relatives to get involved and to help with the morale of our families and our sailors. ,Their main goal is to take care of one another... and to make the challenges of life at sea a little ieasier on the families... together. lQ Before and during deployment, the FSG had many different functions and activities. They had amlly nights at Chick-fil-a, a family bowling night, arts and crafts day for the sailors to receive cards -fand painting's thanking them for their service, and numerous FSG fundraisers to raise money to fund ,the Homecoming celebration.
