Iarvis A.B., Franklin College MA., Indiana University Chemistry 1935 The students and faculty of P.H.S. are fortunate to have Mr. Iarvis as their adviser and executive. His efficiency in directing the Perrysburg school system has been an important factor in making it a superior educational institution. Having entered Perrysburg High School the year in which Mr. Iarvis became superintendent, the seniors have witnessed the adoption of more modern methods of education. The establishment of the shop department, regular health classes, and visual education provided by the recently installed moving picture projector have been the result of the efforts of Mr. Iarvis. By his direction and attention he has made students aware of the opportunities available to them. As cr superintendent and instructor, Mr. larvis has cultivated a fuller realization of the importance of cooperation- the keyword in the interdependent World of Tomorrow. 4 Q , O. C. The name Trylon, one of the Words of Tomorrow coined for the New York World's Fair, is a combination of the word tri, meaning three, and pylori, meaning a monumental gateway. The Trylon is the World's Fair beacon and broadcasting tower. lt is especially significant that this term is applied to the present senior class. Three qualities characterize them - fellowship, leadership, and scholarship. The Trylons have been the beacon and broadcasting tower of P. H. S. They are capable gateways to the World of Tomorrow. Every phase of the Trylons' activities has centered around their goal, the trip to the New York World's F air. A Thanksgiving sports dance, two marion- ette shows, two movies, and a riotous donkey basketball game helped to raise the necessary capital. The class also sponsored a series of interclass basketball games. The senior cafeteria, which extended over a period of three months, was the means of earning the largest sum. The fund was also increased by the aid of the mothers, who cooperated in the sponsoring of a bake sale, a doughnut sale, and a benefit card party, The guidance of Miss Brentlinger and Mr. Barber, the class advisers, has been an important factor in making the trip possible. .W . Perispheres is a title especially suitable to the junior class, for after three years in high school they realize their interdependence and the part they are taking in building the Per- rysburg of Tomorrow. In their freshman year, as a class of 88 they sponsored a convocation program and a dance. Robert Marriott was president, Robert Dibling, vice-presidentp Bernard Schwind, secretary- treasurer. As sophomores the class was in charge of a convocation and presented several one-act ,.,... .,.,, vt, . . .Frith H 'ffilfl -- I H if Hit? fly ,gh -wg 'ml fr-5 wr. A similar honor went to four boyswho were elected to the Hi-Y. In April the Perispheres gave a dance for the entire school. The officers for this year were Robert Dibling, president, Grace Mills, vice-president, Robert Wagoner, secretary: and. Bernard Schwind, treasurer. Now reduced to 70 members, the Perispheres have spent an active year. The annual Christ- mas dance and the Armistice Day convocation were given by them. Wishing to aid the Trylons in attaining their desired trip to the Fair, the class held a bake sale and sponsored a movie and two after-game dances. Advisers for the class were Miss Young and Mr. Huffman. 1 if it ' ,. :aft - fzf ' i . . A , 9 :sl I 1. SECRETARY-TREASURER Chcrla Eckel is W .q u .i '.::, A 5.3 Qifgps. N if Vg 5' 1: in -n : .. , ,. Since the sopho- mores naturally expect to rise to the level of juniors, Heliclines seems a fitting name for them. By their pep and leadership they have won a secure position in the school, and should be capable leaders during the next two years. The class officers in the freshman year were lohn Zachrnan, president, Paul Sargent, vice- L1- ,. Under the able leadership of their sponsors, Mr. Golding and Miss Suter, the Heliclines this year sponsored several successful activities. It is applied to the fountains located on the Wor1d's Fair grounds. The Aqualon at the base of the Perisphere seems to support the entire theme center. The freshmen are similar to the Aqualon because, bubbling over with en- thusiasm and spirit, they are a constant source of energy for our school. The Aqualons this year held a Weiner roast and sponsored a very entertaining Thanksgiving convocation. STUDENT LIBRARIANS This year the number of books, magazines, and newspapers available to students was greatly increased. With the aid ol the W.P.A. book-binding unit, new books were catalogued and Worn books were repaired. Mr. Munger supervised the project. The librarians, appointed for each study hall by the teacher in charge, issue books and mag- azines and see that they are put in their proper places when returned. It is also the duty of the librarians to maintain order in the library. Each bus driver selects for each of his trips one person who lives near the end of the route. This person is called the bus patrolman. lt is his duty to escort smaller children in and out of the bus, to get the numbers ot motorists violating the law, to keep a record ot the bus passengers, and to see that they are orderly. At the Christmas convocation the dramatic group presented Mr. Everyman, a fifteenth century miracle play. The Pulitzer Prize play, You Can't Take lt with You, was presented before two capacity audiences at the Farmers' Institute in February. P. H. S. was the first school in Ohio to produce this Broadway hit and successful movie. Another Broadway production, Fly Away Home, by Bennett and White, was chosen for the senior play, to be presented during Commencement week. The extremely wholesome theme of this