When we were freshmen class advisor. Initiation Anna Rose Leu was elected president, and Miss Dukes with its laughter and fun, seemed to be the most important class event. Later in the year, of course, we gave a return party for the sophomores. as freshmen the joke was on us but laughing at the new freshmen. with the aid Dukes as class advisor, the sophomores made instructions. as sophomores we had our turn at of Walter Gisel as president and Miss the freshmen obey their initiation This-brings us to the junior year, a year of activities with Donald Neldhardt as president and Miss Wyse as class advisor. As usual it was the juniors' duty to publish PET ECHOES, the school paper. Also a play, A TALE OF TWO SILLIES, was presented and proved to be a great success. During the later part of the school term we sponsored the junior-senior banquet. Here we are, in 1936, with twenty-four still on board the ship, having Lowell Rychener as captain and Miss Wyse as advisor. Of course the greatest task before us this year has been publishing the 1936 'LARIAT'. Naturally, we believe our annual is the best ever published here. As the curtains close on the commencement scene, we utter sighs of re- gret at leaving, but only for a moment, for we are looking forward to facing new experiences of life and finding our niches in this great expanse of land and water called the world. CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of Pettisville High School of 1936, being of sane mind and sound memory, publish and declare this to be our last will and testament: Trula Clair wills her nail polish to Mr. steigely. After having served twenty-five years as Lady Supervisor of Alcatraz Prison, , I, Eileen Williams, suddenly find myself yearning to re- turn to the land of Peace and Plenty. The pilot briefly explains that he has to stop here a moment, that this is the home of Lowell Rychener and his . servant I inquire about the landing field. Well, he certainly is amazed to find a living white person who had not heard of Lowell's invention! At present Dorothy Ruetz is in Paris giving demonstrations of her new style of hair dress. And are they a hit! Georgia tells me also hos everybody goes to the circus these days to see the stunning clown, Louis Le man. He also has fattened his purse. It is time to go on. After a hop of a couple hours we land at Yellow- stone National Park. On my afternoon stroll I see a couple. The woman looks familiar. It is Helen Nafziger and her husband who are on their honeymoon now. Helen has just finished a successful business career. I again ask for more news. She tells me that Paul Hess is hailed as the greatest governor Ohio has ever had and his name is prominently mentioned as presidential candidate. Berneda Seller is his private stenographer. SOPHOUORI CLASS HISTORY Tootl Toot! le are leaving the station at Freshman for the town of Sophomore. when we started forty 'Freshies' boarded the new streamlined train, 'Education', to take us on our journey of learning. Virgil Sunday was elected engineer and Maurice Frey our assistant engineer. Arlene Neidhardt was chosen conductor to take care of the money and the accounts of our special meetings. le elected Mr. Gottschalk to aid us when we should become entangled in difficulties on our first journey. During our travels the train ahead of us initiated us, after which we felt more dignified. Frequently we were hit by storms but we could not expect perfect weather all the time. All of us recovered from the calamity, 'The Blizzard of final Exam1nations'. During this first year a few left our train to board the 'Train of Life'. After resting at the town of Vacation temporarily, thirty-six of us boarded the train, 'Education', at the town of Sophomore. Maurice was elected en- gineer, Robert Hull assistant engineer, and Betty Rupp conductor. Miss Giga: was chosen to help us through the arduous places. our trip from town Sophomore was more tempestuous than our trip the year before. It was to be expected that we meet storms and find obstaclesvlying across our path be- cause we should be progressive instead of retrogressive. As is the custom, we initiated the Freshmen this year. We have successfully passed 'The Tempest of First Se- mester Exams' and are preparing for the most diffi- cult tests, 'The Tempest of Final Exam1nat1ons'. Already we can see our destination for this I year, the station at Junior, very dimly, in the X distance. ll :gr n L--,, ,V IH ITIBE' ll lllllm FRESH EN CLASS HISTORY il ' First floor-that's where vou'11 find us because we're just beginners: at least the rest of the high school seems to think so. Some of us were very shy, fearing we would do something wrong, although we were glad for the new title. Several of the class dropped out soon but the rest of us are still tugging for good grades. - A few weeks after school had started we called a class meeting to e- lect officers. Robert