minimiil PFEIFFER COLLEGE Misenheimer, North Carolina 3« W Philip Shepard . Editor Kenneth Marlow Business Manager VV-'£r ;' OBERLIN HOME AND SCHOOL — 1885 HISTORY EVENTY-FIVE years ago, in a remote section near Lenoir, a missionary-minded woman from Connecticut joined with local citizens to establish a small elemen- tary school for mountain children. What began in an eleven-room frame build- ing as Miss Emily Prudden's Oberlin Home and School is today a five million dollar educational plant at Misenheimer. From its inception Pfeiffer College has rendered outstanding service to North Carolina and to Methodism. Today over seven hundred students, representing many faiths from across the nation and the world, com- prise the student body. The years since 1885 have seen the institution in a continuous expansion of its aca- demic scope—from grade school to high school, from junior college to senior college status. During the current year the senior college received recognition by the accrediting agencies of the region, the nation, and the church—a fitting salute on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the institution. We are proud of our re- markable administrative leadership, of an outstanding faculty, of a spirited student body, of the imposing four hundred acre campus. Phenomenal growth has become a part of the vocabulary of every Pfeifferite, but the true distinction which commands our loyalty is not growth, but constancy. An abiding devotion to Christian education, a belief in the worth of the individual, a dedication to service in the community and the world—these are the true marks of Pfeiffer College: For Chapel Spire and Spirit . . . Moments to remember and the gateway to the future. •i To say that he has given a lifetime in service to education is to say that which can be said about many another man. But it is a rare individual in- deed whose contribution to education has been as rich and varied and rewarding as has that of Paul Mowbray Wheeler. A master teacher, he has guided students across the years at Columbia, Georgia School of Technol- ogy, University of Maryland, Florida Southern, Goucher, Johns Hopkins, Winthrop, and Pfeiffer. A scholar and a poet, his gifts to literature have been permeated by a broad, human perspective. A brilliant wit (remember the telegram to his beloved mutts?), a gifted lecturer (who will forget his clas- sic series on the Poets of Our Time?), and a dedi- cated churchman, Dr. Wheeler has made a lasting contribution to both education and the community at large. Above all, Paul Mowbray Wheeler is a genuine humanitarian. However exasperating his notorious gadgeteering, his profound personal concern for student welfare has won our gratitude and our love. For six years now he has been our Dean. Hav- ing tended Pfeiffer's academic life during the period of its greatest growth, he now takes leave of his post. Recently he remarked that Pfeiffer will go on and on. We predict that so long as it does, there will be those who remember it because of the stamp Paul Mowbray Wheeler left upon it. With deep respect, we affectionately dedicate this book to THE DEAN C nX r s DEDICATION ........... ADMINISTRATION...... CLASSES ACTIVITIES ..... FEATURES.............. SPORTS ............. Through participa- tion in this organization, the students learn to exer- cise their democratic rights by electing the officers and representatives who work in their interest. The Council functions as a co-ordinating center for the other governmental organizations and en- deavors to promote understanding between the ad- ministration and student body. The Judicial Committee, composed of Student Council members, acts on violations of the college rules and regulations not designated to the Men's and Women's Student Government Associations. It also acts on any case which is referred to it from either of those organizations. Each year for the recreation and enjoyment of the students, the Student Government Association sponsors many activities, such as parties and dances. The annual George Washington Ball, one of the social highlights of the college year, is sponsored by the Student Government Association. This year the famous bandleader, Ralph Marterie, played for this dance. Another activity sponsored by this organiza- tion is the ever popular sock hop. Sock hops are usually held after ball games and are promoted by the Student Government Association in an attempt to provide wholesome recreation for the students. After losing by one point to Catawba the luckless ball club never seemed to get on its feet again. How- ever, one must not criticize these men with- out taking a close look at the tough schedule which proved too much for them. High Point, Catawba College, Atlantic Christian, David- son, Pembroke, and Elon all had terrific teams and winning seasons. With reserve power and experience these teams had little trouble knocking off the Panthers. I 48 Individually, several stars stand out in the past season. Thurston Frye's soft touch stripped the nets for a game average of just under twenty points. His rebounding, ball handling, and never-say-die spirit was ob- vious in every game. Leon Smith, a senior from Kentucky, con- trolled the backboards for Pfeiffer as he snatched over 200 rebounds for the Panther ball club. Hustle and determination marked his play forcing his opponents to recognize the Bear's constant threat. Sophomore Bill Claypoole, with a spectacu- lar jump shot, contributed much to the clos- ing battle. Bill's ability to hit from any angle posed a great difficulty in containing the high scoring guard. John Stokes proved himself to be the most im- proved player on the courts and by mid-season was winning every match he played. Soccer launched its 1959 season with an enthusiastic pep rally before meeting Washington and Lee. However, in spite of determina- tion and fighting spirit the Virginians proved too much for Coach Lefko's battling team and walked away with a 5-1 decision. It was a lean season for the win-hungry Panthers until starvation caused a late season explo- sion over previously undefeated Warren-Wilson College. The record does not show the grim determination, su- preme effort, and long hours that went into the season's play. Jerry Stump Bryson was outstanding on the play- ing field and showed terrific spirit throughout the long season. Performing in in- tramural sports permits one to acquire and maintain physical strength; to make new and lasting friendships; and, most impor- tant, have fun. Big Joe spikes one! Championship playoffs Many things go into making a yearbook—many things that the person who has not been an editor dees not realize. Selection of a theme, deter- mining the amount of copy, dedication, number and type of pictures, these are but a few of the problems to be considered when determining the layout. After the layout is completed comes the actual work of getting the materials that make up a yearbook. All these things take time and hard work. This acknowledgement is a salute to those many people who contributed so vitally to the making of the 1960 Chimes. We hope that out of our efforts has come a book that you, the student body, will be proud of. A yearbook consists of the efforts of many people united, yet working separately, toward a common goal. Of the many people who contributed to the making of this book I would first like to thank Bill Avant who worked many long hard hours taking most of the photographs which appear in this book. The literary staff, composed of Judy Matthews, Janice Pickett, Jane Sidbury, Diane Thompson, Joy Thore, and headed by Kaye Blakely, did a wonderful job writing copy. The constant clatter of typewriters told of the long hours and hard work performed by Barbara and Marjorie Smith, typing co-editors. An excellent job was done on the classes by Peggy Gilchrist, Phil Clark, Norma Bennett, Bob Clanton, and Linda Kiker. Working hard in spite of a lack of time, in the face of innumerable sad stories told by merchants, and many other problems, the business staff composed of Kenneth Marlow, Richard Snodgrass, Linda Kiker, Helen Brewer, and Sara Durham, sold the ads necessary to keep the yearbook out of the red. For this fine job they have my sincerest thanks. Thanks are in order to David Creech for produc- ing what I feel is one of the finest sports sections ever presented by the Chimes. Others who contributed generously of their time and energy include Dorathy Chance and Janice Small. Special thanks to Mr. Walter Gibson, Rev. A. James Clemmer, and Tom Jones of the Pfeiffer News for their con- tributions and wonderful assistance. I feel that a special note of thanks is in order to Dr. Daniel Leidig, my advisor, and to Assistant Editor Edith Christy, who contributed in many, many ways to the completion of this year's book, and without whose out- standing efforts it could not have been completed. To these and all others who contributed to the 1960 Chimes, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. 168 Best Wishes to PFEIFFER COLLEGE We are happy to have served the faculty, staff, and student body for 51 years, and we extend to you a cordial invitation to stop by to see us.
