New classrooms were moved into, and the gym was almost complet- ed. Our new and improved band played two concerts for us during the year and also played at graduation. For those who wanted to speak a foreign language, a Spanish class was added to the curriculum. It was easy to see that PHS was “Moving Towards New Horizons Right: Miss Garison, Wanda Brasier, Mrs. Hunt, and Robin Stone discussed their plans for Spirit Week. Above left: Football fans enjoyed a Friday night game. Left: Robert Dean. Scarla Ault. Michelle West, and Michelle Garrett watched a band concert. 3 Goals Were Set at PHS Looking toward new hor- izons not only meant getting into new buildings and receiving material things, but it also meant setting and reaching new goals. The administration set many goals throughout the year. They petitioned NCA and offered many new courses. The athletic teams set and reached goals as well. The varsity football team scratched a long losing streak by winning Homecoming. The senior boys’ basketball team did equally well by winning first round of the state regional tournament. The junior girls’ basketball team also made an impressive showing in the district tournament. It was easy to see that PHS was setting and achieving new goals. Right: Deanna Hawkins showed her spirit on Hunter Day. Brandon Jones gave a pep talk at a pep rally. Below Right: Derek Womack and Ricky Hoyt took a break from studies. Below: Ray and Mark Scott made their daily rounds. Bottom: The crowd cheered as the Cheerleaders threw candy. 8 Between Between the bell at Perryville High could be defined with a whole mass of different meanings. It was a time to gossip, get a drink, go to the locker, and meet with loved ones. It was also a time to do some last minute cramming for a next period test, feed your face and the Bell hope to make it to lunch, and just a free time to get away from teachers. If between the bell had to be shortly defined, it could be pretty well summed up as just a free time to do whatever could have been accomplished in five minutes. Below Left: A typical hall scene at break. Below: Chris Harmon did some last minute studying in the library. Left: Feeding their faces were Chance Grace, Nancy Cripps, and Jamie Brooks. Above: Lynn Syler, Shelley Barton, and Stephanie Bull took time to gossip. 9 Hawkins Reigned as Queen Deanna Hawkins reigned as Queen at Homecoming 1983. The queen and her court were pre- sented to the student body by members of the football team, at the afternoon Homecoming cer- emony which followed a week of Homecoming activities. Wanda Braiser, Kim Price, and Toni Trotter were elected maids from the senior class. Kathy Cripps and Kim Jackson served as the Junior maids. The soph- omores selected Karen Crawford and Laura Daniels to represent them. Freshmen maids Nancy Cripps and Jennifer Magie repre- sented their class. Eighth grade maid was Sandra Anderson and seventh grade maid was Tracy Short. The Mustangs beat Mayflower 14-6 in the Homecoming game. The Homecoming dance was well attended by P.H.S. students past and present. Right: Deanna Hawkins watched the pep rally during the morning ceremonies. Students had their own in- dividual ways of spending time before school and during lunch break. Some chatted with friends; while others gathered for music sessions. These sessions ranged from guitar playing to radio listening. It was evident that everyone needed a little leisure time to get through the day. Below: Judy Payne and Pam Short talked at lunch. Below Right: Scott Tarvin spent a lot of his time in his car. Right: Denise Spears watched her friends. 12 Left: Sandy Moore and Susan Windle gossiped with friends. They had to work diligently to put the final touches on the banquet and the prom. To everyone’s delight it was a success. The banquet was held in the cafeteria. The guest speaker was Chuck Dovish. The prom was held in the gym with a disc-jockey from a Little Rock radio station presid- ing. The king and queen for the prom were Mike Campbell and Wanda Brasier. They were cho- sen by the juniors and seniors. Top: Mike Campbell was the king of the prom, and Wanda Brasier was the queen Above: Robin Stone listened to the guest speaker. Left: Scott Tarvin and his date talked with classmates. 15 Thank Goodness It’s Friday When the weekend finally rolled around, everyone was excited about going to his favor- ite place. For many students at PHS, Morrilton seemed to be that place. The favorite pastime was to drive through McDonald's and to cruise up and down the highway. The Rialto Theater was another attraction. Little Rock, Conway, and Hot Springs probably came next with Charlie Goodnights, the malls, or just sight-seeing. No matter which place was chosen, students seemed to enjoy their weekend. Left: Wanda Brasier spoke to friends before graduation. 