Rychener won the election and became president while Paul Rychener took second place and became vice-president. le trusted Leona Laxrance both with our money and with writing up the minutes, and as a result elected her as secretary-treasurer. We chose lr. Robbins as class sponser to guide us through all our difficulties. You may see some members of our class represented in all school activities. Problems concerning the welfare of our schoo1'are discussed and settled to the best of our ability. The council widened its duties this year in order to have a more decided in- fluence on the school. It sponsored an attendance project which had a noticeable effect on the grades. This organization was created not only in order to criticise, but to make our school better in every way by constructive criticism and advice. With the cooperation of the school our objectives have, at least partially, been accomplished. C 1 I , 4 25 -.4 iklu.a. X l Pl.'!' ECHOES H PIT ICHOIB this year has been more of a success than other years, we think, The first issue was given free to all families represented in school. This, nat- urally, added a good many subscriptions to our list. The paper is published every second Tuesday of the school year. le have added some new features to the paper this year, such as birthdays end a snooper col nm, which attracted considerable interest. The paper has been improved by hard work and different features. Carl Beck has headed the staff this year. lost of the staff belongs to the junior class as the paper is a junior project. 26 LIBRARY BTU? The library staff is one of the lost important organizations in the Pettisville High School. It ts divided into two groups, of which the head libre. rian, Helen lafziger, is in charge. The one group consists his assistants for each study period, who check all books taken The other group, consisting of the head librarian, Lorraine Grieser, and Helen hey, sends, reblnds, and keeps the books of a librarian and out and returned. Liechty , Florence in good condition for use. Kiss lyse, the faculty supervisor of this organization, helps them and advises them in their work. As our library has not received many new books this year, sary that the staff keep those that we have in good condition. it has been nece- le, the seniors, hope that even better care will be given the books in the future and that mny new ones may be added to the library. N lmf nl CHORUS The chorus has done much to help promote harmony in school life this year. The interest which the members of the chorus and the school have shown in it have helped to make it a success. The chorus gave a very successful performance of the operetta, ABI THE PROFESSOR, in which the members were given an opportuni- ty to display their talents. 28 BAND Due to the graduation of last year the band had to be rebuilt in most of its sections. After the first of the year it began to show some progress which continued throughout the rest of the year. Our director, Mr. Bteigely, has worked hard to improve the band and we feel that he has accomplished much in this way. The hand played for the junior class play and other school activities. ORCH BTRA Progress is the keynote to success. To say our orchestra has struck the keynote is to say it has been successful. During the past year the orchestra has shown much improvement under the di- rection of Mr. Steigely. It played for various school programs and whenever called upon by the community. A number of students from the lower grades, who play instruments, were brought into the orchestra. We are expecting big things from those who are starting while they are in the lower grades. X 29 'N X l LITERARY SOCIETIES The literary societies this year were made up of the students from the classes seven to twelve inclusive. The seventh, ninth, and e- leventh grades formed oneg the eighth, tenth, and twelfth grades formed the oth- er. The former organization elected Helen Rychener president and Marjorie Siegsl vice-president and the latter elected Lawrence Weber president, Florence Richer vice-president, and Trula Clair secretary-treasurer. The programs given by both societies were educational as well as intertain- ing. The program committees and the students deserve credit for the way they oo- operated and for the effort they put forth in preparing the programs which were given every other Friday. SAILING HOME MAKERS This year the home economics club had a larger membership than ever before. Early in the fall we met and organized. The officers were as follows: president, Dorothy Ruetzg vice-president, Georgia Huber, secretary-treasurer, Trula Clalrg chairman of the program committee, Wauneta Wyse. Our programs were very inter- esting and educational. They included a style show, a kitchen cabinet band, and personal grooming. At Christmas time we had a party, exchanged gifts, and served refreshments. Miss Gigax was our advisor and we feel she has worked very hard to make our club a success. 