As usual, about two weeks were spent before the freshmen learned which were their cor- rect class rooms. We had ithe honor of being the first sophomores in the new building. R U TH CALDWELL, WENDELL RIGGLE Our high school career has ended, and we all look back upon the past years with fond and pleasant memories as we reach the height of our ambition. 1934 27 + BLACK AND GOLD + PROPHECY 1945 was a big year for me. I had been appointed news reel photographer for Fox studios. After my appointment, I picked up my camera and mer- rily tripped along to the great plane awaiting me. I had always trembled at the thought of getting both feet off the ground at the same time but with Melvin McFillen as my pilot, I faced the future unafraid. Pilot McFillen had behind him ten years of brilliant and faithful service in the United States Air Corps. I had no special duties for my first assignment. I was merely to photograph interesting sketches to be called The Human Side of the News. We were fly- ing along at a good rate when I noticed a man on a parachute go drifting by the plane. I wanted to know if I might be of any service so I pulled up along- side the parachute and said, Hello, in a sociable way. To my astonishment, the person was no less than Leonard Roberts. He had been doing fancy jumps for an air circus for years. We stopped at Omaha and I noticed a few small signs which read, Pat- ronize Sweet's Stock Yards. I determined to see if this fellow Sweet, could be my school mate, Flo. I found that it really was Flo. He stood before me in a bloody apron and was talking to Michael Seminew and Forest Kille, who were stock breeders. Having a two-hour stop at Omaha, I went to the circus. The elephants led the procession and on the head of the first animal sat Stanley Gilson, dressed as an Arabian prince. Next c.ame the white horses. It took my brea-th to see Iva Lou Gaskell, dressed in spangles and- ruffles, riding -horseback on a mag- nificent horse. Now came the aerialists and I waited eagerly to see that death- defying triple spin enacted by the famous aerial team, Eckel and Simmons. On leaving the main tent I went into a side show to have a certain Madame Ronanofsky tell my fortune. I suspected the madame of being a fake and found that she was none other than Madelyn Black. I asked her if she could tell me anything about our classmates and she said she had read that Dorothy Cousino had made millions of dollars on a new type of potato peeler, that she had in- vented. Also, she said that Florene Charles excelled in the raising and training of Dachshund dogs. So on to Washington where we stopped to take a few reels of political ac- tivities. A most distinguished looking butler answered my knock at the White House door. I nearly passed him by before I noticed he was Vernon Albright. He was rather hard to recognize under his camouflage of sideburns and whis- kers. I was shown to the president by Harry Albright, his secretary. The presi- dent was in conference with Althea Kruse who was a representative striving to uphold the rights of the Gashouse District from New Work. The president welcomed me and invited me to stop for tea. He promised some delicious sandwiches and little cakes. His pastry experts were Catherine Bazavik and Anna Piscor. Ruth Long and Rebecca Jeffery did nothing but con- coct new recipes containing lobster which was the president's favorite food. While flying about the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor, I saw Robert Leslie sitting in one of Our Lady's hands and diligently scrubbing her wrist. Every year, Bob starts at the top of her head and gives her a bath to the bottom of her feet. 1934 28 + PERRYSBURG I-IIGI-I + I was to stay at the home of Paul Munger while in New York. Paul had taken New York by storm with his pleasing personality and was one of the socially elite. Paul gave a reception in my honor and I met Robert Thomas who had just returned from a trip around the world. Bob was brimming with information, and told me that while he was in the Samoan Islands, he saw a most peculiar spectacle. The native islanders were going through a religious cere- mony, and sitting high on a throne above them was Melvin Brossia. The sim- ple natives had set up Melvin as their king because he had the hair of the Sun God. While in the wilder parts of Australia, Bob saw a tribe of aborigines who had adopted John Dunbar as a foster child. When Bob saw John, John had gone primitive and was wearing a couple of feathers and a string of beads. Bob's last bit of news was that Howard Roper had made quite a name for himself as a whaler in the frozen north. Mr. Munger liked to have gathered in his home a varied group: those in the artist's world, entertainers, scholars. the society lions and the intelligentia. Among those present were James Bayers who was a well known man from South Carolina: Dorothy Buckenberger who had just written a wonderful pamphlet on Social Problems, and Kathryn Cummins who was well known as an artist's model. Caroline Wenz and Hattie Puller, who had recently re- turned from Tibet after unearthing antique fossils there, gave lectures on that subject. George Smithers, a popular radio crooner, sang. He introduced to the party. Ruth Williams, his