THE 1933 LARIAT LOOKING BACKWARD We recognize fhe facf fhaf fo furn our faces backward insfead of forward is fo in- vife disasfer and bar progress. This failing has been fhe cause for many downfalls, nofo- bly fhaf of Lof's wife. Buf fo look back is nof fo furn back, and we offen gef a beffer perspecfive of fhe road ahead by looking af fhe road behind. For +ha1- purpose we sfudy fhe hisfory of a counfry, a business, or a movemenfg nof fo gain worfhless facfs, buf fo help inferpref 'rhe fufure. We, fhe Seniors, have been in fhe new Peffisville school building for four years-four enjoyable, profifable years. If is well fo fake a refrospecfive glance and see whaf has been accomplished during fhaf fime. Since we are fhe firsf graduafing class fo have spenf ifs enfire four years in fhis school planf we are, in a way, fhe firsf 'generafion, and besf able fo view fhe pasf and nofe fhe progress made. Since school opened four years ago fhere have been many evidences of progress. The mosf nofable change fo fhe casual observer has been fhe progress in fhe physical environmenf. Ouf of doors, fhe ground has been graded fo a gradual slope. A grow- ing lawn has been sfarfed, wifh a decorafive posf-and-chain enclosure. The sfreef in fronf of fhe building has been improved, as have our play ground and ball diamonds. The physical changes wifhin fhe building ifself are equally clear. Our libraries have grown from a few volumes fo well over a fhousand, including new encyclopedias, dic- fionaries, and aflases. Our laborafory apparafus has developed from a mere beginning fo such an exfenf fhaf we now feel fhaf we have complefely equipped laborafories. New equipmenf has been added fo our Commercial, l-lome Economics, and Manual Arfs deparfmenfs unfil fhey, foo, are 'rhe equal of any. In 'rhe field of compefifion we have made excellenf progress. Sfarfing as a new school, we have already won four counfy awards in afhlefics, and have ranked equally high in music and scholasfic compefifion. Our music deparfmenf has grown from fhe embryonic sfage fo a full-fledged, successful deparfmenf. H' is in fhe infangible, invisible field, however, fhaf we feel fhaf we have made mosf progress, and in which progress we fake greafesf pride and delighf. Physical equipmenf is necessary, and aids greafly in any school sysfemg buf unless fhere is presenf a good school spirif and morale, fhe producf of fhe school cannof be superior. Four years ago many of our schoolmafes had been in affendance in ofher good schools of fhe counfy, and if was buf nafural fhaf fheir allegiance fo fhis, fheir new school, would be shared wifh fheir firsf schools. As year followed year, we have been keenly aware of a chang- ing affifude foward our school, and P. l-l. S. is buiding a spirii' which we shall be proud fo call fradifional in fufure years. lf we refurn fo visif P. l-l. S. four years hence we hope fo see signs of sfill furfher pro- gress. We hope fo see fhe grading of fhe school grounds complefe, play ground equip- for fhe liffle folks insfalled, and a flag floafing from a new flag pole. We hope fo see bigger and beffer libraries, fhe walls beffer decorafed wifh picfures, new equip- menf in fhe various laborafories and deparfmenfs, and new seafing equipmenf gradually displacing fhe old. We hope, foo, fo find fhaf fhe splendid new building has been care- fully kepf, inside and oufside, by ifs occupanfs. Buf we hope, above all, fo find a loyal, enfhusiasfic sfudenf body upholding fhe fradifion of fhe fhree S's, school spirif, schol- arship, and sporfsmanship. i - i