30 ATHLETICS U fflffi q Fjjil - 5.0 fm t - BOOST ER COMM I TTEE B 11315 ll :Il The Booster Committee consists of Betty Rupp, chairman, Trula Clair, and Virginia Hill, with Georgia Huber and Helen Rychener, senior high cheer leaders, and Hazel Taylor and Betty Neidhardt, junior high cheer leaders. The Booster com- mittee this year did all it could to increase the school spirit and improve the sportsmanship of the school and community. The members of the committee worked hard all year to baci the team and school. At every home game they gave the team a small treat and at games away from home gave them little souvenirs. We, the Booster Committee, hope that the future Boosters will keep up the good Iork. 32 LETTERl N'S ASSOCIATION The Pettiaville athletic association is an organization composed of boys of the school who have been awarded an official athletic emblem for participation in some branch of high school sport. It is the purpose of this organization to raise the standard of athletics by stimulating interest in and cooperation with the athletic department in every nossible wav. In order to become a member of this organization one must play in at least one half the quarters of the basketball games. J:fx . XQfSl' ,U L 'YSREFE fm ' E :S l ' max noun, nom: 'rows Bob Bruce Choward Nofslgerl returns to his home town heralded as an example of great success. The whole town greets him as a conquering hero. The fact of the matter, that Bob Bruce ls broke, makes this decidedly em arrassing. In spite of himself he is forced to act the role of the 'llllionaire hero without the m1ll1ons'. Peggy Chelen Rychenerl and Chic Wilton liherman Taylorl conspire together and force him to act the part of a mil- lionaire. lo one else knows of this terrible predicament. Chic is a good friend of Bob's and is the one who is the millionaire. Ihen Bob's sweetheart, Shirley Avery fdrace Taylorl, discovers Bob's situation, Bob ls forced to use caveman methods to keep her quiet. Hugh Gorman fR1chard Oyerl, Bhirley's boy friend before Bob Bruce came to town, and Judge Avery lPaul Smithl, Sh1rley's uncle, are against Bob and try to cause trouble. Bibian Prescott !Dorothy Bernathj is Ch1c's girl friend. Lucius Opperscn fLloyd Huber! thinks a great deal of Peggy and is trying to write a book, he being the hero and Peggy the heroine. Agnabelgs KHelen Burkholderl, an old maid looking for a man, furnishes loads o aug er. A KERRY DEATH Judge Taggert, ably played by Mr. Rychener, was erroneously terrified by an escaped crim1nal,1n the faculty play, A IIIRY DEATH, which was presented April 3. The criminal, Jim the Dandy Knee A. C. Rcbbinsj, proved to be a hen- pecked weakling. Can you imagine Hr. Robbins being so meek? Nevertheless he played the part very realistically. Mr. Babione made the audience enjoy his delineation of the gun-totlng deotective who captured Jim. Kiss lyse, in the role of the Judge's secretary, efficiently arranged for his disappearance which was the basis for the catchy title. With charm and en- thusiasm, lisa lyse developed the Ethel Hopper character into one of the unfor- gettable major roles. Miss Dimke gave vent to her fine dramatic abilities in her portrayal of the exceedingly changeable Irs. Taggert whose emotions were intensified by the false report of the Judge's death which was written by Mary Lou, a character capably lmpersonated by lisa Burkholder. Complications arose when Ernest, the Judge's twin brother, inopportunely arrived. lr. Rychener's dumlinterpretation of the twins expertly emphasized the difference in personalities. Completing the family circle were two daughters, lella and Ruby, well play- ed by Hiss Bteinbrecker and Miss latson respectively. lr. Gottsohalk, as the doctor, enacted one of the difficult roles with ni- cety of finish. lrnest's fiancee and the Hollywood producer were effectively presented by Kiss Spiess and Ir. Stelgely. A mastery of the negro dialect was exhibited by Kiss Hiller, who was the superstitious maid. In keeping with the cheery title, the play had a happy ending. The play was well presented and received much oommendation. -42 ASK THE PROFESSOR Commencement Day at a Girls' School is about the busiest and most colorful day of the entire year. There are always so many things left to be attended to at the last moment, so many good-byes to be said, invitations to be exchanged, chatter and hilarity. On such a day as this, does the story of ASK THE PROFESSOR unfold itself. There are a few clouds and shadows of course, but what of that? Buoyant youth makes good in the end. ASK THE PROFESSOR is the operetta which was successfully produced by the high school chorus this year. The cantata is a verv popular one and was enjoyed by everyone who heard it. Vir- ginia Smith and Marie Spengler played the accompaniment. BACCALAUREATI On Sunday evening, Hay 17, Rev. P. !.
