By receiving a superior rating there, they were made eligible for state competition. The state contest was held at Springfield, where the choir re- ceived an excellent rating. The boys' and girls' glee clubs were open to all students from the upper four grades who wished to sing in them. Be- sides singing in concerts, they also com- peted in the district contest where both received excellent ratings. The band consisted of grade students as well as of high school students. They played at basketball games, pep meetings, school concerts, and on other occasions. The orchestra was started between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Except for one player, the string section was made up entirely of beginning players. They made their debut at the baccalaureate service in May. This year a junior chorus, composed of seventh and eighth graders, was or- ganized, The chorus took part in con- certs and also sang at the baccalaureate service. Mr. Edington encouraged the members of the larger music groups to organize into small ensembles. T h e results of this encouragement was the establishment of ten ensembles. This small group pra- tice strengthened the larger groups. The boys' ensemble number l was organized at the beginning of the school year as a quartet--Charles Beck, Glen Miller, William Nofziger, and D i c k Sharman. W i t h an additional member, Curtis Spengler, they entered the dis- trict music contest as a quintet. There they received a superior rating. They also received a superior rating at the state contest at Westerville. The boys' ensemble number 2 received an excellent rating at the district con- test. Those in the ensemble were Merle Frey, Robert Eicher, Clarence Bruner, Marlin Miller, Vincent Frey, Marvin Frey, Merrill Nofziger, and Ervin Miller. Those in the girls' ensemble number l were Arleta Miller, Luana Leininger, Marilyn Haskell, Nancy Porter, Lois Mer- illat, and Edith Haskell. They received an excellent rating at the district music contest. The girls'ensemble number 2 received a superior rating at both the district and state contests. Members of the sex- tet were Laura Jane and Marilyn Gearig, Evelyn Short, Phyllis Frey, Marilyn Frey, and Clemma Roth. The mixed octet, consisting of Luana Leininger, Marilyn Haskell,Lois Merillat, Edith Haskell, Charles Beck, Glen Miller, William Nofziger, and Dick Sherman, was organized at the beginning of the year. At the district contest, they were rated superior and at the state excellent. The mixed ensemble number 2 received an excellent rating at the district con- test. Those in the quartet were Glenda and Marilyn Frey, Lester King, and Marlin Millers Ralph Bruner, Phyllis Schmu c k e r, Carol Vonier, and Delight Grieser entered the district music contest as a clarinet quartet. They were rated very good, The brass quartet-Curtis Spengler, James Waidelich, John Rychener, and Ralph Gasche-rated excellent at the district music contest. Glenda Frey and Elaine Rychener en- tered the district contest as piano solo- ists. Each of the girls received an excellent rating on her performance. Lester King received a very good rating on his tenor solo. He sang UI Come To Thee.W Shari Weber received an excellent rating at the district contest on her trumpet solo. L6 -jh.,. . . w t:. . Under this program the State of Ohio furnished a part of the money to change the old shop to an agriculture classroom and to convert a part of the bus shed into a modern shop to be used until permanent quarters could be provided. Two agriculture classes were conduct- ed by Mr. Pollock, the new teacher--fresh- manreophomore and Junior-senior. Various problems pertaining to agriculture were discussed in class. Much time was spent in the shop on various jobs. Tractors and farm machinery, brought in by the boys, were studied and repaired. This year's varsity, in comparison with the last few years, had a successful season. Under the fine coaching of Mr. Rex, the Blackbirds won 5 and lost 13 of their regular season games. They also won their first tournament g a m e since 1945. In spite of their definite improvement, the boys lost their second and third tournament games and were thus eliminated from competition. The forwards for the team consisted of Jim Grieser, who led the team in rebounding, Kenny Nofziger, the hard-driving forward who always managed to get through, and Bob Eicher, an artist on long shots. The guards were Ernie Fowler, a fast little fellow, who really concentrated on the basket, Dick Sherman a specialist in split-vision passing, and Clarence Bruner who alternated playing forward and guard. Roger Gilson, the team's center, was always worth a lot of points on his