CLASS HISTORY I CHAPTER ONE Early in September, 1931, one hundred twenty-five inexperienced but expect- ant students gathered at the beautiful, new high school as Freshmen. Many were lost, and even the bravest and wisest were puzzled in getting situated. However, with the capable guidance of Miss Wahl, Mr. Bachman, and Mr. Ger- ber, the sponsors, we finally did get settled and elected these officers: RICHARD WELLSTEAD .r...,...,,,,.,,,,,,,rr,..........,,.,.--,,, President VIRGINIA ZACHMAN ,.,.,, .---- V ice-President DONALD HALBERT ,,,..,r r,,,,.,,, S ecretary ROBERT ANDERSON ...... Student Council Representative At last our first year was over and we were released for a few months of vaca- tion and rest from our very worthwhile labors. CHAPTER TWO Now in September, 1932, the class again assembled for the second year of higher knowledge. We found that our number had dwindled to ninety-six. Although we were unques- tionably saddened by this tragedy, we had a very successful and eventful year. Only one more year until we should receive those all important . parchments. How happy we were, yet how sad! Early in the Spring, Alma Reitz and D. Ruth Sage were elected to the Na- tional Honor Society. CHAPTER FOUR ln the fall of the year 1934 seventy-four students gathered for the fourth year of our high school life. we had passed through three years of hard work and pleasure together, and we were ready for the last. Social Chairman All we have left now is the fond memory of pleasant experiences. We have striven against difficultiesp we have pushed aside many obstaclesp we feel that our year has been very worthwhile: and our thoughts sadden as we realize that the best, dearest years of our life are over. Yet we can look forward to many more if we will remember the spirit we employed before we were graduated from Perrysburg High School. We have the world before us-it is up to us from now on whether or not we shall attain success. M it .4 . r I I CLASS PROPHECY It was in the spring of the year 1943. I had spent four years in college, one year of leisure, and three years abroad, this trip being my finest graduation present. Not many graduates had been given a gift such as I received and I began to realize how fortun- ate I was. The boat was about a hundred miles from New York Harbor and as I stood gazing at the water someone tapped me on the shoulder and asked, Pardon me, but aren't you Rock Cummings? Turning around I recognized my classmate, Paul Harbauer. As we talked together, Paul informed me that he had been traveling in China gather. ing material for his next set of books on The Yellow Race. Well, Paul, I said, Have you heard of the destinations of any of our graduating class of '35? Well, yes, I have heard of a few, he said. I met Wilberta Reed while in China. She is teaching a class of Chinese children. Ruth Wygant also visited China in order to find material for the preparation of some lectures which she intends to give on her return to the United States. Then, too, there are two of our classmates working for a picture Company there. They are Lucille Voland and Freda Morgan. These pictures are made exclusively for the United States. We continued talking for what seemed to be only a few minutes, but must have been close to two hours, for the next thing I remember we were entering New York Harbor. After I had bade Paul goodbye, I began thinking about our meeting. How glad I was to have seen him, and just where were our other classmates? What could they be do- ing? I finally decided to devote some of my time to discovering just as many of them as I could. After my passport papers had been cleared, I hailed a taxi. Immediately I heard a fa- miliar voice say, Taxi, Sir. As I glanced up whom should I find as the taxi driver but Glenn Burdo. He recognized me also and asked me where I wished to go. I told him to just drive around New York and tell me of as many of our classmates as he could. Glenn began by informing me that our friend Robert Anderson was now owner of a hotel there in New York and that he and his wife operated the place by themselves. His wife's name was Hazel Holcombe, also of our class. Bob Kille, he continued, is appearing at the Roxy Theatre as a comedian, having as his stooge, Katherine Lindsay, who adds to his success immensely. Claude Van Gunten drives a large van from New York City to Toledo, he said. D. Ruth Sage is accompanist for many famous radio artists and may be heard over WABC frequently. With this welcome news from my friend I felt very happy. It suddenly occurred to me, however, that I had been riding just one hour and that my fare was now an even two dollars. Realizing that walking would be much cheaper, I' paid my