play stressing the need for parental guidance during adolescent years is expressed in the old nursery rhyme: Lady Bug, Lady Bug, fly away home. A fairly successful qrid season Was exper- ienced, in spite of the bad start. The Yellow Iackets' standing for the 1938-39 season Was three defeats, four ties, and two Wins. The lack of a running and passing attack to match a very brilliant defense was responsible for the defeats. Playing in better competition for the first time, the boys of P. H. S. showed a very fine brand of football. From the underclassmen ranks, a fairly re- spectable list of qridiron candidates has been assembled for next fall. Let us hope they fill the shoes of their predecessors in a manner to warrant Perrysburq High a stable position in the sports world. Assistant Coach Golding Coach Sheffer Faculty Mgr. Mr. Treece FOOTBALL COACHES RESUME OF DEFIANCE-13 PERRYSBURG-0 The Yellow lackets opened the season at Defiance under the lights. During the scoreless first half both teams played on even terms. However, the P. H. S. boys, handicapped by lack of reserves, could not maintain the pace. The Defiance Bulldogs forced over two touchdowns. DELTA--7 PERRYSBURG--0 Displaying a lack of drive, enthusiasm, and every essential necessary for a winning team, the lackets played their poorest game of the season at Delta. VAN WEHT-13 PERRYSBURG-0 After the setback at Delta, a determined squad traveled to Van Wert and played its finest game of the year. Again the lack of reserves proved disastrous. The Iackets held the Van Wert team, which went through the season undefeated, to the lowest score of the year. WHITE-7 PERRYSBURG-7 The Waite gridders came to Perrysburg expecting an easy victory. The lackets disappointed them by outplaying the Toledo team at every stage in the game. Only a lucky break enabled Waite to gain a tie. ROSSFORD-0 PERRYSBURG-7 This season the Iackets by trouncing Rossford accom- plished a feat attempted by nine successive P. H. S. teams. Rossford penetrated into Perrysburg territory only once, and was continually hard pressed to keep the swarming Yellow THE SEASON Iackets from surging over its goal line. Rudolph Henman emerged as the hero of the game by scoring the only touchdown made on an intercepted Rossford pass. WHITMER-0 PERRYSBURG-0 A slightly overconfident Perrysburg team faced the Whit- mer Indians on the local field. This confidence was quickly dispelled as the Whitmer boys outplayed the Yellow Iackets in every position. Nevertheless, P. H. S. managed to hold the Redskins to a scoreless tie. BOWLING GREEN-6 PERRYSBURG-6 On October 28 the Yellow Iackets traveled to Bowling Green to renew the ancient rivalry between the two schools. Although the game ended in a tie, the Perrysburg fans regarded the outcome as a moral victory. NAPOLEON-0 PERRYSBURG-13 The lackets earned their second victory of the season by defeating the Napoleon Corporals. The most spectacular performance of the evening was contributed by Iohnson, who intercepted a Napoleon pass and ran 80 yards for the first Perrysburg touchdown. MAUMEE-0 PERRYSBURG-0 The Perrysburg boys engaged in the most important game of the season at Maumee. Although scoring threats were numerous, neither team was able to provide the final punch. When the smoke cleared away, the records revealed ten P. H. S. first downs to a total of none for the Panthers. 'WWW XQPNFEX . lf, V law 4,-1 1. The Perrysburg Yellow Iackets entertained a successful season as tar as certain individuals were concerned, but from the standpoint of early predictions, the season was disappointing. It was perhaps the toughest schedule that the Yel- low lackets have ever undertaken. Some of the best teams in the state were played, and always the locals came up with a good ball game, win or lose. The P. H. S. cagers won eight games against ten defeats. The two most outstanding victories were over the Rossford Bulldogs and the Bowling Green Bobcats. With an abundance of new material for the coming season, the Yellow Iackets are expected to be strong opposition. These high- school sophisticates decided to forfeit the annual banquet and dance given by the juniors for a trip to the New York World's Fair. They began to arouse public opinion favorable to the plan and started off on a series of money-making projects. Student participation was recorded by means of bar graphs. The first enterprise was a cafeteria, which ex- tended from December to February. W.P.A. women were employed to prepare the food, and the seniors themselves acted as cashiers and waitresses. During this time the class also sponsored a movie, Too Hot to Handle, at the local theatre, which netted S47.50. Two marion- ette shows, Hansel and Gretel and SnoW White and the Seven Dwarfs, added S44 to the fund. The Perrysburg merchants and most of the faculty men cooperated in making the donkey basketball game a great success. Surprising shots and spills added to the merriment. This venture earned S88 for the class. The entire high school joined forces to play interclass basketball games after school. On the same night the tournament ended, the town mer- chants played a game to determine the winner of the Little Brown Iug. Wishing to aid the class in its project, the mothers of the seniors spent one Saturday frying doughnuts, which the senior boys delivered. Altogether, 540 dozens were sold. During Easter vacation the People's Market provided the seniors the opportunity to make an additional S75 by working in the store for a percentage of their sales. The card party, man- aged.by the mothers, yielded more than Sl00. The making of the required basic sum of S1000 enabled each senior paying the small fee of S15 to go on the trip.
