Marburger, Mr. Martinez, sponsor. Strove to Extend Cultural Knowledge Culturally supplementing their respective de- partments and encouraging an interest in for- eign languages, the French and Spanish Clubs aided students in speaking a foreign tongue. Learning of Latin American customs from a former PHS student, the Spanish Club as- sembled to hear a lecture given by Mike Mur- phy, who had previously been serving with the Peace Corps in Costa Rica. During the second semester, a new club member Iuan Lopez, who escaped from Cuba, aided student's fluency by conversing with the students in his native language. Fluency was also the principal aim of the French Club in the organizations first year at PHS. At the Christmas meeting the singing of carols prevailed as students learned that only through constant practice did their accents im- prove. Listening to recordings of their songs, the club worked to correct errors in pronunci- ation. With lectures, films, and discussions, members attempted to gain an improved un- derstanding of France and her people. Organizers of the newly formed French Club are Row D. LaCoss, I. Hill, R.