secretary whose sole duty was to answer George's tremendous fan mail. Margaret Porter and Virginia Witzler sang some very gay and very lovely selections. The last thing on the program was a style show, Ruth Caldwell was the very pretty little lady who acted as a model. I left Munger's mansion for suburban New York. As I needed a haircut, I went to Paul Laubenthal's barber shop. Here I met the former Doris Spilker who had become Doris McGrady. Doris had always wanted to be a policeman but she had to be content to be a policeman's wife. An interesting case was being tried in a nearby court where Edward Lauman was working as a court stenographer. Ed was such an expert that he could write shorthand with one hand and type with the other. I left the court for a district where many institutions and places of interest were located. I came to a Children's Home where Margaret Redman was a good, kind matron. I entered and found John Hayes doing a very fantastic dance. On inquiring into the matter I found that John had traveled all over the world learning folk dances and came back to the United States to teach the dances to the orphans in various homes. This strenuous work had made John old at an early age, and as I watched him dance he frequently tripped over his long white beard. 1934 29 + BLACK AND GOLD + I was informed that Uncle Tom's Cabin was to be enacted for the en- tertainment of the children and that John Perrin was to take the role of the villain. On leaving the Home I encountered William Sass who was a sort of a secretary for Goldstein, Ginsburg and Fishsteinf' manufacturers of glue. With Bill was Ronald Schaller who drove an old cart about collecting the bodies of dead fish and horses which were to go into the making of the glue. After meeting these friends, I wanted a bite to eat and entered a novel confectionery store. Beatrice and Thelma Scheider were the proprietors. They pointed out to me a delightful little millinery store across the way which was owned by Florence Eckel. I heard that Gertrude Laliarree was residing at a convalescent home where she was resting after a strenuous sports career. Inez Stickles was her ever- faithful nurse. Upon inquiring for my old friend, Virginia Kidney, I was told that she had built the largest aquarium in the United States. I went to the place and found poor Ginny in tears. She had spent years trying to get a cross between a shark and swordfish and had failed miserably. Trying to comfort her was Rita Shiple, a worker for the New York Humane Society. The next day I made a shopping tour at Kresge's. Wendell Riggle was an elevator boy and Marilyn Kautz worked at the can opener counter. Marilyn advised me to see the Perrysburg Piccadillies Revue. The chorus girls in the revue were trained to dance by Bob Welsh. I had spent three days in New Yok and I was ready to leave for Holly- wood. On my way to the airport I met .lack Heckler driving a truck of stones. Jack told me he was called the Mathematical Truck Driver ' because he could pile stones so evenly along the side of the road. His piles of stone never varied a fraction of an inch and when I asked why, he explained that he figured his distance by means of all sorts of angles and curves. He soon had me caught in such a web of geometrical expressions that I fled to a nearby house for escape. Here I found Irene Inman as the good housewife. Swinging from her apron strings were many cherubic babies. The plane was overhauled by those master mechanics, Earl Nollenberger and Herald Loomis. On the way home, it occurred to me that I had heard from all my class- mates but one, George Madsen. It was still in this trend of thought when we arrived in Hollywood. To my utter astonishment, among those to welcome me home was George Madsen himself. It had always been a tradition among the studios that the Wampus baby stars were to be beautiful and child-like young girls, but when the movie executives saw George, they changed the tradition and made George a glorified Wampus star. So ended a happy week. I was well satisfied with the destinies found by my classmates, Although not all of them were known the world over, each did his particular brand of work so well that his life was made worthwhile. -Evelyn Hutchison. 1934 30 EAST END PHYSICS LA EW AUD ITORIUM 4 B QRATORY C H EM ISTRY LABORATORY Dom E ST mc sci E NCE 31 + BLACK AND GOLD + JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY In September 1931 we found one hundred and twenty-five Freshmen struggling for their balance in this new and beautiful school. Failures and achievements have been in the same ratio that come to Democratic governments elsewhere, and it may be added that these successes and failures have been due to the causes that are always operating in every democracy. The school citizen should make more use of the school government. He will find that this pays. No question has been submitted to the council within the year that has not received serious consideration. Work in the council has taught one wholesome lesson to its members-that each must put the welfare of all before the demands of any special group. On the whole, the council has been very successful in its work this year. This success was due to the fine cooperation