fare and bade Glenn farewell. Slightly feeling the need of food, I set out to find a restaurant. Shortly a sign came into my view. It read: Henning's Lunch Room. Could it be possible that this was my friend Isabelle? Hurriedly I entered and sat down. Presently a tall, graceful girl appeared before me asking, What will you have, please ? At once she recognized me, and I her. As soon as I had eaten Isabelle began telling me all she knew of the class of '35. Mary Lober, she began, is a teacher of French in one of the large New York high schools. Mary Bays is also a teacher in the same school, teaching Home Economics and acting as worthy sponsor of the Girl Reserves. Where is your chum, Ruth Hahn? I asked, remembering how inseparable they had been at school. Ruth is touring Europe at present, she continued, having the leading role in the Ballet Chorus. I--I+ Gene Griss is announcer at WABC and has full charge of the 'Kiddies' Iamboree' here in New York. ' Dorothy Lees, Ethel Keppler, and Aileen Cookson may also be heard over this sta- tion. They go under the name ofthe 'Chatter Cheats' and are under contract to Super- Suds. . hu.- Wanna- ni ...ina ... ,, 7 ,, A Yx.- ,,,, ,, i..u.mT CLASS PROPHE-CY Ralph Seiling and Charles Redman are partners in a wallpaper store just around the corner, and have as their salesman, Perkins Henry. . That is about all I remember of our class, said Miss Henning. Thanking her for the in- formation I again returned to the street. Before long another sign came into my sight: Madam Pvokii-Fortune Teller. If anyone could help me this woman certainly could. I entered, and telling her the nature of my call she began: I see Byford Death in Los Angeles training a revue of chorus girls for a stage pro- duction. Over at one side of the stage I see his wife, who plays the piano at rehearsals. Her name, she continued, was, before her marriage, Arthella Britten. Now I see a young lady lecturing to a college class on 'The Importance of Educa- tion.' Mary Cranker is her name. Another of your classmates, Stanley Huffman, is pro- fessor of history in the same college. As I gaze into the Crystal Ball, I see two botanists. They are trying desperately to grow an apple tree producing red apples in mid-winter. Their names are Vernon Snyder and Robert Brown. Ursula Kotowski and Francis Kaltenmark are busy at work writing musical comedies to appear in Chicago next year. Betty Wiechel is art editor for 'College I'Iumor,' contributing much to the success of the magazine. Now I see a young man who is still short but mighty. He devotes his time to a comic strip which appears daily in the 'Toedo Blade.' His name, Don Mericle. Here is a coincidence, the two Kazmaier boys of your class, Paul and Frederick, are managing an antique shop in Perrysburg. The collection is one of the most unusual in Northwestern Ohio. A strange feeling came over me when Madame Pvokii mentioned Perrysburg, the town where all our friendships and good times form a memory which will stay in our hearts for years to come. I Are there any other classmates of '35 who stayed in Perrysburg? I asked. Yes, she answered. Here I see a jewelry shop located in Main street, and being successfully operated by Albert Liebherr, who discovered his ability to repair watches through a large time-piece he possessed in high school. CI was informed later that this watch was now owned by Kazmaier's Antique Shop.l Adeline Sass owns an interior decorating shop and gives advice and plans for the re- modeling of many old Perrysburg residences. Nelda Limmer is now giving dancing lessons to school children. Her classes meet twice a week in the high school gym. Charles Dowling is town marshal and has as his two deputies, Robert Heckler and Bratche Webster. As she talked, I seemed to have heard her voice somewhere before. Now I was sure I had. That is about all l can see at present, she explained, but I have a confession to make myself. I am also a member of the class of '35. As she removed her headdress I could see it was none other than Pauline I-Iolkovic. I find my work very interesting, said Pauline, and a fairly easy way to make my living. I Thanking the Madam, I bade her adieu. It was now 9:00 P. M., New York time. l de- cided to leave immediately for my native state-Ohio. As I arrived at Union Station, the train for Ohio was just leaving. I inquired as to the next train, and finding there was none to leave until the next daY I realized The lhiflq for me to do was to travel by plane. l had never cared much about taking both feet off the ground at once, but with Lyonel Eckel as the capable pilot, I felt somewhat relieved. As soon as I had stepped into the plane two air hostesses came to me and asked if I was quite comfortable. Looking up, I recognized them. Two girls who were as insepar able as they were in our high school days. They were Gladys Schramm and Evelyn Schusterj - .....f.