:ember 5, 1955, Mr. E.W. Cook, Superin- id faculty together and another school year BELOW: These upper-classmen are around the school dupli- cator a popular machine--They could be running out programs for the senior play. ABOVE: Seniors stand in line to pay the class treasurer for what?? It might be for annuals, or pictures, or any of a doz- en other items. DEDICATION MR. R. E. MITCHELL With sincere appreciation for the ad- mirable qualities of our principal who died in the service of his chosen profession, we dedicate this yearbook to the memory of Mr. R. E. Mitchell. He had been with us for five years, but the 1955-56 school year had meant much more to him than had previous ones. This year he felt the weight of more than classroom teaching. The entire faculty looked to him for guidance. With the support of our superintendent Mr. E. W. Cook, and his teaching staff, he had really tackled the job of blending a restless group into smooth-running team- work. Both faculty and students seemed to have a common goal --a good school year. Then death struck. Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1955, marked his passing. A heart that had worked overtime to make P.H.S. a better school has stopped beating. His life will be an inspiration to those of us who remain; and should he speak to us, we knowhe would say: Keep striving for that common goal. Finish the job we started to- gether. 2 FOREWORD office clock (Old Faithful) and the school's activity calendar. The former has helped to tick off the hours of the school day, and the latter has marked the major events of the sch- ool year. Therefore wc think it fitting to take them with us through the pages of this book, for they are as much a part of the event as the event itself 1 ■Dear Readers, when it is time for lei- sure hours of reminiscing, we hope this fifth volume of the Mustang will bring pleasant mo- ments as you read of the happenings at P. H. S. during the school year of 1955-56. This school year has been an unusual one, mixed with both laughter and tears, filled with both work and play. We have felt rather close to the old deadline ibling juniors stomach ntan's heart is through cherm •ntisl® future tonight Mustangs Time At the left is our pri - ncipal who proudly re - presents our effic - ient ad- ministration. One of the f e w mo - ments of re - taxation for our hard working fac- ulty is lunch- time. This is a typical per- iod in Mrs. Wallace 's biology class. II A dramatic scene from the Sr. play - one of the activities enabling pupils to wo- rk together. TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION FACULTY CLASSES ACTIVITIES ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE Freedom to think was firmly fixed in the American Bill of Rights. It is basic to all other freedoms. Freedom of speech is vacuous unless there is something to say. Freedom of press is an empty privilege unless there is something to write. Free- dom of assembly is futile without intelligent discussion. American freedom of worship, freedom of enterprise, trial by jury-all the freedoms and rights guaranteed in our organic documents and secured by more than a century-and-a-half of tradition- would be on a precarious footing indeed if a system of thought-control were imposed upon those who must pass judgment upon whether these freedoms are jeopardized or abridged. These are uncertain times in America. Our ability to withstand the menace of com- munism may well depend upon how well we have prepared ourselves to make intelligent decisions in public affairs. PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Each time a yearbook is published, another group has reached the top round on the ladder. To graduate from high school is truly a great accomplishment. To the senior class I wish to congratulate you on your success and wish you the best of life's rewards. Mr. E. W. COOK, Superintendent Mr. LAMBERT WALLACE Principal BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Mr. J. H. This year the senior class drew up the ballots, and in November, the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students elected the ten couples you see here. It is hard for the pupils to make decisions for their favorites, because there is an abun- dance of talent and worthy traits among all of the students. 33 ¥T mri rM vi : af:«rr ri -m 1 jQf z 3 t 4 .-Ju J 6 7 2 9 to 11 1Z 13 14 15 ie 17 12 19 Zo Zl zz £4 Z5 Z6 Z7 Z9 Z9 30 MOST POPULAR: Jimmy Wroten Iona Marcum Hep cats?
