D. January 17, 1911-January 19, 1961 Dr. Willson was born in Colegrove, Pennsylvania, the youngest of six children. His father was an Epis- copal rector, and the family lived in many towns and houses, but the one permanent home Was the cottage at nearby Canandaigua Lake which they purchased in 1922. Dr. Willson graduated from high school at Corning Free Academy and had an athletic scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania where he played football and lacrosse. He played professional football with the Philadelphia Eagles and earned money to complete his pre-medical studies and medical school at Syracuse University. He married the former Marion Fuller of Oakfield in 1935 and graduated from Syracuse in 1940. He interned for two years at Rochester General Hospital and served from August 1942 to December 19415 in the Army Medical Corps. f The Willsons moved to Phelps in 1946 and Dr. Willson purchased the home and practice of Dr. Landers. He Was village health officer and conducted the school health clinics. Dr. Willson also took care of many injured students and delivered many members of the present graduating class. Denis Good- man and Sharon Davis were our Student Council Representatives. Our coaches were Mrs. Chrissie Nagel, Mr. Arlon Wilber, and Mr. David DeVito. During the first quarter of our game, we held Hliiaindrop Hop, our first record hop, and a roller skating party. During the second quarter, our team of eighty-seven was led by Denis Goodman, president, Nancy VanNostrand, vice-president, Pamela Smith, secretary, and Linda Hulster, treasurer. Our representa- tives to Student Council were Molly King and Dennis Coston. With our new advisor, Mrs. Crane, who replaced Mrs. Nagel, and our two other advisors, Mr. Wilber and Mr. DeVito, we held a record hop, Twilight Twirpf' and a roller skating party. In the third quarter, we appeared on the court with a squad of eighty-six led by Denis Goodman, president, and assisted by Dennis Coston, Vice-president, Julie Baker, secretary, and Pamela Smith, treasurer. In Student Council we were represented by Daniel Donk, Linda Hulster, Jack Seymour, and Nancy VanNostrand. As this was an important and busy quarter nearing the end of the game, We had a full year. We held a skating party and a record hop HFoo17s Flingfi On April 2, we presented our Junior play, When the Mice Are Away, and on May 21, we held our Junior prom, '4Mystical Moon- light, with music by the Checkmates. The purchase of our class rings also highlighted the all important quarter. Thanks to our same dutiful coaches, we were ready for the final quarter of the big game. With Lee Edington as president, Donald Chimera, vice-president, Linda Hulster, secretary, and Pam- ela Smith, treasurerg our squad of seventy-six filled the court, ready for an active quarter. Our student council representatives were Sharon Davis, David Facer, Donna McLaughlin, and Michael Uttley. Under the direction of our coaches, we held a successful magazine drive in the fall. On November 12, Drums of Death, our Senior play was presented. A roller skating party also helped to fill the treasury. A trip to the Ice Follies on December 4, and our Senior Ball, ccwonderland by Night, on December 22, completed our fast-moving first term. With the selling of pop and candy at the home basketball games and a record hop in the spring, we were ready for our Senior trip and Class Night in June. H The wrestling team enjoyed a fine season, overcoming injuries along the way, to finish second in league competition with a four win, one loss league record. Led by co-captains, Michael Ottley and Dennis Coston, the '6Bulldogs', finished with an overall record of nine wins and five losses. Outstanding achievements this past season included the Winning of the Union Springs lnvitational Tournament and the third straight Section V-Class B championship shield for Dennis Coston. In addition to Coston's championship, both James Kenny and David Williamson were runners-up in sectional finals, while Daniel Donk Won consolation honors for a third-place finish in the sectionals. Top individual records went to James Kenny, 20-1-15 Dennis Coston, 19-2-05 and Lee DeRuyter, 17-2-0. The 1965 track team won all the dual meets, one of the track triangular meets and the Kiwanis relays, the county meet, making them county champions. Many school records were set during the season. Willie Dupree set the triple jump at 39 feet, 11 inches, James Hemminger ran the two mile in 10 minutes, 48.6 seconds, and the Relay team of Dale Brown, Steven Crube, Ronald Nieskes, and Steven Proper ran the 880 in 1 minute, 37 seconds and the 2X5 in 1 minute, 18.1 seconds. A In November, bowling was organized and divided into two leagues, which alternated every other week. Joan Hilfiker was chosen over-all secretary of both leagues. Janice Butler, Donna McLaughlin, Carolyn Pulver, and Nanette Soper were chosen for individual league Secretaries. As a fund raising activity this year, the G.A.A. sponsored a dance, Wllhe Grid Iron Hop. These concerts were given to earn money to buy new band uniforms, which were purchased last fall and worn for the first time at the Christmas Concert. The Student Council began the 1965-66 school year with the following officers: John Drury, presi- dent, Joseph Willson, vice-president, Nancy VanNostrand, secretary, and Judith Manzer, treasurer. Throughout the year the Student Council sought ways of being more effective and helpful. Among its activities Were: sponsorship of,theAmerican Field Service, chartering of the monitor club, a project to help the needy, the selection of four outside assemblies for the coming year, and working to improve school spirit. A suggestion box was placed in the library to enable students to offer suggestions to the student council. Several members attended the OYCSCA meetings to compare notes with representatives in area student councils. Mr. Ward Legg and Mr. Theodore Mullen were the advisors of Student Council. The first issue of the Growler was distributed free of charge to acquaint the entire student body with the paper. The following officers were elected for the 1965-66 school year: Julie Baker, presi- dent, Carolyn Pulver, vice-president, Nancy VanNostrand, secretary, Karen Goodman, treasurerg and Linda Lusso, student council representative. The year's activities included a trip to the State University College at Geneseo, various-films on teaching, a panel discussion with past club members who are presently in college, a roller skating party, a supper, and a project of sending books to the needy. Club members participated in the 'cteacherettei' program where they had a Chance to observe and assist the teacher in a real classroom situation. Some special awards and recognitions received by members during the year were: A first by the Chapter for their Safety display at the County Fair in July, a team placed seventh in Vege- table judging at the State Fair in Sep- tember, Jim Hemminger placed first in the Dairy Showmanship contest and represented the State at the Waterloo, Iowa, Dairy ,Showg Jim also attended the National FFA Convention as a Phelps delegate, and Morris Wilkes and Jim Hemminger qualified as candi- dates for the Empire Farmer degree. Members spent a very busy school year. Among their many activities were: Entries in and management of agri- cultural exhibits at the Community Fair, harvest of Chapter crops and entries in the DeKalb Corn Contest and completion of the Demonstration Con- test, a seed selling campaign, and the annual Parent and Son Banquet in May. .