- - ., 4, Jl J I I V I I r v -30- CLASS PROPHECY Glancing at my watch I discovered it was midnight. Being rather tired of reading, l walked up to Lyonel and asked him if he had found any of the gang lately. He said he had and promised to tell me of as many as he knew, as we passed over the different cities in which they had settled. .I was very glad to know that the plane in which I was flying made a round trip, therefore permitting us to pass over Washington, D. C, We are now passing over Philadelphia, said our pilot. Lyle Shneider is telegrapher at the airport, here. Donald Halbert spends much of his time at the airport and is really quite good at fancy parachute jumping. Muriel Emmitt also lives in this city and spends much of her time writing novels. Before long, lwas informed that the next city of interest was Washington, D. C.l learned that William Schwind operated a Souvenir Shop close to the Capitol. Also that Mae Keller and Inez Finch had published se veral small books dealing with Women and Government. Ama Beitzf' continued Lyonel, seems to be doing very well in her fight against tax- ation. She represents the average housewife of the United States and hopes to releive them of this burden of taxation soon. It was not long before we were in Ohio-Mour native state. Our first town of importance was Columbus. May Smithers is attending Ohio State University, making an extensive study of Psychology. Gpal Schaller is well-known in this city for her winning basketball team. At lO:OO A. M. the plane landed at the Toledo Trans-Continental Airport. I was very glad to find a few of our classmates employ ed here. I found that Dolores Eckel was sec retary to the president of the Airport, who was none other than Gordon Burkhart. Also that in the summer time, when riding is a pleasure, Glenn Beither did very well in talk ing them into a ride. Finding that I knew no one else here, I called a taxi and before long I was in the town I love so much - -Perrysburg. Trying to determine where I could find most of my classmates, Ifinally decided to buy a Perrysburg Iournalf' As soon as I obtained a copy I began reading. I was surprised to find that Shirley By- ington was now editor, having as her news reporter, Maribel Van Scoder. Beading the news appearing on the front page, I discovered a very familiar name, Kenneth Stanford, who is singing hill-billy songs over WSPD, Toledo. Here I see the Who's Who of Perrysburgu is nearly ready for distribution, and has been edited by Helen Mandell and Virginia Zachman. I see that Marcella Kellermeier and Katherine Hillabrand are in full charge of this year's Cooking' School, sponsored by the Perrysburg lournal. As I read farther, I see that all recipes used at these classes, will be taken from Mary Bazavik's latest cook book, The Art of Cooking. I turned the page and found numerous advertisements. The first to meet my eyes was a picture of a new Dodge. Beading the ad, I find Robert Bench is now salesman for the Cummins Motor Sales. Whose large ad could this be? All Branches of Beauty Work- Moderate Prices. Oh, yes, operated by Helen Black. Here we have a Nickel Lunch for school children, having as its manager, Luella Bostdorf. Get Your Dictionary from Greene's Book Store are the lines which now meet my eyes. There is no doubt but what Melvin Greene is the proprietor. I guess that concludes all the names which I know in this paper. I start to walk down Main Street. I see little change in its appearance. But wait-what is that bell that sounds so familiar? Of course! It's the school bell. It sounds so good to me. I would give anY' thing to be back there again. Such good times as we all enjoyed there, now but a mem- ory. But what is this I see before me? Yes, it is. Richard Wellstead helping the kiddies across the street. And down on the other corner is Ioe Lehman. Those children need not fear as long as these young men direct traffic. Night was drawing near and I decided to return home. As I left Perrysburg, I was very proud to think that I had graduated with such a fine group of young men and women. Not all my classmates were known nationally, but each had developed his own ambition in such a way that his life had been made a successf-Bock Cummings. This society has proven to be a great inspiration 10 the student body and elevates the school standards, for each student desires to attain membership in this society, which is considered the greatest honorary distinction given by the school. Enrollment is limited to students who are