Track The members of this year's track team participated in four meets. Two triangu- lar meets were held with Archbold and Fay- ette, in which the local thinclads cap- tured second place once,and third the next The half-mile relay team, composed of Ed Grime, Louis Haskell, Russel Liechty, and Jim Grieser and Ernie Fowler alternat- ing, pounced on two first places by win- ning in the triangular meets. Liechty, the fastest man on the team, took first twice in the 100-yard dash and once in t h e 220-yard dash. Fowler was able to take two firsts in the pole vault. Haskell. Schmitz, and Grime each usually brought home a second place or two. Team The Fulton County track meet,held May l7 at Delta, was won by Delta with 76 points. Swanton had 74 oints, Archbold meet was 442, and Pettisville 173. The postponed from May 11 because of rain. Although the local team won no firsts marked up one second and two thirds were to their credit. Grime shared a three-way tie for second place in the high Jump, and placed fifth in the 100-yard dash. The half mile relay team w o n third place. L. Rupp w a s third in the 120-yard high hurdles. W. Nofzlger took fourth in the shot put. The mile relay team place d fourth. Haskell won fourth place in the broad Jump and fifth in the 220-yard dash. Fowler tied for fifth in the pole vault. Not on picture: Bzssel Liechty. Lowell Rupp. Baseball Although the Blackblrds came close to winning a couple of games this year, their season was made up of defeats. One of the most exciting games was the 2-l decision made between the Blackbirds and the Fayette Eagles, in favor of Fayette For their tournament games this spring, the Blackbirds competed with the Lyons club--and lost by a score of ll-3. Boys who saw the most frequent action were lllliam Nofziger, part time pitcher and catcher: Ed Grime, pitcher: Ed Short, part time catcherg Louis Haskell, first base: Richard Schmitz and Dick Rupp, al- ternating at secondg Bob Eicher, short stop: William Nofziger and Dick Sherman at third base. The outfield was composed of Ernest Fowler, l e f t field: Russel Liechty, center field: and Kenneth Nef- ziger, right field. Hr. Springer coached the team. Sahball The Junior high softball team, which was made up of seventh and eighth grade boys, won its first game by defeating the Tedrow nine 7-5. The boys played four games during the season. Two were with Tedrow the second of which they lost. The two other games were with Chesterfield. Coach Ray reports that the boys have shown great improvement and that he sees great prospects for next year's team win- ning a good percentage of their games. Sitting: Richard Rupp, Bob Eicher, Ernest Fowler, Harry Bruner,Richard Schmitz, Clarence Bruner. Although t h e Varsity suffered a season of nineteen losses and no victories, the boys were always out to give their rivals a good scrap. They came close to winning a few games, which were lost by only a couple of points. The boys who most frequently saw action on the Varsity were Kenneth Nofziger, Louie Haskell, Jim Grieser. Ed Grime, Richard Grieser, Richard Schmitz, and Ernest Fowler. The Reserves chalked up three victories, however, by defeating Chesterfield once a n d Fayette twice. Leading scorers were Ernest Fowler, Bob Eicher, and Harry Bruner. In spite of the poor results, the boys did show much improvement in t h e latter part of the season, for which great credit goes to the coach and to the boys' efforts. The 1948 Lariat Page 39
