MKIISS IIBUVILIEQS fM1lESSA'l5IE April 21, 1932. DEAR GIRLS! Four years ago there were many beckoning visions on your horizon. There were the grand andrawe-inspiring seniors into whose image you might grow 5 there were the front seats in the assembly room to which you might fall heir 5 and there were many other seemingly almost unattainable goals. Most of the dreams have become realities and yesterday's horizon is today's back- ground. Somewhere in the middl.e of your high school course you saw an infinitesimal spot on the horizon and that spot was called the new buildingf' Occasionally, you may have feared that it was a mirage that would disappear, but steadily, if slowly, it has taken definite fO1'111 and now is prominently in the foreground of your view. Until we move into the new building, it will hold that place. Then, gradually it will sink into the background and no longer be an object about which to speculate. You, as alumnae, also will become background for the pupils in the school just as the older graduates form a background for you. That is a privilege, a responsibility and a challenge, to which I am sure you will live up. 1 Sincerely yours, MARY ANNE BOYLE. f Page Eleven a' ,' I - -' 4 , 1 4 I' , . '. J' I

ID ID IES II ID IE N195 MK lESSA'l3 IE DEAR GIRLS : i In the fifth book of the Aeneid,', the story' is told of the most sensational archery contest in all literature. There were four entries: Hyrtacus, Mnestheus, Eurytion and Acestes. The target was to be the mast of a ship in the harbor, or a dove fastened to the masthead. The first contestant, Hyrtacus, chose the mast, and with his first arrow split the very heart of it. The spectators felt that no other archer could equal this feat. Then Mnestheus chose the dove, but rather than aim at the manacled bird, he shot at the fine thread which bound it, severed this cleanly, and the captive imme- diately flew into the sky. Eurytion, raising his taut' bow, shot at the loosened dove, piercing her amid the very clouds. Then Acestes, feeling he had no chance for the prize, as there were no more targets, forgot the audience, forgot all earthly contacts and raised his bow to shoot for the gods. Drawing his arrow he launched the shaft into the Ulympian blue where dwelled his god. The' arrow, speeding through the sky, burst into Hame, and as a shootingistari, left behind it a stream of light. And Aeneas placed the laurel upon the brow of Acestes. For had he not caught the divine fire of Ulympus? Vffe as a class have aimed at the blue. Qur eyes are on the far distant horizon, while our hearts eagerly' seek the inhnite. Eventually, our shafts too will reach the heights. Faithfully yours, CECELIA R. LEDIGER. Page Tlzirtecn