conspicuously outstanding in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Perrysburg High School has held membership in this national society for ten years, and within this time has enrolled seventy-five members. Each year the faculty elect five per cent of the lunior class and ten per cent of the Senior class as members. The honored members of the l935 class are: D. The Perrysburg High School library consists of upwards of 1063 volumes ranging through all the general Q heads of the Dewey System. l The past school year witnessed an innovation in the libraray here, with the presentation by the Class of '34, of several volumes, among which are the following titles: The Standard Book of British and American Verse. The Life of Samuel lohnson-Boswell. A The Medeci--G. F. Young. Wuthering Heights-Bronte. Only Yesterday-Allen. LIBRARIANS + U- Q HI-Y GIRL RESERVES The Girl Reserves are lunior and Senior girls who possess high standards of char- acter and scholarship. Their aim is to aid in the advancement of all the vital interests of girls, in terms of social, economic, intellectual, moral, and spiritual welfare, through a development of companionship, leadership, and fineness of character. Not all of our efforts, however, center inside the school. We have also assisted the community in various ways, such as, distributing literature concerning the school levy, sponsoring the Red Cross Drive, and entertaining the Welfare children with a Christmas party. We owe our success, not only to the splendid cooperation of the members, but also to the untiring efforts of Miss Forsythe, our sponsor, who has guided the club to its success. NORTHWESTERN EISTEDDFOD 'I' -49. --f -A ----'-1- O R C S Each year shows the development of Mr. Gerber's work as director of Perrysburg High School Orchestra. The Orchestra of thirty-one musicians includes several players who have had much experience in school music. The success of the High School Orchestra is largely due to the fact that Mr. Gerber has a lunior Orchestra to give pupils training in advance for the Senior High School Orchestra. Good music is becoming a tradition in P. H. S. The Orchestra stands ready for all occasions. It serves both the school and the community. They are available for tree ser- vices of smaller groups taken from the Orchestras: such as a reed quartet, brass quartet, and occasional trios, duets, and soloists. We do not know of a school in this part of the state that engages in more contest work in music than Perrysburg High School. The reason for this has been Mr. Gerber's desire to take an active part in the most phenomenal change that has ever come to secondary education, which is no other than the advancement made in school music. Mr. Gerber's ambitions areshared by his pupils. The Orchestra alone is making ten entries in the l935 music contestsg the whole Orchestra is in a contest, and out of the Orchestra are en- tered two ensembles and seven soloists. Win or lose in these contests, the young musicians gain so much through concentration of effort in preparing for the contests that the result is sure to be a great victory. Coach Sheffer has, however, gained the good will of the boys in the athletic department, and the admiration of all the students of the school. In another year we are confident that the Coach and the boys will show us what real suc- cess means. Doc Canfield-Assistant Coach and trainer. Doc was of great assistance during our football season this year. He helped whip the green material into shape and did much in the Way of teaching the basis fundamentals of the game to the beginners. Everyone appreciates Doc's service and interest in our athletic team and many a bump dicln't feel so bad when he was around to administer first aid to the boys. Mr. Treece. Faculty Manager-Mr. Treece showed great interest in our athletic teams this year. In addition to his regular duties as Manager he also helped out with the coaching during the football season. Vtlhen he made a suggestion the boys made an honest attempt to carry out the plan. Mr. Treece has been of great assistance to Coach Sheffer and can certainly be praised for his work in helping to develop the teams of P. H. S. CCACHES FOOTBALL PERSONALS Captain Liebherr: Fullback-- Al was a fighter in all games this year. He was a great de- fensive man, he could always gain a few yards when they were needed badly. Gradua- tion will take Al and his position will be mighty hard to fill. So here's to you, All Dick Wellstead: Halfback- Dick was handicapped this year by illness and injuries but even these could not keep him from playing some great football. He starred especially in the Maumee game. Dick is one of the few who have made