Young The addition of many new features by the 1940 annual staff make this BLACK ANIJ GOLD one of the outstanding yearbooks of P. H. S. The return to engraving is an important improve- ment. For the first time the opening section of the book is in two colors. Modern treatment of the senior panels, the class seals and ribbons, the novel cartoons, and the variety of type face-all combine to form an attractive yearbook. The senior direc- tory, another new feature, improves the appearance of the senior section. Many snapshots of student activities add to the informality of the book. Circulation was increased by the use of install- ment cards and by the printing of the cash sub- scribers' names on the annual covers. The 1940 BLACK ANIJ GOLD will be entered in the National Scholastic Press Assoeiatioifs All- Ameriean Critical Service for Yearbooks. I I . . i ,Q tt ,5 . S. has experienced, but it was outstanding in time teamwork and spirit. Each mem- ber of the squad showed willingness to cooperate in every way possible with the new coach, Dale Kuhlman. The graduation of eleven senior lettermen will weaken the jacket ranks for next year. Among the outstanding graduates are lrv johnson, varsity end and high scorer for four years, Holm Marriott, four-year letterman, considered the lmest kicker ever to play for Perryslwurgg Ed XYamlmold, 1939 captain and quarter backg and Warren Byington, varsity center, who played every minute of every contest for the past two seasons. Fifty-one candidates, five of them lettermen reported for spring practice. However, the lack of experienced reserves proved fatal. ln the last five minutes the Bulldogs scored twice to win. llelta 6 Perryshurg 7 Over-confidence accounted for this scant 1-point victory over a team the jackets should have heaten very decisively. johnson scored on an end-around play in the second quarter. An intercepted pass enabled Delta to score, hut they were unahle to make the extra point. Sylvania ll l'erryshurg 6 Sylvania was slated to win this hattle, hut the jackets proved their worth hy upsetting all pre- dictions. johnson scored on a 35-yard pass from Marriott. The Wildcats could not get within the Perryshurg 20-yard line during the entire game. t iff HTF .g Us .. 'Fl t s V87 ill itll A A . .45.. Genoa ll Perryshurg l4 Playing their finest game of the season, the llerryshurg eleven completely outsmarted Genoa. Both touchdowns were the result of many run- ning plays. Genoa threatened to score only once, hut a fumhle on the 2-yard line snufied out the chance. liossford 21 l'erryshurg 0 f'erryshurg didn't seem to he ahle to get going against their old rival. Perhaps Friday the 13th had something to do with the failure of plays to work, punts heing hlocked, and the lack of drive hy the whole team. Whitmer 7 Perryshurg 7 Marriott's scoring in the tirst three minutes of play was not enough to defeat the hard-fighting Nkhitmer squad. Xkhitmer scored on hard, line-smashing plays in the third quarter. The jackets were ahle to get to the opponents' 10-yard line, hut lacked the drive to put the hall over the goal. Howling Green 7 Perryshurg 0 Lucky hreaks for Bee Gee and a-few had plays hy llerryshurg were determining factors in this loss. The jackets got as lar as the 12-yard line, hut a fumhled pass ruined the chance to score. Although the liohcats were in scoring position several times, the jackets allowed them to score only once. Napoleon 6 Perryshurg 14 lrv johnson proved to he Napoleorfs Nlaterloo when he scored hoth touchdowns for l'erryshurg, one on a pass, and the other on an end-around play. Napoleon's touchdown came as the result of a long completed pass. Maumee IZ l'erryshurg fl ln the annual Armistice llay game the jackets were completely outplayed hy their oldest rivals, the Maumee Panthers. With several regulars on the hench, the Panthers were ahle to score two touchdowns in quick succession to give them their victory. BUCKHOUT REDMAN 19 Don Buekhout, Tackle Varsity 3, Junior Injuries slowed Buckie up in a few of this season's contests, but he could always hold a regular position. His third year on the varsity was much superior to his two previous seasons. Bill Redman, Guard Varsity 2, Junior Bill was a quiet boy on the held, but Actions speak louder than words. He was responsible for many of the losses sustained by the opponents. Louis Vislay, Guard Varsity l, Junior Although Louie started the season rather mildly, by the fourth game he was warmed up. Against Genoa he got 50 percent of the tackles, and from then on his defensive work was very good. VISLAY I Irv Johnson, End Varsity 4, Senior Irv made most of the team's touchdowns via the end-around play. His speed made him a hard man to overtake after he had caught the pigskin, He will be hard to re- place next year. Tony Richards, Tarkle Varsity l, Senior A Fine tackler and blocker, Tony put all he had into his game. His team spirit was an inspiration to every member of the squad. Bud Kistler, Back Varsity 2, Senior Small but mighty, Bud liked the game and played hard all the time. He could always hc counted on to go into any competition and do his best. Bud's earnestness and willingness made him one of Perrys- burg's Finest players. Paul Kopp, End Varsity 3, Junior Koppie barely tipped the scales at 145. but very few plays could get around his end. He was able to sense the opponent plays, and usually managed to break them up. lion Byington, Back Varsity 3, Junior Don started the season as regular guard, but was switched to full back, where his driving power enabled him to make many gains. P. H. S. is expecting a lot from lion next year. CRYAN NY. BYINGT jim Cryan, Bark Varsity 1, Senior Playing his first year as a regular, Jimmy appeared to be nervous in some games. He played his best at Genoa, where he made several long runs. Few enemy passes were completed in jim's territory. VVarren Byington, Center Varsity Z, Senior Shifted from tackle to center this year. VVarren played his new position very well He was considered one of the best tacklers on the team. Bob Marriott, Bark Varsity 4, Senior Rah, one of the few players to make the varsity his freshman year, played an important role in all victories by his educated toe and his able passing. ON MARRIOTT .wmfqg The Yellow jackets started off the 1939-40 season by defeating the Pemberville five 41 to 36. lt looked like a good season ahead, but the following three games were lost to Clay, 38 to 195 Rossford, 36 to 17, and Central, 37 to 27. ln a return game with Pemberville the local boys lost after two exciting overtime periods, with the final score being 34 to 32. The second game with Clay saw the enemies again defeat the Jackets, this time by a 36 to 30 verdict. lJeVilbiss handed Perrysburg another 32 to 22 lacing the following week. The Perrysburg squad played their best game of the season against their closest rivals, the Maumee Panthers, and snowed them under with a 33 to 14 win. Not so successful against another close rival, the Rossford Bulldogs, the jackets were repulsed by a 36 to 17 count. llefiance and Kenton won over Perrysburg by 31 to 20, and 35 to 15 scores, respectively, but the following week, the home team re- turned to the win column by pounding out a 44 to 22 win over the hapless Sylvania quin- 161. They should be taught the difference between necessities and non-necessities, expensive and inexpensive items, and when to make seasonal purchases. Many articles used in everyday life are pur- chased on a payment plan, and it is extremely important that the purchaser learn to dis' tinguish between finance plans, particularly as to rates. Our company welcomes such an investigation. FINANCIAL SECURITIES CORPO RATION c. H. SPECK, President 331 Erie Street Toledo, Ohio -54- Compliments of SHELL SERVICE STATION Carl Potratz, Mgr.