of the members and their capable leader, Mr. Huffman. This distinction is one of theihighest honors a student can receive from the school. Membership confined to students of first grade schools is based upon four qualifications which are: scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Each student aspires to this distinction, thus raising the scholastic standards. Juniors and Seniors are eligible for election to this society by the faculty. Five per cent of the class is elected in the Junior year and ten per cent in the Senior year. The class of 1934 has an enrollment of eight members as follows: Dorothy Buckenberger, Hattie Caroline Fuller, Evelyn Hutchison, Althea Kruse, Melvin McFillen, Wendell Riggle, Doris Spilker, Caroline Wenz. 1934 41 + BLACK AND GOLD + 'GIRL RESERVES The Girl Reserves are the younger members of the Young Women's Christ- ian Association. Our activities, standards, and aims center around these things: personality, fineness of character, 'development of leadership, ability and com- panionship, combined with pleasure and adventure. Junior and Senior girls of good character and scholastic standing are eligible. Many of our goals have been achieved, including charitable Work, which we think have been quite successful. We feel that we owe our success, in a great measure, not only to the co- operation shown by the girls, but also to the untiring energy of our sponsor, Miss Forsyth, Whose time and efforts have made our organization possible. SCHOLARSHIP CONTESTANTS In April each year the teachers through a series of elimination tests select the two best students in each subject. These thirty students make up the State Scholarship Examination, which is held the first Saturday in May. This contest is held at five different centers over the state, the four state colleges and Ohio State University. The Perrysburg team competes in the Exempted Village classification in the Bowling Green division which is made up of twenty-two counties of North- western Ohio. The reports from each division are sent to Columbus and the winners are decided by comparative scores. The Perrysburg team has always ranked high in these contests. Three years ago we placed fifth in our division, two years ago second and last year we took first place. l As this book goes to press the results of this year's contest are not yet known. The team members were: Continued on page 96 1934, 62 KJZN Q1.f5!,,,, N 0 ATHLETICS The mind ought to be diverted, that it may return the better to thinking. + BLACK AND Goto + COACHES COACH BACHMAN-Four years at P. H. S. have given Coach Bachman a rec- ord that is hard to beat. Good sportsman- ship. fair play and work with a will, have distinguished these years. Games have been lost but the teams have also won their share of victories. Bachman does not believe in the motto, Win at any cost, but rather Win if you can, honestly and fairly, but lose rather than win by other means. Always the welfare of his boys is up- permost in his mind. By his honesty and fairness, as well as his coaching ability he has won the respect of his boys and of the entire student body. DOC CANFIELD-Assistant coach and trainer. Doc was right on the job again this year to patch broken noses and other injuries, received by the boys while playing. His ready smile and good humor did much to keep the fellows playing their very best game throughout the year. MR. TREECE, Faculty Manager-As Athletic Manager, Mr. Treece seldom is shown the appreciation we really feel for his tireless work. Incidentally the athletic fellows wish to express their appreciation and gratitude to Mr. Treece for being the true friend and advisor to them. His sense o-f fair play and his excellent ability and tact, make him dear to every team with which he has any associations. 1934 64 + PERRYSBURG HIGH + FGOTBALL PERSONALS HERALD LOOMIS- Herald -Guard. Herald was one of our strongest men at guard this year, and we hate to see him go. Good-luck, Herald. MELVIN BROSSIA-f'Red''-Linemarz. Red was another of the few let- termen back with us and his excellent playing won our respect and admiration. RICHARD WELLSTEAD- Dick''fl-Ialfback. Dick was shifted into the backfield this year where he proved to be a clever broken-field runner. Dick has another year to play and we hope to see him continue his excellent playing. STEVE PROTSIK-''Steven-Halfback. Steve was one of our letter men back with us this year and his scrappy playing showed us his abilities. We are sorry that he found it necessary to withdraw from school. WILLIAM SCHWIND- Bill -End. Bill's excellent playing at end pre- vented the opponent from gaining much ground around that end. He has good chances of becoming one of the mighty if he keeps up the good work. Let's do it, Bill. ALBERT LIEBHERR- Al -Center. A1's work in the line was out- standing and helped the team over some rough bumps this season. He has an- other year to play and we are expecting a great deal from him next year. WILLIAM HONNER- BiII''-Halfback. This was Bill's first year with the team. He didn't play every game, but what we saw of his playing, makes us want to see what he can do in his two remaining years. NORBERT HIMBURG-''Hamburgn-Tackle. Himburg was one of the few freshmen to make the