This housed the Phelps Union and Classical School, which was first organized in 1889. Then. in 1959, the remainder of the high school was built when thirteen small rural districts merged with P.U. C. S. to form the Phelps Central School. Some ofthe new additions were the gymnasium, the home eco- nomics rooms, the art and the commercial rooms, and new lockers - all of which we now take for granted. Kindergarten was taught for the first time. This building housed grades kindergarten through twelve until in 1951, the former playground was used as building space for grades kindergarten through three. In 1956, with the addition ofgrades four through six and a gymnasium and library to the elementary school, the high school became completely for the junior and senior high students. However, for a few years some sixth grades had to meet in the high school because of temporary lack of space in the elementary school. Next year, with the completion of the Phelps-Clifton Springs high school building, this building probably will become the Phelps Middle School with grades five through eight. 1,- X +41 A if at, M., 1 '