19 Mustang Mania Everyone goes crazy over his home team, and it’s no different at Perryville. The cheerleaders cheered, the M-Steppers danced, and the band played. The groups were not the only ones with enthusiasm. The fans went wild, too. They made signs, yelled cheers, and participated in various dress up days. Above: The M-Steppers showed their spirit while performing at a pep rally. The play was presented in the armory on April 19th. Props such as tents, jeeps, tables and other army accessories were donated by the National Guard. The cast consisted of 30 members. The play was under the supervision of Mr. Todd Rasmussen. Right: Deanna Hawkins and Gayla Butler discussed their problems as army nurses. The team won the first round of the tournaments by defeating Flippin with a score of 62 to 61. The boys lost the chance of competing in the finals by losing to a tough Fort Smith Christian School. Coach Echols had this com- ment about the team. “The senior high boys' bas- ketball team had a very interest- ing season. With three returning starters from a very good basket- ball team from the year before, a couple of good sophomores coming on, and three more returning lettermen, I was expect- ing great things. When it was all over, things had turned out good, not great. In the District Tournament, we coasted by Hector 79 to 53. In the next game, we faced a very good team, Pottsville, who had already beaten us twice previous- ly. We defeated Pottsville 55 to 46. We were on a roll. In the semi-finals, we faced Ola, who we had already beaten once soundly; but it wouldn’t be as easy this time. The final score was Perryville 53 Ola 44. This put us in the finals against an awesome Wonderview team, and also assured us of a trip to the Northwest Regionals at County Line. PHS leading in the early part of the game and down by three at halftime was beaten by Wonderview’s size and speed by a score of 64 to 45. In the Northwest Regionals, we faced Flippin who had a record of 38 wins and 5 losses. PHS played a super ballgame and won 62-61 on a last second shot by Jamie Chambliss. This put us in the semi-finals of the regionals playing a very good Fort Smith Christian team. A win against them assured us a trip to the State Tournament. They caught us on a very bad night. We ended the game shooting a poor thir- teen percent from the field. One can’t win shooting poor percent- age especially at a high level of competition. FSC won by a score of 78 to 59. This ended our season and dream of playing in the State Tournament.’’ Above left: Jamie Chambliss started the second half of the second round of the State Regionals. People really paid attention to feet last year. Most people wouldn’t be caught dead with- out their NIKES. Some were so worn; it looked as though they were at the Alamo. Others wore their trusty cowboy boots. These encounters of a required kind included four years of English, one year of physical education, two years of science, two years of social studies, and two years of math. Obviously, encounters of a required kind weren't exactly fascinating; but with field trips, senior skip day, and senior privileges, we managed to survive. The result was daydreaming. Daydream- ing can be fun, but it also can be harmful. Most of the teachers did not like the idea of a student daydreaming in class. Some people just drifted off without ever knowing it. Nobody really knew what a person daydreamed about. It might have been about his fantasy of being a millionaire when he got out of school, or maybe he daydreamed about a car that he only gets to drive while he is drifted off into his own universe. Style ranged from the way one ate, talked, walked, and dressed. Each student seemed to have his own style. There were the punks, the preppies, guys with earrings and many new hair styles. Some practices only came once a year, such as homecoming, graduation, and play practice. The band practiced daily so they would be prepared to perform at all the home football games. The first band at PHS was in the 1940's. Mrs. Brenda Tiner, band director, started in 1980 in elementary with a recorder band which has now ad- vanced to an instrumental band. Throughout the year, the band participated in several functions. They rallied students during pep rallies, entertained fans at the Homecoming game, performed for club organizations in town, marched the Seniors to graduation, and gave a Christmas and Spring concert for the student body.
