PHILIPPINE SEA represents the epitome of zur nation's commitment to sea power. Com- xrised of the world's most sophisticated and affective air, surface and subsurface defense sys- ems in the world, PHILIPPINE SEA and her crew are fully ready to be Champions of freedom . he ship's name, PHILIPPINE SEA, commemo? rates the U.S. Navy's victory in the Battle of Philippine Sea during World War II. The Battle of the Philippine Sea was fought off the Mariana Islands in June 1944. Under the Command of Admiral Raymond Spruance and Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher, U.S. Naval forces destroyed over 400 Japanese planes and 5 aircraft carriers. This victory enabled U.S. forces to secure the Mariana Islands. The only other U.S. Navy ship to bear the name PHILIPPINE SEA was CV-47.