team, but his playing showed us his possibilities of becoming a strong member of the team in his remaining three years. GLEN REITHER- GIen''-Halfback. This was Glen's first year on the team, but he showed ability. With another year's work, we feel he will develop into quite a clever player. STANLEY GILSON- Staff'-Fullback. Stanley really played ball this year, on the offensive as well as the defensive. We hate to lose you Stan. GEORGE SMITHERS-i'George -End. This was George's first year at football, and being a senior we regret to say, his last. He did fine- punting and showed a good fighting spirit. BRATCHE WEBSTER-''Bratcheu-Guard. Bratche has worked hard this year and improved his game greatly. With a year's work next season we expect great things of Bratche. CHARLES RICHARDS-''Chuckn-Tackle. Charles shows great ability for putting up a very scrappy fight as a lineman. I-Ie still has two years, so come on, let's work. 1934 65 + BLACK AND GOLD + FOOTBALL REVIEW ln a school of this size a really strong team cannot be developed every year. lt takes time to build a winning team and when these men are gone, another building period is usually necessary before another strong team can be devel- oped. This year was a building year. With a light and inexperienced squad, Coach Bachman turned his attention to building for next year and the year follow- ing. The results of his work will be seen when the team takes the field next September. Though most of the games were lost this year, the success of a season is not measured entirely by games won. A clean, hard fight is the thing of chief im- portance in any game. Bowling Green Whitehouse ,,,,.. Whirmer .... Sylvania .... Swanton .... Rossford ,,....., Point Place ,,,.... In addition to the league games which are always hard fought, the team played Fostoria, St. John's and Bowling Green, three unusually strong class A teams. Handicapped greatly by lack of size the team overcame this han- dicap by speed and cleverness sufficiently to win more than half of their games and to place second in the Maumee Valley League. Much of the credit for this fine showing belongs to Coach Bachman. Two members of the team, Sweet, guard, and Riggle, forward, graduate this year. Both were outstanding players and their positions will be hard to fill. With Burkhart, Liebherr, Wellstead and Haas back again and several promis- ing substitutes coming on, prospects look fairly bright for another winning team next year. , 1934 67 + BLACK AND GOLD + BASKET-BALL REVIEW HASKINS: This, our first game of the season, started us off with a com- paratively easy victory for us, 23-15. SYLVANIA: Our first league game showed great improvement in the playing of the whole team. Another victory for us, 29-18. ST. JOHN'S: St. John's came with a reputation for being the best in To- ledo, and we just couldn't get started. First loss, 14-26. POINT PLACE: Our second league game proved favorable to us. The boys played a strong defensive game with a score of 24-15. - I WHITMER: This game found our boys a bit out-of-condition, and we lost, 40-22. MAUMEE: This was the fourth league game of our fellows and' it was a bitterly contested struggle, ending with our victory, 16-13. ROSSFORD: I-Xt Rossford we met two serious handicaps. The height of the Rossford team and the small floor. They proved too much for us and we lost this league game, 8-30. EOSTORIA: After leading in the first quarter, we weakened against their superior height and size and lost a hardl game, 23-27. SYLVANIA: Back on our own floor and in good condition we won this league game, 28-18. POINT PLACE: Perrysburg's playing was far below par, but Point Place was even lower. Our victory, 15-13. MAUMEE: lVlaumee's desire for revenge was realized when they defeated us this game by a score of 9-24. ROSSFORD: Failure to hit the basket with precision lost the game to Rossford, 11-20. BOWLING GREEN: A strong defensive on our opponents side and our own failure to make good both foul and floor shots lost the game for us, ll-24. WHITMER: The last game of the season found us in third place in the Maumee Valley League. The hard fought game with Whitmer placed us in a tie for second with a score of 23-26. 1934 68 + PERRYS-BURG HIGH + WENDELL RIGGLE-Forward Wendy played a good snappy game of bas- ketball this year. He was a good shot and a high point man in many games. We hate to say so-long, but we must, so, here's luck. I FLORIS SWEET-Guard Flo was another of our star players this year. We are safe in saying that Flo is one of the best players Perrysbur has ever produced. Keep on Flo. O RICHARD WELLSTEAD-Forward Dick was with us again and playing an excellent game of ball. You have a year yet. Dick, so come on. I.et's go. I GORDON BURKHART-Center Burky played a fighting game all the way this year. You too, have another year, so let's work. I ALBERT LIEBHERR-Guard Al played good steady basketball, through- out the season. His remarkable team work with Sweet and his ability to score almost without fail has won our respect and admiration. We'll see you next year, Al. C AMBROSE HAAS-Forward Ham was the only Sophomore to make the team this year. Judging by this year's work we expect very excellent basketball in your remain- ing years.
