The Battle of the Philippine Sea was fought off the Mariana Islands in June 1944. Under the Command of Admiral Raymond Spruance and Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher, U.S. Naval forces destroyed over 400 Japanese planes and 5 aircraft carriers. This victory enabled U.S. forces to secure the Mariana Islands. The only other U.S. Navy ship to bear the name PHILIPPINE SEA was CV-47.
