KLAE 5 QLD-- 2033- History of Peerrysburg ln 1816, parts of the United States Reservations, including the present site of the village of Perrysburg on the lower Maumee River, were surveyed for settlers by Alexander Bourne, and Surveyors Joseph Wampler and William Brookfield in accordance with the Act of Congress. The United States was given all unsold lots and out-lots of the town plot of Perrysburg in 1822, on condition that the public buildings of Wood County be located there. For the purpose of attending to the erection and repairs of the public buildings of the County, a special session of the board at Perrysburg was convened in 1823. A Court House for Vv'ood County was built at Perrysburg in 1823. A brick building was built to replace this in 1843. Along with the march of events and the accomplishment of brave deeds in pioneer days, journalism kept pace with the current topics of the day. ln the Maumee Valley, the Battle of Fallen Timbers over-shadows all other historical events, and present-day historians are prone to overlook many deeds that were recorded in the local histories of the Maumee Valley. So rich is it in the point of pathos and humor that a long and continued story would have to be written in order to do it justice. Strange to say, less than a hundred years ago, Perrysburg was a larger and more important city than Toledo, The Perrysburg Journal of 1853 compliments the Baby News- paper, The Toledo Blade. March 10, 1853, Silman Clark published Volume No. 1 of the Perrysburg Journal, in the same building which houses it now. Like an old grist mill it stands against the vicissitudes of time and circumstance, in spite of the years and the steep embankment, where it stands on the brink. Six

Education on the Maumee, dates back before the War of 1812. A private school was maintained by the settlers, first at Miami and later at Fort Meigs. A grade school was organized by J. YV. Ross in 18-16. The first high school was founded in 18-18 by A. D. Wright. The high school building at this time was a brick structure, 60 X 90 feet. Because of the increase of students entering P. H. S. every year, the building was enlarged in 1868. This building was destroyed by fire in 189-1. What is now the grade building was built in 1895 and enlarged in 1917. The present high school building was built in 1931. The high school enrollment has increased very rapidly. In the first year of our school, 18-19, the student enrollment was 50. Today the high school en- rollment is 333 students and the enrollment of the grade school is 575. Perrysburg High School was the first school in this section to become a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and her standards are maintained year after year by a very competent faculty. In 1925 We became a member of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. This year's Senior Class is proud to say that it is the first class to graduate from Perrysburg High School since it has become a class A school. Seven
