J PHELPS CENTRALLSCHGCL P Phelps, New York Presents Phelps Highlights l964 - -, - v' . Phelps Qommumiy Lehrer ilhelps, New Yczrik 14 Foreword We are but a few steps along the ever winding road of life. Our yearbook portrays these' few, yet memorable steps, upon which each of us has tread. There have been some rocks in our way which we have tried to by-pass with many a faltering step, but we are finally at the bridge of graduation. All of us will now cross this bridge and go our, separate ways-each hoping to obtain the goal he dreams of. Every step forward will require all the knowl- edge and leadership we have been taught by the excellent guidance of our faculty. We salute everyone who has made our road a smooth one, and present to them our 1964 Phelps Highlights! AVERY HOLLENBECK Now, as we have reached our final year at Phelps Central, we should be grateful to those people who have made our school years more meaningful. Among those who rank foremost in our minds is Mr. Avery Hollenbeck. Mr. Hollenbeck, known to all as Avery, had been a custodian at our school for almost twenty years and could truly say that he had watched our class grow to its present status. In the elementary grades it was often Avery who cleaned up after us, and in later years it was he who was often on duty at our class activities. Most of all we remember his humorous jokes and his smiling countenance, which was always evident. Avery was truly a friend to all students at the school, and we shall just begin to realize how much a part of Phelps Central School he was and how much we miss him. Therefore, in recognition of his service to the school, we, the Class of 1964, dedicate this book to the memory of Mr. Avery Hollenbeck. In Appreciation g l MR JOHN JARVIS MR. ELLIOTT JOHNSON MISS MARY LOUISE CONNOLLY As the curtain lowers on the last act of our high school career, we, the Class of 1964 7 have become aware of the patience, time, guidance, and understanding given us by our advisors. To Miss Connolly, Mr. Jarvis, and Mr. johnson we say Thank you for helping us to make our many activities successful. If we seemed unappreciative at the time, we realize now that without your leadership and worthwhile opinions our days at P.C.S. could never have been so meaningful. ' Our Exchange Slzzdefz! We are all very proud of the new member in our senior class. He is .Ibrahim Okur from Eskisehir, Turkey, who was sent to Phelps through our local American Field Service chapter. Ibrahim has given us many hours of pleasure by describing his country and its customs to us. He has been very interesting and friendly to everyone. He was a member of the varsity soccer team this year and taught the other players a great deal about the sport, since it is his national sport. He also enjoyed helping us decorate for the senior ball, which was a new experience for him. We shall certainly miss Ibrahim and shall always have fond memories of him. He has been an excellent ambassador of good will and has certainly helped in improving foreign relations between his country and ours. May this understanding and good will continue in the future so that world peace may some day be a reality. ALMA MATER Staunchly stands our alma mater Stately tall and true. 7 Let us all uphold our standards, Whether old or new. CHORUS To Phelps High School alma mater Sing a glad refrain. When the echo dies away, Sing it o'er again. Oh, our interests are with you, Dear old Phelps High School, And we as loyal students Will obey thy rule. In December, Jan Hesbon was elected vice-president to replace John Hofer, who moved away. Our class advisors were Miss Mary Louise Connolly, Mr. John Jarvis, and Mr. Elliott Johnson. The first activity was a divided roller skating party, held on January 27. Then on April 28, we held our first record hop. In June we elected Esther Drury and Roy Wilkes as our Student Council Representatives for the following year. Then in September 1961, seventy-six sophomores proceeded up the ladder by electing Jan Hesbon, presi- dent, Ronald Hilfiker, vice-president, Jeanne King, secretary, Elizabeth Salisbury, treasurer, and Richard Reynolds, assembly committee representative. Our activities for that year included a roller skating party on December 1, a hop on April 28, and the sale of pop and candy at wrestling matches. In June, Esther Drury, Elizabeth Salisbury, Ronald Hilfiker, and Richard Reynolds were elected as Student Council Representatives for the following year. Then in September 1962, seventy-two juniors climbed one rung higher and elected James Preece, presi- dent, Richard Haines, vice-president, Jeanne King, secretary, Esther Drury, treasurer, and Edward McManus assembly committee representative. 