It is here, where each and every one of us is taught the essen- tial education needed to prepare us for the years to come. As the war has not ended yet, the future and what is in store for us is very uncertain. No matter where we are or what we are doing, we will always remember the Phelps Central School, and respect the high ideals it has set forth. So that we will always remember our high school years, we have published this, the Phelps Highlights. We hope that the reading of this book will bring you as much enjoyment as we have had in compiling it. Z ' 'Jr' -f ' V -- . i V- .. . Her 3SSlSt311t WSIS Jacob LOCk6- ineyer, while Eleanor Canne took care of our correspondence. Marion Donnelly had charge of our finances. Mrs. Miller, Mr. Hartmann and Mr. Leader were our faculty admirals. The next year we were promoted to Second-Class Seamen-48 strong. This term Alfred Ruthven, Robert Craig, Helen Converse and Jacob Lockemeyer were our class officers. Mrs. Widmer and Mr. Cook replaced Mrs. Miller and Mr. Leader who had received honorable discharges from P.C.5. In our Junior year 36 of the group started the term. The commanding officers elected were: Jacob Lockemeyer, President, Ellsworth Updyke, Vice-President, Sec- retary, Alfred Ruthven, and Treasurer, Floyd Totman. Up until this year we had been rather an inactive company. But during the year we purchased our Class rings which we like very much. Our MNeptune's Prom was the most successful venture of the year. Admiral Hartmann left us, but Mrs. Widmer and Mr. Cook remained with our company. There were 37 Lieutenants to start our last year. ,lacob Lockemeyer again commanded us, aided by Vice-President Dorothy Hicks, Secretary Eleanor Canne, and Treasurer Floyd Totman. This last year we held a very successful-both social and financial-Christmas Ball. Our Senior Play, held in April, proved that we had some remarkable talent in the group. ln June we are planning to take a shakedown cruise. Mrs. Burns, who took Mrs. Widmefs place, and Mr. Cook advised us in our last year at P.C.S. We'd like to promote Mr. Cook to a five-star admiral for his cap- able help and guidance during our four years. Now that our training has been completed we've realized that four years go by all too quickly. We, the Seniors, close this, our history, especially paying tribute to those who actually became Hbootsn or uprivatesn before they could graduate. WC, the Seniors, have plans made for the future and discussed all the different angles of various professions and trades. Well, years can change things. Paul Adams discovered that it takes years of hard work to build a truck and farming business. Would you have succeeded, Paul, without the able assistance of Bose Verdehem? 0 Jerry Goodman has just built a large G.L.F. plant in Iunius after years of planning. His wife, Muriel Bennett, advertising manager. Farmers from all over this area travel to trade there. By hard work in high school, George DeBoover and Bill Lyon have one of the most scientific farms of this county. flf you are doubtful, ask them.J It may be a coincidence, but the person in school who always had an answer for every question is now one of our important radio figures. He can be heard every Tuesday night at 9:30 on station l'I.I.O.U. It is none other than Phil Gifford with his famous NYour Questions Answered Here program. There were three senior girls who decided to be secretaries in big business. As information comes in about the alumni, I notice that Eleanor Canne is head secre- tary at Lawyer Richard McIntyre's Law Office in New York City. Do you think your business would have been prosperous without the tiring efforts of your teachers at school? Evelyn DeWind is taking care of all the bookkeeping and other details at the Phelps G.L.F., which is under the management of her husband, Glenn Morgan. As I glance through the newspapers, I notice that Betty Knauss is working as a stenographer at the American Can. Here is one girl who made good use of her high school education. Alfred Ruthven just took over his brother's trucking business, also the service station. There is one little thing people have objected to, he 'always arrives late for work. Habits are hard to break you know. I I just finished reading a college newspaper from the University of Rochester. As the students give comments on their favorite teachers, I see the name of Floyd Tot- man, American History, and Paul Crough, Mathematics teacher. I,m sure every one of the class of '45 is proud of these two prominent educators. Who knows, some day they may teach at Phelps Central. Bell Aircraft has just put out a new plane, designed by James Griffee. It is the best plane ever put out by this plant. It will be given a trial test by the famous test pilot of W.W. 2, Captain Ellsworth Updyke, who has tested more planes than coffee beans passed the equator. fGood luck, Elsiell The three girls who were always together in high school are