four letters in football at P. H. S. He was the sparkplug of the team and will be greatly missed next fall. Bratche Webster: Guard- Brakie was one of our smaller boys this year, registering 6 feet, 2 inches, and with weight in proportion to it. He was shifted around in several posi- tions and proved to be a tough man in all of them. He played a fine game and was ad- mired by all. He too, is a Senior and will be a great loss to P. H. S. football. So long, Brakiel William Schwind: End- Bill played sort of a mediocre brand of ball at the start but about mid-season he opened up. When they circled his end he really tackled with drive so that any ball carrier was glad to evade him. He could also snag passes and make qoOd yardage. He, too, will leave us by graduation. Good luck, Bill! Glenn Reither: Halfback- Glenn was a valuable man in our back field. When Liebherr couldn't punt 60 yards, Glenn could always kick them 59. As a runner he had drive and deception. Too bad that graduation will take Glenn as he would have made a good punt- er next year. Sorry to see you go, Glenn. Iames Stemen: Quarterback- lim was the lightest man on the varsity but an excellent safety man. He was a fighter, a deceptive runner, and a boy that tackled with a fierce drive. lim found it inconvenient to stay with us and we are truly sorry to lose him. Charles Richards: Tackle- Chuck , also, stands tall and wide. He really received the thrill that good football gives and played a whale of a game. He has one more year and should rate as the best lineman P. H. S. has ever had. We wish you lots of luck, Chuck. Earl Schumacher: Tackle- Earlie was our heaviest man this year and he certainly used his weight to good advantage. He is an honor student and a clever man on the gridiron, being the only P. H. S. student to be a member of the National Scholastic Athletic So- ciety. He is only a Sophomore so he will be heard of and admired as a student and foot- ball player in the next two years. We're with you Earl, so show your stuff. Fred Althofi: Tackle- Fred was a new man on the gridiron this season, but he got a lot of experience and should be a good bet for any coach. He has one more year at P. H. S. so let's go, Fred! Iames Cousino: End- Frenchy received much experience this year and should be the outstanding end in the League next season. He can snag passes and take them down the field like nobody's business. He has two more years to play, so We're expecting a lot from you, Frenchy. Edgar Liebherr: Quarterback- Ed was our safety man part of the time and a halfback the rest of the season. He was a good open field runner with enough deception to make anyone watch him. He, too, has two more years to spend with us, so we'll be looking for you, Ed. David Stanford: Center- Dave was a bit light for his position this year but had lots of fight and played a- good game. He has two years yet to show his stuff for P. H. S. Give all you have, Dave. Norbert Himburq: Guard- Hamburg is a stocky boy with a drive to hold back any op- position. He plays a fighting game and gets his share of the tackles. He has two more years to play so we hope to see him fighting for P. H. S. again next year. Dale Thompson: Halfback- Whitey was a Freshman that saw quite a bit of service this year. He lacked experience but was a hard fighter. He is determined to make himself a real back, so watch him! Maurice Walp: Guard- Bud was the only Freshman to make the Varsity this year. He's plenty tough and nothing can hold him from breaking through and stopping plays. We hope to see more great playing from you the next three years, Bud. .t . fy.. 2 BASKETBALL REVIEW FOOTBALL REVIEW + The football season of 1934 can be classed as another building year. We feel that in another year or two P. H. S. should put one of the best teams in the county on the field. Many more Freshmen are participating in the game than in preceding years and if any- thing will bring success to P. H. S. football this interest shown by the underclassmen certainly ought to. Spring practice this year will call about thirty-five lads together. What is in store for us next fall, however, still remains to be seen. The huge problem of theCoach Will be to find some men who can take the place of those who are graduating this May. Among those who will leave will be Wellstead and Lieb- herr of the backfield, Schwind and Webster of the line, and Reither, P. H. S.'s star punter. Although the team of lQ34-l935 played the same teams as those played last year our boys were at a disadvantage because of the size of our men and the loss of some good material from last year. The wholeugarne, nevertheless, does not rest in the score. Good sportsmanship is an important