7 The class rings were chosen in November, and we anxiously waited till their arrival on February 14. In October we held a roller skating party. The climax of our year's events was the JUNIOR PROM, UMOONLIGHT AND ROSES, held on May 24. This proved to be a huge success and a great experience for all who helped. In June we elected Ferole Parmelee, Esther Drury, Ronald Hilfiker, and Joseph Crowley as our student council representatives for the following year. Our participation in class night concluded the activities for the junior year. In September 1963, sixty-five seniors ascended the final rung of the ladder on our climb to graduation. We elected as officers for the final year: James Preece, president, Harry Van Wickle, vice-president, Jeanne King, Secretary, Cheryl Chester, treasurer, Edward McManus, assembly committee representative, and Charles Culbcelrtson, Student Council Representative to replace Ronald Hilfiker, the newly elected Student Council presi ent. We began our class activities with the annual magazine drive, which proved to be a success by exceeding our gcoai of 33,500 Then on November 8, our senior play, No Boys Allowed, was presented. This not only provi e a lot of fun, but also boosted our treasury considerably. On Ngvembef 16 We atfendgd the 156 Capades in Rochester. , One of the highlights of this year was our senior ball Evergreen Ecsta h 1 , 1 i Sy, e d on December 21. ' First came the secretaries: Barb Altman, Pauline Smith, Pat Dixon, Kathy Donk, Nancy Kamerance, Donna Pollot, and Carol Williams, they all gathered around playboy Barry Powell, Near the Secretaries we saw the accountants: joe Crowley and Stan Rathbun. As the group moved on, one noticed the other teachers on summer vacation: jan Hesbon, Bill Brege, Esther Drury, Betsey Salisbury, and Elaine Atkin, busily discussing their classroom problems. k Glancing out the window, one saw the former class president, jim Preece, now President of the United States, accompanied by Vice-president Ed McManus, arriving in a limousine. They walked in, preceded by the presidents personal bodyguard, Clifford Day, who became interested in police work after his performance in our senior play, N0 Boys Allowed. Everyone was sorry to learn that the Presidents personal doctor, Harry VanWickle, was unable to attend because of illness in the first family. Next came the joint owners of the LBG Dairy Farm: Lee Adams, Bob Day, and Gerry Minns, talking with their old friends: jim Benge, Ted Flood, Rich Haines, Bill johnson, George Knight, and Dave VanDuyne, who were all on special leave from the various branches of the service. Mingling with the crowd, one talked with the housewives: Boni jess Hunt, jo Ann Deuel Conklin, and Cheryl Whelpton Hart, who enthusiastically told all about their children. Sitting down to dinner together were the nurses: Cathy Hall, Penny Davis, Elfleda Morse, and nurse's aide, Eileen Fox. We were pleased to learn that Myrla Kerns is the supervisor of the new psychiatric depart- ment in Bellevue Hospital and that Diana VanNostrand is head of the Physical Therapy department at Clifton Springs Sanitarium. Everyone was very pleased to learn that many class members have achieved success in their various fields. Jeanne King has a wonderful job as private secretary to the president of Eastman Kodak, and Cheryl Chester, a choral director, is now the leader of the Singing Nuns. Leon Ruthven, former record breaking pole vaulter at Phelps Central, went on to win a gold medal for the United States in the 1968 Olympics. Marion Sweeney and Barb Bliven opened up their own beauty salon in Fairbanks, Alaska, and now it is the largest shop there. We heard that Phil Beniamino has become a famous Hollywood actor, playing gangster roles. Dan Minns and Ferole Parmelee, social workers in New York City, have made tremendous improvements in the East Side. We also heard that jack Carney, Roy Wilkes, and Bill Cockett are the managers of a huge farm in the far west. Jack Carney has charge of forestry, Roy Wilkes has charge of dairy farming, and Bill Cockett is the supervisor. D Several class members were unable to be with us. Shirley Vandermill, a successful band director, now has her own weekly television program. Since her program was that night, she was unable to be Wlfh US- The engineers, Darrel Coons, jack VanDuser, and Marty Weigel, all sent their regards to us from Cape Kennedy, where they are working on the new luxury liner to the moon. After dinner at Ralph's restaurant, everyone who could, flew to New York to see john Raczenski, filmed pitcher of the New York Yankees, play ball. After the game, Charlie Culbertson, OWUU gf the PIQYPOY Club, entertained his old friends. Charli Orleans during his Senior year. The play takes place in the Baxter home during ,the spring. Rita is told that her steady, Fred, has kissed a blond, who is really his cousin, at the airport. Fred tries to explain, but to no avail. Rita has a pajama party for her girlfriends. A prowler has been seen in the neighborhood QMr. Midnightj and is trapped in Rita's house Qunknown to the girlsj. The girls invite some boys over to protect them in case of trouble. The story is filled with moments of fear, laughter, and mystery.