still together after all these years. Dorothy Hicks, Jane Goldsworthy and Helen Converse are working at one of the biggest jobs in the United States. They are nurses in the Army. They always did like to travel and meet new people. As there is more need for blueprints of intricate machinery to further the ffrowth of our nation, Charles Cook has himself a life-time job. He is head drafts- idian at General Motors. Charlie is responsible for many of the new modern cars. The great basketball star of our '41114-945 team, Iohn Scherbylh is PlaYing with 19 N59--- W the Fort Wayne Zolleners. John is a regular and plays forward. He averages I5 points a game. D There is one girl to make a prophecy about would be as unpredictable as the weather. Right now she is working on the radio. She can talk all she .wants to over, 64We, The People, Voice Our Opinion. Margaret Petty has had many jobs, too num- erous to mention. Iam sure she is happy now. In the line of sports, we find Charles Blair now playing pro-football. He is an end for the Washington Redskins. His bruising body blocks and tackles are enough to make anybody shudder. Bernie Bremer, with the help of her husband, is now working her father's farm. She helps work the farm days and watches him do housework nights. Our little man of out-of-town, James Hatch, is still doing it. He is a sales- man for the uBuy Your Caskets Early or Invest in Best Companyf' His boss tells me late hours do not affect him. Just like school days, huh, Jim? By all reports, Ray Deliiuyter still travels to Skusels Corners two or threc nights a week. I wonder how long this will continue. Suspense makes people cur- ious, Bay. It was just flashed ovcr the radio that Admiral Walt Smith has just married. The lucky bride is our lady of society, Shirley Eighmey. All of us wish her the best of luck. A new theatre has just been opened in Newark, The DeLuxe, managed by Betty Lou Leverty. By all appearances it is everything that the name implies. Inci- dentally, while in Newark last week I walked past a barber shop and I saw Virginia DeLooze waiting for her husband. She waited about one hour. During our senior year in high school, I remember an incident just like the one I just mentioned. What is the matter with your persuasive powers, Virginia? In the growing town of Oaks Corners a new store has just been built. It is a five and ten cent store, managed by Lois Overslaugh. fLois figured it would increase the population and they might eventually become a city. il Another one of our former classmates in the service is Betty Pallot. She is in the Nurse Corps, stationed in England. I have not heard any of them complain about going overseas. I wonder why? One of our alumni who is happily married is Ruth Clement. She is living in that wonderful town of Penn Yan. Another one of our alumnus who has moved out of town is Dorothea Lunick. She is now living in Dundee, happily married. Betty Craig has a very successful job. In a law office. The name has not been disclosed. Betty is a difficult person to find when information is needed. As the years pass, many of these people will change their occupations. We wish them all the success in the world, no matter what they do. Iacob Lockemeyer Dorothea Lunick Bill Lyon ...... 'I Basketball - 1944 . 45 Phelps had a very excellent season this year, winning all but one game in the B-C League. Zeke Lockemeyer, center, was our Captain, and had for his supporters, Pete Adams, Johnnie Scherbyn, Jim Hatch and Harold Fagner, as well as the entire student body. One very important event was the Phelps-Manchester game. Phelps won the first game at Manchester with a score of 21-23. Then Manchester took Phelps on our home court, 22-29. In several games the Phelps team began to slow down and were in a slump, but they regained their strength in the next two games and all in all it was a highly enjoyable and successful season. Phelps played NB7' League basketball this year and took the Finger Lakes League HB championship. At the time of this Writing the season is not completely over but We trust that it will prove successful. 30 'C' '-xr- 4 ' ' l H K if-TTKTTA HT-T-Yu-T V-T' ff , A'?7- f' . , - -ff' -' - f- 4 - 'W -. .M ...i1L.1 .x'i ' .,' H First Row: Adams, Scherbyn, Mauro, Greenwood, Mollenkoph, Wilbur, Hatch. Football The third season of six-man football at Phelps Central was a short one. Due to the closing of school because of the epidemic of polio, the Phelps team had only two weeks of practice before our first game. Our first game was with Weedsport. Phelps showed good spirit, but due to lack of experience, lost by a score of '32 to 13. The second game of the season was with Romulus. This time Phelps showed more power, especially in the second half of the game, but Romulus had too large a lead on us and won by the score of 38 to 28. Phelps lost the third game of the season, which was a return game with Weeds- port, by the score of 36 to 12.