book anC lay-up shots. SEMO? CHFFQ! New twenty classes have graduated, with a total of 392 graduates. This number includes the clelse of 1950, with 22 members. Of this number, only two have died. Nei- ther of these were natural deaths. The two are Kenneth Ioder, who died in an automobile accident, and I d w a rd Ziegler, who was killed in Trance in World War II. The alumni are scattered over many states from Massa- chusetts to California., and several are in foreign co1m- tries. Mc.. ...Q .' .fmglv ' - lyiilggmgig 1 The people of this community saw a long-awaited dream fulfilled in the fall of 1929, when a new modern school build- ing was dedicated, and for the first time Pettisville could boast a full 12-year school program with a faculty of 12 mem- bers, headed by Supt. J. J. Bychener. Of the original faculty, three mem- bers still remain at Pettisville School- Mr. S. H. Gottschalk, now superintendent, Miss Ruth I. Wyse, and Miss Alta Spiess. As the years rolled on, it was in- creasingly clear that the facilities of the present building were becoming inade- quate for the needs of the community. Especially needed were an expanded agri- culture program and more adequate msio quarters. The music building md been taken over by the kindergarten when lt was organized at a time when the music program was curtailed because of a short- age of music teachers during the war. The need for a cafeteria was also apparent as all but a handful of students remain at school during the noon hour. More and more students have abandoned the dinner pail for purchased lunches, and the school lacked facilities for serving. Community agitation for action came to a head last fall when a proposed bond issue for Sl66,000 for a new addition was approved by the voters by an overwhelming vote of 232 to 25 or by 90.3 per cent. The issue passed by a geater mjority than any other school b o n d issue in Northwestern Ohio, a remarkable record. The election had been preceded by a great deal of effort on the part of the school beard and Supt. Gottschalk. The architect firm of Britsch and Hunger of Toledo was engaged to draw up tentative plans. Arrangements and publicity for the election md to be planned. A public meeting was held at the school with Mr. Britsch present to explain the proposed plan and to answer questions about it. Various changes. in the original plan were made before the final blueprints were approved. Bids for contracts were to be opened on July 10, after which it was hoped work would start immediately. The plans include some changes in the present building and a completely new wing. The improved auditorium will in- clude the present one, widened by removal of the s t a g e and dressing rooms and lengthened by the extension of the new wing to the south. This change will en- large the playing floor to 1-P2 by 80 feet. ' ' Zfltxxa- ' Tl be-...,.4cL':l fi Q kYl: Y . I Y NHUN E W vvl 55 2: Q!-:E -16' rv T s N' 'A IN Q SC H004 Q2 ' The present incline seats will be.left as they are and additional ones placed in the extension. Sufficient space on the east side w 1 1 l accomodate remoyable bleachers to seat large crowds at games. Locker rooms for both boys and girls will accupy quarters below the stage, and an office for the athletic director will overlook the gymnasium floor. The stage, which will be about twice the size of the present one, will be placed at the south end of the auditorium. Dressing rooms on either side will be convenient to the ltagae Charters for the music department are to be behind the stage, on a level with it. A movable wall will separate the stage from the large rehearsal room. Removal of the wall will increase the stage area to a size large enough to hold extremely large groups. T w o practice rooms, storage rooms, and an office for the director complete the music rooms. The cafeteria, with dining room and kitchen, will occupy much of the space below the stage and music rooms. The farm shop and agriculture room will be located in the southeast corner of the new wing. In order to comply with state regulations of the Smith-Hughes program, which the school was able to se- cure for the first time this year, the quarters for this department must be in the main building of the school plant. The temporary shop is now,l6cated in the bus building and will be abandoned. When the addition is completed, the Pettisville School district will again be able to boast of adequate facilities for today's school needs. It speaks well for the progressiveness of the community that it is eager to give to its youth the best that can be provided in modern education, to fit it for life today. ,...- N-' . --.. . . .,.Zg. .:. . ...-'-.
