The ability to fight in a multi-warfare environment, simultaneously ti 7 LCDR Brian Tollefson Combat Systems Officer engagin hostile air surface and S Y S M S g 9 9 subsurface contacts, while conducting long range strikes with Tomahawk land attack missiles is unique to the Aegis Cruiser. The men of PHILIPPINE SEA's Combat Systems department set her apart from all others in the class. Of all the ships deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm, only PHILIPPINE SEA made the entire deployment without a single mission-degrading combat systems casualty. This superior achievement is a reflection of the dedication, pride, and skill of these surface warriors. The specific accomplishments were too numerous to list them all, but some stand out: The accurate gunnery needed for .50 caliber and 5' 54 warning shots, stopping two merchant ships trying to run the U.N. authorized embargo of Iraq. The un-alerted detection and tracking of a Soviet sub in the Med. The relentless pursuit of the best possible SPY-1A performance in the tough environment of the Red Sea. The hundreds of Marsgrams and Mars calls during the early stage of Desert Shield. The safe, efficient Tomahawk missile loads in Augusta Bay and Jeddah. The long hours of painstaking, careful maintenance to keep the systems combat ready all the time. The men of the Combat Systems department produced combat readiness and contributed significantly to Operation Desert Storm. Because of their efforts, PHILIPPINE SEA put ordnance on target, on time.
