Elementary Principal DONALD E. MURPHY 10 St. Anselm's A. B. Your graduation from high school comes at a time in history when the opportunities for you to make a significant contribution to our society are all but un- limited. The unrest that seems to characterize the attitudes of so many young people today is largely being directed toward the adult population and the kind of world which you find difficult to accept. The result is frustration on your part, and this is understandable. But let me assure you that all people in all generations have experienced to some extent such frustration; it is part of the process of growing up. I can do no less than to encourage you to main- tain your ideals while, as the world revolves around practical solutions as well. Value your individuality but recognize the existence of your moral responsibility which is basic to the preservation of any ordered society. I urge you to accept the freedom which our society provides but accept also the fact that your responsibili- ties in the days to come will increase, as it has for those of us who are older, if you are to ensure the continuation of this freedom for your future children. It is, as it has always been, an imperfect world in which we live. The danger is that we tend to judge all adults by the few obnoxious individuals whose in- fluence can be seen in every element of society. Try to remember that we cannot judge all people by the distasteful actions of the few who always seem to attract more attention than the average law-abiding citi- zen. In the same manner, we should not misjudge all young people by the small vocal minority who strive for recognition and power at the expense of the many. I am greatly encouraged by the caliber of this year’s graduating class. You are better educated than your forefathers. You are more sensitive to human suffering and the inequities in our society and you are better equipped to challenge the future. But remember that you, too, will grow older and in a very few short years will probably be criticized for the world which you have established for the next generation. I sin- cerely believe, however, that the contribution which young people today are capable of making will result in a better life for all of us tomorrow. And school - it was so much fun - painting wonderful pictures and having ever so many friends. Every morning I'd wake up with anticipation, of course, I had some unhappy moments - the temporary kind that disappear with a piece of candy. I guess the first change came when I gave up hopscotch for homework. But I didn't mind; I felt so grown-up carrying books and explaining to everyone that I had to do my homework. That was sixth grade. I soon became bored with it, though. After all, I was already grown-up and didn't need books or homework to prove it. I drifted along, sometimes doing well and sometimes not. Occasionally I made the honor roll - that was special, having my name in the newspaper. High school and the guidance counselor brought a sudden end to my old ways. School. I learned, was to prepare me for the future and help me plan for my tomorrows. There was never enough time both to live the present and plan tomorrow. I chose to do the latter; I don't know why, exactly. College was the way, and anticipating financial troubles, I took a job. For college, I put aside unimportant little things that I enjoyed doing: listening to music, playing a guitar, taking walks. I should've been happy, but my head was full of worries. Sometimes I couldn't sleep - all that homework that had to be done but wasn't ... waking up mornings wishing to be seriously ill and to stay home, but then what of tomorrow? Later I had a sudden realization: I was planning blindly; there was no definite goal ahead. After some thinking I decided on a profession to pursue. I gave up my job and concentrated on school work with tremendous results. College is so near now, and it seems worth all the trouble. But every so often I stop and think about it all. All the headaches over school work, the things I gave up occur to me and then I have my doubts. What if I were to die on my way to school tomorrow? My tomorrow and all my beautiful plans, gone. Lucy Teixeira 57 Christmas Abstract colors of wrapping paper all over the floor. Dirty dishes with turkey, stuffing, and candy left on the dining room table. People chattering about the weather and how it seems they can’t get everything they want - (washers, dryers, new cars, mink coats, electric can openers, electric blenders, etc.) But as the Christmas day rolls on with shining ornaments, presents stacked to the ceiling, children running around scream- ing about their wondrous sur- prises ... 2 million Biafrans are starving, men are dying in a faraway country - fighting an undeclared war. Children of 4 families are playing in a 2-room apartment with rats running under the furniture and walls peeling on all sides. And still the All American cleans out his 2-car garage while his children are happily playing with toy machine guns and thinking how great life is. The paper tries to connect every student with what is happening in his school. The staff members hope the paper will be a source of pride for the whole school and continue into Con- Val. It is so far completely self-supporting. Interest in a school paper was sparked last November by students Kathy Petts and Ginny Gardner when they distributed questionnaires and started holding meetings. After the first issue was published, the name and the editors were chosen. Barry Cass and Eric Maloney were elected to do two issues apiece. The other editors were Ginny Gardner, assistant editor; Kathy Petts, literary editor; Kathy Chapman, business manager; Heather Peterson, activity editor; April Hammond and Marcia McKenna, art editors. The advisors are Mrs. June Tuttle, Mr. Kendall McCormack and Mrs. Mary Breton. 118 Pep Club High-Ho, High-Ho, It's Green we know. With a Fight-Fight-Fight, With all your might. Throughout the year, the student council has been working with Antrim High to make plans for Con- Val. We drew up and put into effect the school's first dress code. A committee of interested students has been meeting with teachers to propose ideas for Con-Val curriculum. We held three dances including a computer dance with Monadnock Regional and Antrim and a Christ- mas semi-formal with the Teen Advisory Council. Again we sent Christmas boxes to Vietnam. We were represented at the Wilton Winter Carnival, and delegates were sent to the Older Girls' and Boys' Conferences. With Antrim, we play to raise $1,000 to build a Peace Corps school in an under developed country. To raise money, we have had food and book sales, a dress down day, a fashion show, and the school store. Office Staff L-R: D. Whitney, B. Carlson, S. Leavitt, L. Conley, D. Smith, Mrs. Rainier. N.