item, and We feel the boys have been good sports. P. H. S. presented some oi the best class A ball at the tournament at Defiance this year, much of the credit belonging to Mr. Sheffer for his fine training of the boys. lt is hard to determine just what next year will bring, considering the loss of Burkhart, Wellstead, and Liebherr, through graduationg but with Schumacher, Haas, Iacobs, and Stanford back, along with some good substitutes we should have a team that will make us all stand up and cheer. BASKETBALL ' PERSONALS Q s Captain Wellstead-Forward Dick was the only member of his class to win four letters in basketball. He was handicapped by size but speed, clev- erness, and lots of fight did much to over- come this handicap. ln the class A tourna- ment at Defiance he was the high point man of either team with ll points to his credit. Sorry to see you go, Dick! Gordon Burkhart-Center Burkie played a smooth game all sea- son. We could always depend on him to sink the short ones as well as to jump center. He is one of our veteran ball play- ers that will leave us this year through graduation. P. H. S. will be at a loss next year when this boy doesn't report. Good luck to you, Burkie! Albert Liebherr-Guard Al was oft form tor awhile this season. He was capable but just couldn't get go- ing. ln the final games of the season, how- ever, he opened up and proved his worth to any basketball club as a guard and an offensive player. P. H. S. is going to miss him next year. Good luck, Al! Ambrose Haas-Forward Ham is one of those graceful boys we all like to see on a basketball floor. He has another year to play and we're expecting a lot from you, Ham. l Frederick Iacobs-Forward Freddie plays an aggressive game and is an asset to a ball club. He has re- ceived enough experience this year tc make him the best forward in the League, so watch him next year. David Stanford-Guard Dave has developed into a good guard and with a little more experience he should be of great value to P. H. S. He has two more years, so let's go, Dave. Earl Schumacher--Center Earlie is fast becoming the main cog in P. H. S. athletics. You have two more years, Earl, and we are depending on you for winning teams. GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP INTRAMURAL TEAM GIRLS' GYM CLASS + Great interest and enthusiasm has been displayed in the Girls' Gym Classes this year and a very active program has been carried out, beginning with hikes, baseball, volley ball, marching, calesthenics, and then, of course, basketball. Since the close of the bas- ketball season the girls have been very active in tumbling, pyramid building, relays, folk dances, novelty dances, and tap dancing, all of which the girls presented to the public in the evening of March 26 in a very clever gym exhibition. An unusual degree of enthusiasm and interest has been displayed in the Girls' Phy- sical Education work this year, and of course especially in basketball. ' A keen rivalry was shown in the Girls' lntramurals in February. The captains of each class team drew for the team to be played. The drawing resulted in the Seniors playing the Freshmen, with a score of 63 to 7 in favor of the Seniors, although the Freshmen showed some excellent playing and teamwork. The Iuniors defeated the Sophomores in a very close, evenly matched contest, the score being 18 to 14. The final game was play- ed between the Seniors and Iuniorson the evening of March 8 before a' large crowd, the Seniors playing a fast, winning game, displaying very clever teamwork and plays. We are losing some fast, clever players this year through graduation, who have proved themselves outstanding in their four years of playing basketball. . , r:::l!-:few ma V,-.ww -1 M s I- vf'v2'lf-m1t'V ' :Ewa W l BOYS' GYM CLASS Perrysburg High enioyed a very successful season of intramural athletics. During the regular league schedule fifty-two games were played, with a total of seventy-two boys taking part. The teams coached by Wellstead and Liebherr finished the season, tied for first place. Wellstead's team, composed of Cupp, Reis, Thomas, H. Lehman, Emch, F. Richards, and S. Huffman, won the play off. Gordon Thomas, of the championship team, was moved to the varsity squad and was one of the ten players to go to the Defiance tournament. Bob Heckler of Burkhart's team, was the leading scorer of the league, scoring a total of 79 points. He was followed closely by Paul Kazmaier of the Iacob Five with a total of 74 points. Liebherr's team scored the highest number of points in a single game defeating Hon- ner 41 to 23. Stanford's team was the strongest defensively, holding Haas' team to one point in one of the best played games during the season.
