DEPART E T Th f' t air detachment embarked aboard the USS Philippine Sea e 1rs was HSL-46 Det Seven from NAS Mayport. Dveytachment Seven was ' ' ' G. S ll established in November 1989, with LCDR a ter cu as it's first Officer-in-charge. LCDR Scull leads a department of five offi- cers and fifteen enlisted personnel, along with the responsibility of operating and maintaining two SH60B Seahawk helicopters. LCDR Scull was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 15, 1955. He was commissioned an Ensign in May 1977, through the NROTC program from Texas A 8z M University, where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management. Following his designation as a Naval Aviator in September 1978, LCDR Scull attended LAMPS MK I Fleet Replacement Pilot training at HSL-30 where he flew the SH-2F Sea Sprite helicopter. Following HSL-30, LCDR Scull was then attached to HSL-36 where he was assigned the jobs of Assistant Training Officer, Quality Assurance Officer, and Officer-in-charge. LCDR Scull was then selected to at- tend the Naval Postgraduate School where he received a Master of Science Degree in Financial Management in December 1983. He then attended LAMPS MK III Fleet Replacement Pilot Training at HSLf41 for the SH60B Seahawk helicopter. Following SHL-41, LCDR Scull was attached to HSL-42 where he was assigned the jobs of Natops Officer, Aviation Safety Officer, Detachment Maintenance Officer, and Officer-in-charge. In October 1986, LCDR Scull report- ed to Washington D.C. where he was assigned to the personal policy division QOP-135. Upon transfer in December 1988, LCDR Scull re- ported to HSL-40 for LAMPS MK III Refresher Training. In May 1989, he reported to HSL-46 as the Squadron Maintenance Officer until he was called upon to form Detachment Seven for the USS Philippine Sea. f X. W- .. ------- S . The DET SEVEN Warhawk fly and maintain the Philippine Sea's two SH60B helicopters, Cutlass 471 and 47 2 . Along with the pilots a variety of enlisted ratings are required to keep the helicopters airborne. Among those are AD's, AE's, AM's, AT's, AW's, AX's, and an AZ. The SH60B SEAHAWK is the Navy's best defense in Anti-Submarine Warfare QASWD, Anti-Ship Surveillance and Targeting QASSTD and Search And Rescue CSARJ. Additionally, the SH60B can perform Medical Evacuations QMEDEVACJ, Vertical Replentishment QVERTREPJ, Passenger Transfers QPAXX, Naval Gunfire Spotting QNGFSD, and Communications Relay QCOMRELB. On 16 JAN 1990, the Warhawks embarked aboard the Philippine Sea for the first time for Week One work-ups. This was the start of the Air Department . Since 16 JAN 1990, the Warhawks have flown 425 mishap free sorties for a total of 1320 underway hours. When the pilots and AW's weren't flying, the maintainers were busy keeping both aircraft in an UP status. During the deployment the detachment flew over 414 sorties for 1308 flight hours and completed 9 phase inspection maintaining a 9596 Full Mission Capable rate. While aboard the Philippine Sea, the Warhawks participated in operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and NATO exercise Display Determination. During Desert Shield and Desert Storm the Warhawks flew over 1000 flight hours, performing Anti-Ship Surveillance and Targeting, identifying over 1100 contacts. The Warhawks flew surveillance during boarding and search inspections for the Philippine Sea and many other multi- national ships participating in Maritime Interdiction Operations. During I-H-lllwlllllillllv Display Determination the Warhawks flew over 100 ASW hours with 15 simulated submarine attacks. The Warhawks have established themselves among the top with an exceptional flying and reliability record. They have set the standard for all future LAMPS 0 detachments that embark aboard Philippine Sea. CUTLASS 471 sits turning on deck awaiting a green deck. N
